Porter Davis Spotted at Orlando International Airport, Fueling UCF Speculation
The former Arkansas head coach was seen arriving in Orlando on Monday morning, adding more intrigue to UCF's coaching search.
By Mason Calloway

Porter Davis was spotted Monday morning at Orlando International Airport, immediately fueling speculation that the former Arkansas head coach could be in town regarding UCF's vacant head coaching position.
Photos of Davis walking through the terminal quickly circulated across social media, with many connecting his arrival to the Knights' ongoing coaching search.
Neither Davis nor UCF has commented publicly, and no interview has been confirmed. However, multiple industry sources told Gridiron Report that Davis has remained in contact with UCF officials throughout the search process and is viewed as one of several serious candidates.
One source familiar with the discussions described conversations between the two sides as "ongoing," while cautioning that no deal has been finalized.
"There are still steps left if this gets done," the source said. "But there's definitely mutual interest."
Another longtime coaching industry source believes the process may be nearing its conclusion.
"I'd be surprised if Porter Davis isn't announced as UCF's next head coach before the day is over," the source said. "Everything I've heard over the last 24 hours points in that direction."
Whether that timeline ultimately proves accurate remains to be seen. Davis has been connected to multiple opportunities throughout this hiring cycle and has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to move deliberately rather than rush into his next position.
Still, his appearance in Orlando is the strongest indication yet that his return to college football could be approaching.
For now, all eyes remain on UCF as one of the offseason's most closely watched coaching searches continues to unfold.

No Decision Yet: Porter Davis Departs Orlando Without UCF Announcement
The former Arkansas head coach has reportedly left Central Florida, but sources say the Knights remain firmly in the mix.
By Mason Calloway
Porter Davis has reportedly departed Orlando without an announcement from either himself or UCF regarding the university's vacant head coaching position.
Davis was photographed arriving at Orlando International Airport Monday morning, setting off widespread speculation that he was preparing to become the Knights' next head coach. As the day progressed, several reports suggested an announcement could come before day's end.
It never did.
Multiple sources familiar with UCF's coaching search told DSN that Davis met with university officials and described the discussions as positive, though no agreement has been reached.
"I wouldn't read too much into him leaving town," one source said. "The interview went well. Both sides have a lot to think about, and there could definitely be movement over the next few days."
Neither Davis nor UCF has publicly acknowledged that a meeting took place.
One longtime coach familiar with Davis' approach cautioned against assuming the absence of an immediate announcement signals that negotiations have stalled.
"Everybody keeps trying to apply normal coaching search logic to Porter," the coach said. "He hasn't conformed to what people thought he should do for the last four years. He isn't chasing jobs, and he isn't making decisions because everyone expects him to. He's going to do what he believes is right for himself and his family, whether that's UCF or something else."
That sentiment has become a recurring theme throughout Davis' return to coaching. Since re-entering the profession with a season as a consultant at Hawaii, followed by two years at Air Force and one with the Los Angeles Chargers, Davis has consistently moved at his own pace, resisting the traditional coaching career ladder in favor of opportunities that fit both his professional goals and his family life.
Each stop has served a different purpose. Hawaii allowed him to rediscover his passion for coaching without the weight of running a program. Air Force gradually increased his responsibilities, first as a defensive quality control coach before becoming one of Troy Calhoun's most trusted voices behind the scenes on a defense that ranked among the nation's elite. Last season with Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers, Davis gained invaluable experience at the professional level, contributing to the NFL's stingiest defense while learning new ideas from one of football's most respected coaching staffs.
Along the way, he has quietly rebuilt not only his résumé but also his perspective. Friends say the coach who once measured success by promotions and job titles now measures it by fit, balance and the people he'll be surrounded by every day.
"Five years ago Porter would've chased the biggest opportunity," one longtime coaching colleague said. "Now he's asking a completely different question. He's asking whether it's the right opportunity. Those aren't always the same thing."
For now, UCF remains one of the programs most closely connected to Davis, but multiple sources continue to emphasize that no final decision has been made.
As one source put it, "This isn't over."
Whether the next development comes tomorrow or several days from now remains uncertain, but Davis' name continues to sit near the center of one of college football's most closely watched coaching searches.

Porter Davis Spotted Near Stanford as Cardinal Search Continues
After leaving Orlando without a deal, the former Arkansas head coach has surfaced on the West Coast, where another high-profile vacancy continues to draw national attention.
By Mason Calloway

Just days after being linked to UCF's head coaching vacancy, Porter Davis has once again become the subject of coaching carousel speculation.
Multiple people familiar with the situation confirmed to DSN that Davis was seen in the Palo Alto area Tuesday evening, fueling immediate speculation that Stanford may have emerged as another serious contender for one of college football's most sought-after coaching candidates.
Neither Stanford nor Davis has acknowledged any meeting, and multiple sources cautioned against assuming the visit was directly related to the Cardinal's coaching search. Even so, Davis' presence in the area comes as Stanford continues evaluating candidates following another disappointing season.
The Cardinal have endured four consecutive 3-9 campaigns, a stunning stretch for a program that spent much of the previous decade competing for conference championships and producing NFL talent under David Shaw.
Several industry sources believe Davis' name has generated significant discussion inside Stanford's search.
"On paper, it makes a lot of sense," one Power Four athletic administrator said. "Stanford isn't looking for someone to win a press conference. They're looking for someone who can rebuild a culture, develop players and establish an identity. That's been Porter Davis everywhere he's gone."
That résumé is difficult to ignore.
Davis inherited a struggling Louisiana program and transformed it into a Group of Five power before leading Arkansas from a 2-10 season to an SEC Championship and Sugar Bowl victory in just one year. After stepping away from coaching because of health concerns, he gradually rebuilt his career through stops at Hawaii, Air Force and most recently with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he played a key role in the NFL's top-ranked scoring defense.
Those who know Davis well also believe Stanford's institutional culture could appeal to him.
Unlike many Power Four jobs where immediate pressure often dictates every decision, Stanford has historically emphasized long-term program building, player development and organizational stability—qualities that align closely with the approach Davis has embraced since returning to coaching.
"Five years ago he probably would've looked at the biggest logo," one longtime coach said. "Now he's looking at the environment. He wants to know who he's working for, who he's working with and whether the job actually fits his life. Stanford checks a lot of those boxes."
That doesn't necessarily mean a hire is imminent.
Sources continue to describe Stanford's search as fluid, with multiple candidates still under consideration. Davis has repeatedly shown throughout this coaching cycle that he is comfortable walking away from opportunities, even those many around the sport consider ideal.
"People keep assuming they've figured him out," another industry source said. "Then Porter does something nobody expected. That's kind of become his trademark."
For now, Stanford joins a growing list of programs connected to Davis during this coaching cycle.
Whether the Cardinal ultimately become his next stop, or simply another program that explored the possibility, remains to be seen.
One thing, however, has become increasingly clear.
Wherever Porter Davis goes next, it will be because he chose the opportunity, not because the opportunity chose him.

Saints, Jaguars Among NFL Teams Showing Interest in Porter Davis
The hottest name on this year's coaching carousel may not be headed back to college after all.
By Mason Calloway
Just as speculation surrounding Porter Davis' future appeared to be centered on college football, the NFL has quietly entered the conversation.
Multiple league sources tell DSN that both the New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars requested permission to speak with Davis regarding their vacant defensive coordinator positions earlier this week. While neither organization has publicly acknowledged the conversations, sources familiar with the process say Davis participated in at least one virtual interview and was expected to hold another before the end of the week.
None of the meetings have resulted in an announcement, and when contacted by DSN, representatives for both organizations declined to comment. Davis, as has become customary throughout this coaching cycle, also declined to address the speculation.
The silence has done little to slow it.
After weeks of being connected to college openings at UCF and Stanford, many around the league now believe Davis could be leaning toward remaining in the NFL rather than returning to the college game.
"I think people are starting to underestimate how much he enjoyed last season," one AFC executive told **DSN**. "The Chargers reminded him why coaching can be fun."
That sentiment has surfaced repeatedly among people close to Davis over the past several months.
While college head coaching jobs offer the opportunity to run an entire program, they also demand year-round recruiting, donor events, NIL management, transfer portal evaluations and countless responsibilities that extend well beyond football. Davis has openly discussed how stepping away from Arkansas because of health concerns forced him to rethink what he wanted his life to look like.
An NFL defensive coordinator role offers a dramatically different equation.
The work remains demanding, but the focus is almost exclusively on football. There are no in-home recruiting visits in December, no booster dinners on weeknights, no transfer portal to monitor around the clock. Several people familiar with Davis' thinking believe that distinction carries significant weight.
"Football has always been the easy part for Porter," one longtime coaching colleague said. "It's everything around football that burned him out. The NFL lets him spend almost every waking hour doing what he loves most—coaching defense."
Sources also point to Davis' growing comfort with the professional game after spending the 2024 season on Jim Harbaugh's staff with the Chargers. Working alongside defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, Davis helped contribute to a unit that finished first in the league in scoring defense while gaining valuable experience in weekly game planning against NFL offenses.
That success has not gone unnoticed.
"Teams are looking at what happened with the Chargers' defense and asking who was involved," one NFC personnel executive said. "Porter Davis' name keeps coming up."
Whether those conversations ultimately lead to a job remains unclear.
As has been the case throughout this offseason, Davis continues to move deliberately while the rest of the football world tries to predict his next step. Sources describe every discussion as exploratory, with no indication that an offer has been made or accepted.
That uncertainty has become one of the defining themes of Davis' coaching comeback.
Each time the industry believes it has figured out his next move, another possibility emerges.
For now, the Saints and Jaguars can be added to an already growing list of organizations that have explored bringing Davis into the fold.
Whether he ultimately returns to college football, remains in the NFL, or once again surprises everyone by choosing a different path entirely, one thing has become increasingly clear:
Porter Davis is no longer chasing the biggest job available.
He's waiting for the right one.
