My thoughts going into the draft was to trade back and secure a 1st for next year. Highsmith is a FA next year, but I signed Thibodeaux to a 3 year deal so in a perfect world he can replace him. Offensive line is still young and under contract. Outside of a DT to back up Harmon, or another CB to learn for a year, WR was the next logical spot. With AR getting a new deal next year, money going to be tight, so having a potential All-Pro WR on a rookie scale contract helps the roster more than a backup DT imo
WE DID IT

saved Tomlin's career
They were actually trying to trade up for Arch as well, but didn't want to part with a 1st next year so Carolina got the pick and the QB. Be interesting to see what happens with Young now

Intriguing opting for Williams over Smith. I saw your reasoning and hope it pans out for you.

Forging Eighth - Pittsburgh Steelers 2027 Season Preview

Pittsburgh, PA. -The Pittsburgh Steelers rode a resurgent MVP season from Anthony Richardson to the organization's seventh Super Bowl title, and if their offseason moves are any indication, they don't plan on changing the formula anytime soon.
"Our entire goal this offseason was to continue to stockpile effective, cost-controlled players to keep this window open as long as we can," GM Omar Khan explained after the preseason. "The timeframe we have with Anthony on a rookie scale contract is coming to an end, so taking advantage of a surplus of cap space this offseason was the priority."
The strategy proved sound. Pittsburgh addressed its few roster holes without mortgaging the future, setting up what could be another dominant run through the AFC North.
The Steelers replaced retired tackle Trent Brown. who was forced to hang up his cleats after suffering a lumbar fracture, by trading for former Texas tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. Many expected Banks and former first-round pick Broderick Jones to battle for the right tackle spot throughout camp.
That competition ended quickly.
After Jones surrendered a pair of sacks in Pittsburgh's opening preseason game against Detroit, the job belonged to Banks, according to sources close to the organization. Jones will serve as the swing tackle, a significant fall from his initial expectations as a first- round selection but a valuable depth role nonetheless. With Banks at right tackle and Troy Fautanu anchoring the left side, Pittsburgh's offensive line should provide Richardson with the protection he needs to build on his MVP campaign.
The starting running back competition followed a similar script. Kaleb Johnson secured the job with steady production throughout camp and the preseason, beating out the explosive but inconsistent Keaton Mitchell for the featured role.
At strong safety, newly signed Ji'Ayir Brown made the decision easy for the coaching staff. Brown was seemingly everywhere on defense during the preseason, tallying 15 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, and a touchdown return. His range and playmaking ability should help Pittsburgh avoid the deep passing breakdowns that occasionally plagued them during last year's championship run.
The biggest surprise of the preseason was the emergence of former Oregon Duck receiver Kyler Kasper, who outshone top-five pick Ryan Williams, albeit with significantly more opportunities as a member of the second team.
"Kyler played a lot more since he was on the second team, but [offensive coordinator] Brian Daboll and Mike Tomlin were very impressed with the athleticism and playmaking ability he showed," one team source said. That impressive play translated into Kasper leapfrogging fourth-year pro Roman Wilson on the depth chart. He's expected to log significant time as both a kick returner and reserve receiver this season, giving Pittsburgh another dynamic weapon in the passing game.
Williams, meanwhile, will need to be patient as he learns the nuances of the NFL game behind established stars DK Metcalf and Zachariah Branch. His time will come, but the Steelers aren't forcing opportunities for the sake of draft capital.
With the preseason festivities over, all attention turns to Week 1 when the Cincinnati Bengals travel to Acrisure Stadium to face the Steelers following the Super Bowl ring ceremony.
"It's going to be a special night, but we're also getting ready for war," Richardson said. "We aren't opening with just anybody. It's a division rival. We can't overlook that, or we're already behind the eight ball."
Richardson's competitive edge remains sharp despite the offseason celebrations. The Bengals present a legitimate threat in the division, and Pittsburgh knows that championship defenses begin with taking care of business at home.
While the offensive changes are minimal ,tackle and halfback being the only new starters, the defense remains similarly intact. Strong safety DeShon Elliott was swapped for Brown, and former Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey was brought in as a nickel corner to add depth behind the dynamic duo of Jalen Ramsey and Joey Porter Jr.
That's it. Those are the only changes to a unit that ranked among the league's best last season, although late season coverage lapses plagued the unit.
"We've got high expectations for the unit this year," defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said. "With the additional range of Brown and the coverage skills of Marlon, we should not have the same deep passing gaffes as last year."
If Pittsburgh can cover at a high level on the back end, that spells trouble for opposing offenses. It also means more opportunities for the Defensive Player of the Year duo of T.J. Watt, who won the award in 2025, and Alex Highsmith, last year's winner. The two combined for 28.5 sacks last season, and with improved coverage behind them, that number could climb even higher.
Last year, the Steelers rode a favorable schedule that featured only four 2025 playoff teams to a No. 1 seed and a 14-3 regular season. This year presents a similar opportunity.
While Pittsburgh faces more playoff opponents than last season, seven to be exact, the Steelers drew a manageable slate of conference opponents, facing the AFC and NFC West divisions. Each division sent only one playoff team to the postseason last year, meaning Pittsburgh avoids the gauntlet that teams facing the AFC East or NFC North must navigate. Add in the fact that Pittsburgh won't face a playoff team from 2026 until a Week Eight tilt against rival Baltimore and Pittsburgh could be 6-0 before their first real test of 2027.
Additionally, of the Steelers' final three games, only the season finale against the Buffalo Bills comes against a playoff team. That gives Pittsburgh a late-season opportunity to stack divisional wins as the playoff picture crystalizes.
"Everything is pointing to Pittsburgh once again running the division," one rival AFC executive said.
The chess pieces are in place for another deep playoff run. Richardson is entering his prime. The offensive line is fortified. The defense remains elite. The schedule is manageable.
But the clock is ticking on this roster construction. Richardson's extension will arrive after this season, fundamentally altering Pittsburgh's financial flexibility. The supporting cast of cost-controlled talent that Khan has carefully assembled will become increasingly difficult to maintain.
This season isn't just about defending a title. It's about maximizing a closing window before the hard salary cap decisions arrive. The Steelers know it. Their opponents know it.
The question is whether Pittsburgh can deliver another championship before the bill comes due.
