Filipowski Joins the Injured List In Win Over Golden State

Salt Lake City, UT. - The Utah Jazz picked up a rare win over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night, helped in part by Steph Curry’s absence, but the victory came with a significant setback to their already-thin frontcourt.
Power forward Kyle Filipowski exited just seven minutes into the game after a hard fall on a rebound attempt. The team later announced that he had suffered a collapsed lung, an injury that will sideline him indefinitely.
“Obviously, his health is first and foremost,” head coach Will Hardy said. “He’s home, he’s stable, and that’s what’s most important.”
The loss compounds Utah’s injury issues, with both Walker Kessler and Isaiah Collier still sidelined, though Collier is reportedly nearing a return. In the meantime, veteran Kevin Love is expected to slide into the starting power forward spot as the Jazz try to navigate yet another stretch of depleted depth.

With Deadline Nearing, Jazz Weighing Options

Salt Lake City, UT. - With the trade deadline just 24 hours away, all eyes in Salt Lake City are locked on Danny and Austin Ainge as the Jazz weigh whether to make a franchise-defining decision on Lauri Markkanen. Utah’s front office has been deliberate throughout the rebuild, but this deadline feels different, the choice on Markkanen could determine the direction of the organization for years.
On paper, moving on from Markkanen is anything but simple. The 28-year-old is averaging 25 points per game, remains a legitimate 7-footer who can stretch the floor, and has proven he can fit within almost any offensive system. But the reality in Utah is blunt: despite his production, the Jazz are 12-39, owners of the NBA’s second-worst record. They've regressed in every season since Markkanen arrived from Cleveland, and after last year’s 17-win campaign, this season is trending even worse. The question is unavoidable; can a rebuilding team justify committing nearly $50 million per year to a high-end scorer who hasn’t translated to wins?
“Utah has at least three legit suitors on the board,” a league source said. “It just depends on what kind of haul they want.”
The Boston Celtics continue to be viewed as the strongest contender. After losing Jayson Tatum to an Achilles tear in the 2024 playoffs and subsequently overhauling much of the roster, Boston has fallen far from the title picture. But with Tatum expected back before the season ends, the Celtics appear motivated to reassemble a contender immediately. “Boston has coveted Lauri for a long time,” a source close to the team noted. “A core of Derrick White, Jaylen Brown, Tatum, and Markkanen is as dangerous as anything in the league.” Still, dealing with Ainge is a historically painful experience for Boston, and the price will reflect that.
The Celtics’ 2025 first-round pick, currently projected in the Top 5, would be the starting point of any deal. But that pick could slide quickly if Boston spikes in the standings after adding Markkanen, making additional compensation essential. League executives believe a realistic framework would include multiple first-rounders, plus Payton Pritchard and Anfernee Simons (for salary purposes). Utah has also explored the idea of bringing in a third team to flip Simons for additional draft capital.
The Detroit Pistons have been another persistent caller. Detroit wants a proven scorer to accelerate their rise in a wide-open Eastern Conference, and they’ve checked in on Markkanen several times. But so far, the Pistons’ package, centered around Ron Holland, Jaden Ivey, and picks hasn’t met Utah’s threshold.
Quietly, the San Antonio Spurs have emerged as a legitimate dark horse. With sizable expiring deals in Kelly Olynyk and Harrison Barnes, San Antonio has the salary structure to get a deal done now, before future extensions and an eventual record-breaking Victor Wembanyama contract eliminate their flexibility. “If they’re ever going to swing big, this is the window,” one executive said. A potential lineup of De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Markkanen, and Wembanyama, with Stephon Castle and Jeremy Sochan off the bench, would instantly put San Antonio in the Western Conference’s top tier.
But that scenario hinges on the Spurs’ willingness to part with the Jazz’s dream target: Dylan Harper, the No. 2 pick in the 2024 draft. Utah aggressively tried to trade up for Harper last year but never put Markkanen on the table. Now, with Ace Bailey emerging as a franchise cornerstone, pairing him with his former college running mate could accelerate the rebuild from slow build to near-instant reboot.
A Harper acquisition would also force Utah to reevaluate its own backcourt. With Keyonte George thriving in the starting role while Isaiah Collier has been injured, Collier would likely become the odd man out if a young guard arrives in a Markkanen trade.
The clock is ticking. Utah can reshape its future overnight — or hold onto its star and risk another lost season without the asset boost they’ve been waiting for.
