New Orleans, LA. - After grinding out a 31-27 win over Cincinnati that saw their top-ranked passing attack limited to just 96 yards, the Pittsburgh Steelers wasted no time reminding everyone of their firepower in New Orleans. Anthony Richardson threw for over 100 yards in the first quarter alone as the Steelers exploded to a 31-7 halftime lead and never looked back in a 40-14 rout of the Saints.
New Orleans briefly showed life with an opening-drive touchdown engineered by rookie quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, but from there, it was all Pittsburgh. The Steelers rattled off 24 unanswered points in the second quarter, highlighted by an Alex Highsmith strip-sack that set up Richardson’s third touchdown of the period.
Richardson finished with 274 passing yards and four touchdowns while adding 66 yards and a rushing score. Jaylen Warren posted his second straight 100-yard game, and Pittsburgh’s defense smothered the Saints, holding them to under 200 total yards.
Now 11-1, the Steelers head into their bye week riding high before entering the home stretch with a divisional showdown against the Baltimore Ravens.

BTA. Taking care of the ball and not turning it over is so so key to the foundation of a victory.

Franchise Savior, Or Simply Place Holder? How Does AR15's Season Change Steelers 2027 Draft Plans

Pittsburgh, PA. - As the Pittsburgh Steelers head into their bye week at 11–1, they’ve established themselves as the clear frontrunners in the AFC; thanks in large part to the stunning resurgence of Anthony Richardson Sr. Once labeled a bust, Richardson has played his way into the MVP conversation midway through his first season in the Steel City.
The best part for Pittsburgh? They’re getting elite quarterback play at a discount. Richardson is still on his rookie contract, giving the Steelers top-tier production at a bargain rate. He has one more year left on that deal, a fifth-year option that Pittsburgh will almost certainly exercise. But if his current trajectory holds, Richardson is headed for a massive payday once he hits the open market, whether that comes from the Steelers or someone else.
Rookie-scale quarterback contracts are the biggest cheat code in modern roster building, offering flexibility the cap can’t replicate. So the question lingers:
Does Pittsburgh double down on Richardson and pay him like a franchise cornerstone?
On paper, the answer seems obvious. When you have an MVP-caliber quarterback in his prime, you lock him up. But Pittsburgh’s situation is more complicated than that.
As part of the flurry of trades during the 2026 NFL Draft, which included sending three third-round picks to acquire Richardson, the Steelers also landed the Los Angeles Rams’ 2027 first-round pick. That pick is quickly rising in value — the Rams are 2–9, losers of seven straight, and spiraling after Matthew Stafford’s retirement.
“It’s a good problem to have, but also one they have to get right. Point blank,” said one rival AFC GM. “If Omar Khan makes the wrong move, it could cost him his job, even in Pittsburgh.”
The most straightforward path is extending Richardson with a market-setting contract, then using that likely top-five Rams pick to strengthen the roster; perhaps by adding another blue-chip offensive weapon like Ryan Williams or Jeremiah Smith, or a defensive line anchor to replace Cameron Heyward’s presence up front.
Alternatively, the Steelers could leverage that pick into a king’s ransom from a quarterback-needy team, setting themselves up with long-term draft capital to sustain a contender around Richardson.
But there’s also the bold, analytical route — the one that’s quietly reshaped how some front offices think. Under that model, the Steelers could draft their quarterback of the future (Arch Manning, LaNorris Sellers, or DJ Lagway among the early names), let him learn behind Richardson for a season, then tag and trade Richardson in 2028, effectively restarting the rookie-deal window while replenishing cap space.
It’s the kind of decision that defines a franchise. If Pittsburgh commits to Richardson and he regresses or suffers injury, and one of those 2027 quarterbacks becomes a generational talent, the Steelers could find themselves trapped in mediocrity. But if they move on too soon and Richardson keeps ascending elsewhere, it could haunt them even longer; just ask the teams that gave up on MVP-caliber talent too early.
When asked about the potential offseason dilemma, Mike Tomlin brushed it aside in classic form:
“We do not care,” Tomlin said. “We’re focused on preparing for Baltimore next week.”
