A Cold Day in Hell - Episode 20
The coffee had long since gone cold, its bitter dregs mocking Vic's indecision. Another plane ticket to Los Angeles sat half-purchased on his laptop screen, the cursor blinking like a judgment. Keshawn's Portland home stretched around him, pristine and quiet, a far cry from how he felt inside.

Was it worth it? All the traveling back and forth, juggling the chaos that was Jessica, the baby, and the uncertainty of their relationship? Every time he entered her apartment, it felt like stepping into a different world, one where he was merely a visitor. The distance between them had grown tangible, hanging in the air like an uninvited guest.

Portland didn’t feel like home either. He didn’t mind taking a backseat to Keshawn, he practically placed himself there the second Keshawn had moved in with them back when they were in high school, taking him under his wings but propelling Keshawn forward. Keshawn’s wins felt like their wins, his breakout performance in the Rising Stars Game felt like a shared experience. A testament that their hard work during those early morning hours in the church’s indoor gym and spending those summer days at the park, getting that work in, had paid off.

But Keshawn had made it, fully capable of flying under his own power. He had now had professionals around him: NBA teammates that could give him advice about a life that Vic never lived. World class trainers that could continue to elevate his talent and skill.

Vic just sat there in his thoughts, both laptop and coffee in front of him. He wasn’t sure what a life back in Los Angeles would look like. Back to logging shifts at J.C. Penney? Going back to community college? Coaching? Would his ego allow him to remain on Keshawn’s payroll? Would he have to figure it out on his own? Would even being back in Los Angeles close the gap between him and Jessica?

None of it seemed like the right answer and maybe there wasn’t one. Maybe he’d just have to pick one and live with it.

Leon leaned back in his chair, folding his arms over his chest. “You know, kid, this life ain’t what it’s cracked up to be. This only goes one way, you know that, right?"

Stefan’s jaw tightened. “I’m not paying you for advice now, am I?"

Leon shook his head as he slid across the piece of paper, a full workup on Darnell Tucker. Stefan read through the document, a bit more thorough than he expected or needed. His eyes eventually landed on 'Last Known Residences' with a series of addresses that seemed familiar.

It was Stefan’s turn as he took out an envelope and placed it on the table, not doing Leon the courtesy of sliding it across the table. Leon didn’t mind, reaching across and grabbing it as he counted the cash.

Stefan pushed back his chair, grabbing the piece of paper with him. Leon stared at him as he walked out of the office, foregoing pleasantries and goodbyes, a mix of concern and resignation flickering across his face.

"They never learn," he muttered under his breath before returning to counting the money.

Trey sat on his bunk, idly flipping through a magazine he’d already read. The cellblock had settled into its usual afternoon rhythm—some inmates playing cards, others napping, a few working out in the corner.

The sharp buzz of the electronic door made everyone look up. A correctional officer appeared, standing beside a slim young man in the standard orange jumpsuit. The newcomer's eyes darted nervously around the block, taking in the sea of faces staring back at him.

"We got one!" someone called out, and a ripple of laughter spread through the block.

Trey’s cellmate, Cedric, slid off his bunk and crossed over to Trey, his voice low. "I think that’s the dude from Insane that was supposed to transfer last week."

Trey tossed aside his magazine, sizing up the newcomer. He couldn't be more than twenty, patchy beard and anxious eyes that scanned the room.

The CO left, the door buzzing shut behind him with a finality that seemed to echo through the block. Several Bloods were already approaching, waiting for the inevitable.

"Look, look," the kid said, holding up his hands. "I ain’t trying to bang in y’all module or nothing, homie. I’m just trying to do my time like y’all."

"That ain't how this works," one of the older Bloods said, stepping closer. "You know the rules, homie. We gonna run this fade and then your homies can pull you out but you got to run the fade!"

Trey watched from his bunk, letting the scene unfold. Every new inmate faced the same choice—fight or roll up and face a DP — disciplinary action — from his own set.

"Nah, for real," his voice pitched higher. "We not even enemies for real! Y’all East Side, right? Stack and Insane good, bro! We making money on these streets! No point still fighting each other in here. Shit, let’s get to the bag in here too, you feel me?"

"I don’t feel shit you saying, homie!" Trey was off his bunk in an instant.

"I'm just saying," he backpedaled. "I’m OG Tiny’s little homie. Him and Stacks cool."

"Oh, you and Stacks cool?" Trey asked, a hint of annoyance in his voice as he approached him.

"I ain’t saying that but—"

Trey didn't let him finish. His fist connected with the kid's jaw, causing him to stumble backwards.

"Take his ass to the back!" Trey commanded as two Bloods grabbed the kid, "On Blood, this nigga leaving this motherfucker on a stretcher!"
