COLLEGE FOOTBALL WRAP-UP
Hugh Freeze Heads to Baton Rouge as LSU Overhauls Staff in Major Offseason Shakeup
Image

LSU made one of the biggest splashes of the offseason Friday, announcing the hiring of former Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze as the next leader of the Tigers football program. The move comes as part of a dramatic national carousel that saw multiple Power Five programs make coaching changes, including Nebraska, Kansas, Georgia Tech, and Texas A&M.

Freeze takes over an LSU team looking to reclaim its spot among the SEC elite after the "retirement" of longtime head coach Brian Kelly. In his second stint in the SEC, Freeze inherits a roster stacked with talent but inconsistent results, as LSU finished the year 7–6, including a 3-5 SEC record, and fell short of playoff contention.

“This is one of the premier jobs in college football,” Freeze said in his introductory press conference. “The expectations here are high and that’s exactly how it should be. I can’t wait to get to work and build something special in Baton Rouge.”

The hire represents a full-circle moment for Freeze, who revitalized Liberty and most recently led Auburn back to national relevance, falling just shy of a national championship a few weeks ago against Georgia. Known for his offensive ingenuity and recruiting prowess, he’s expected to restore LSU’s trademark explosiveness and compete immediately in the SEC West.

LSU’s move is just one headline in a whirlwind coaching cycle. Here are some of the most significant shifts across the country:

Kalen DeBoer was fired by Alabama after a rare down year, and Nebraska wasted no time bringing him in to lead their rebuild, a bold hire that sent shockwaves through both the SEC and Big Ten.

Lance Leipold left Kansas to accept the Iowa head coaching job, bringing his disciplined, developmental approach to the Hawkeyes after turning the Jayhawks into a Big 12 contender.

Lane Kiffin was dismissed at Ole Miss but quickly resurfaced in Tuscaloosa, where he’ll attempt to reignite the Crimson Tide offense as Alabama’s new head coach.

Lance Taylor, after years of steady progress at Western Michigan, was hired by Georgia Tech, where his spread offense could energize a program looking to modernize.

Mike Norvell landed at Kansas State after his tenure at Florida State, while Matt Rhule was fired from Nebraska but quickly picked up by Texas A&M, giving the Aggies a hard-nosed, defensive-minded leader.

Meanwhile, DJ Porter, the former Delaware offensive coordinator who guided the Blue Hens’ high-powered offense through their FBS transition, was tabbed as the new head coach at South Florida, continuing the growing trend of Group of Five programs betting on young, offensive innovators.

With Freeze’s move to LSU, DeBoer in Lincoln, Leipold in Iowa City, and Kiffin taking over Alabama, college football’s coaching map looks drastically different heading into the 2027 season.

It’s a landscape defined by bold hires, quick triggers, and a premium on offensive creativity. For LSU, the expectation is clear: compete for championships immediately.

And for Freeze, never one to shy away from a challenge, it’s exactly the kind of stage he’s been working toward.

“You come to LSU to win titles,” Freeze said. “That’s the goal. That’s the standard. And I’m ready to embrace it.”

PORTER ADDS FORMER FLORIDA STATE DC TONY WHITE TO USF STAFF
WHITE BROUGHT IN TO BRING BALANCE
Image

South Florida head coach DJ Porter wasted no time in starting to fill out his inaugural staff, announcing the hiring of veteran defensive coordinator Tony White on Friday. White, who most recently held the same position at Florida State, joins Porter’s new-look Bulls with nearly two decades of collegiate coaching experience and a reputation for defensive innovation.

White, 46, is a Key West native and former UCLA linebacker whose coaching journey has taken him from the Pac-12 to the ACC, including stints at Syracuse, Nebraska, Arizona State, and San Diego State under longtime mentor Rocky Long. His trademark 3–3–5 defense has become a staple across multiple programs, emphasizing speed, disguise, and disciplined pursuit.

At Florida State in 2026, White’s defense showed flashes of excellence despite the Seminoles’ 4–8 record. FSU ranked among the ACC leaders in sacks (25) and interceptions (12), while limiting opponents to a modest 144.4 rushing yards per game, a testament to White’s aggressive front alignment and ability to develop talent in the trenches.

“Tony’s one of the best defensive minds in college football,” Porter said in a statement. “He’s battle-tested, he understands how to build relationships with players, and most importantly, he knows the state of Florida. His experience recruiting here and his ability to connect with kids in this region made him the perfect fit for what we’re building.”

White’s return to his home state marks a full-circle moment in a career defined by adaptability and player development. From his days coordinating elite secondaries at San Diego State and Arizona State to leading full defensive units at Syracuse and Florida State, he’s built a track record of toughness and accountability, values that align squarely with Porter’s philosophy.

“I’m grateful to Coach Porter for this opportunity,” White said. “I was considering taking some time away for a minute. Florida’s home for me. I’ve seen firsthand the talent that comes out of this state, and I’m excited to help USF reach its potential on defense. We’re going to play fast, disciplined, and fearless.”

White becomes one of Porter’s first major hires since taking over in Tampa following Alex Golesh’s departure to Purdue. The move signals USF’s intent to strengthen its defensive identity as it transitions into a new era under Porter’s leadership.

“You win championships with balance,” Porter said. “Our offense will always attack, but defense wins in November. That’s what Tony brings to the table.”

With Porter’s offensive acumen and White’s defensive pedigree, South Florida’s coaching staff suddenly looks like one built not just to compete in the American Athletic Conference, but to contend for a playoff spot.

OPEN THE GATES
PORTER AND CO. WILL NEED TO RESTOCK THE SHELVES AS SEVERAL PLAYERS DEPART USF
Image

As the DJ Porter era officially begins at South Florida, the new head coach faces an early test in roster management. Following the close of the 2026 season, 22 players have left the program, including seven graduates and 15 players who entered the transfer portal, a wave that has reshaped multiple position groups, most notably at quarterback and cornerback.

Among the seniors moving on, wide receiver Jordan Dwyer capped his career with an All-AAC caliber season (95 receptions, 1,239 yards, 15 touchdowns), while linebacker Chavez Brown anchored the defense with 111 tackles and three interceptions. On the offensive line, James Jenkins, Cole Skinner, and Peyton Ellis leave behind valuable experience and depth, while veteran receiver JeyQuan Smith and tight end John Kirkpatrick also depart.

The larger story, however, lies within the transfer portal.

In one of the most dramatic positional shakeups in recent memory, three freshman scholarship quarterbacks (George Burr, Chuck Cobb, and Dashawn Maybin) have entered the portal, each citing playing time as a primary factor.

Despite the departures the Bulls still have four quarterbacks on the roster, all freshman in 2026, including starter Locklan Hewlett (3,482 Yds 30 TD 3 Int), and Joshua Brantley.

Porter, who plans to call plays as head coach, acknowledged the mass exodus but appeared unfazed.

“We had brief conversations with each of those guys about what their roles could look like in our system,” Porter said. “But at the end of the day, I’m not in the business of convincing anyone to stay. We want players who believe in what we’re building here and want to be a part of it.”

The secondary took a similar hit, as four cornerbacks (Chasen Johnson, Ben Hanks Jr., Jamroc Grimsley, and Quincy Ngakoue) all entered the transfer portal. Each cited playing style or scheme fit as reasons for moving on.

Johnson (50 tackles, 2 INT) and Hanks Jr. (73 tackles, 1 INT) were key contributors last fall and leave a sizable hole for new defensive coordinator Tony White to address.

“Change always brings movement,” Porter said. “Tony runs an aggressive defense that demands communication, speed, and trust. We’ll find guys who fit that standard.”

Offensively, receiver Joshua Porter (50 catches, 785 yards, 5 TDs) was one of the team’s most dynamic playmakers and is expected to draw Power Five interest.

On defense, linebacker Devon Byrd (35 tackles, 1 INT) and freshman edge rusher Ryan Jenkins (25 tackles, 3 TFL) headline a group of young defenders seeking new opportunities elsewhere.

Despite the losses, Porter and his new staff remain confident in their plan to restock the roster quickly. With a mix of high school recruiting, transfer portal additions, and junior college prospects, the Bulls are expected to be active over the coming weeks.

“We’re going to hit the recruiting trail hard,” Porter emphasized. “We’ll fill this roster with players who want to be here, players who share our vision for what South Florida football can become. The guys that stay and the ones that join us will form the foundation for something special.”

While the offseason departures leave noticeable gaps, they also clear the way for Porter’s vision to take root, one built on commitment, competition, and belief. The next few months will determine just how quickly that foundation can solidify in Tampa.

Congrats on the new job. USF should be fun. Lots of options to move them to other conferences if you want to stay there for the long term and recruiting in Florida has to be easier then Delaware.

Always interesting to see who Alabama hires after they fire DeBoer. Even funnier that Kiffin couldn't hack it at Ole Miss but lands Alabama which you would think would be considered a more elite job. My current Dynasty had Alabama hire Dabo Swinney which makes sense being it's his Alma Mater but he is 51-28 and has never made it past Round 2. DeBoer is out Tulane which is happens to be in the SEC in my Dynasty but he is struggling and his a 16-22 record

BULLS RECRUITING UPDATE
PORTER AND CO SCRAMBLE TO IMPROVE LIGHT CLASS
Image

DJ Porter and his staff will have their work cut out for them on the recruiting front after the former staff left them with just nine committed players, all of whom intend to honor their commitment despite the staff change.

USF's class is currently ranked 70th in the nation with four three-star players and five two-stars. The incoming class's current score is a 98.60, good for fifth in the American Conference.

“We're certainly happy with some of the guys that the previous regime has brought in and we have been able to retain all of those guys.” Porter said. “But now we know we have our work cut out for us in order to fill out the class with players that fit what we're trying to do so we can hit the ground running in 2027.”

USF's current top ranked commitment is safety Nick Jones. A three-star ranked as the nation's 488th best player.

BULLS RECRUITING UPDATE
PORTER FLIPS THE SCRIPT: USF’S NEW STAFF BUILDS IMPRESSIVE 21-MAN CLASS
Image

When DJ Porter arrived at South Florida, he inherited a recruiting class on life support, nine players committed, only four rated three stars, and little buzz heading into signing day.

Two months later, the new Bulls head coach and his rapidly assembled staff have turned that group into one of the most balanced and energetic hauls in the American Conference, garnering a 60th overall ranking and good for third best in the conference.

Porter and company closed with 21 total signees, including 15 three-star prospects and several immediate contributors from the transfer portal. The overhaul reflects not only USF’s renewed recruiting energy but also Porter’s emphasis on player fit and regional connection.

“We wanted to build a foundation that reflects who we are, tough, fast, and connected to this region,” Porter said. “We didn’t chase stars. We found football players who believe in what we’re building here.”

Porter made early splashes in the portal, landing quarterback TJ Stanley, who threw for 3,436 yards and 27 touchdowns at Georgia State last season, bringing competition to a position that returns a good starter in Locklan Hewlett.

“No position is a lock.” Porter said when asked about the addition of Stanley. “If guys are uncomfortable with competition then we welcome them to look for a new home. Iron sharpens iron.”

The portal additions continued with wide receiver Jordyn Bridgewater, who caught 99 passes for 1,286 yards and 8 touchdowns the past two seasons at UCF, and linebacker Eric Rance from Penn State, both expected to make an instant impact.

Dorian McSurdy, a big legged punter transfer from Florida State, rounds out the group of early college veterans, bringing experience and athleticism to special teams.

True to his word about recruiting in-state, 13 of the 21 signees hail from Florida, giving the roster a strong local foundation. The trenches saw major reinforcement with centers Darren Sumner and Oliver Ellefson, guards Chester Knapp and Matt Toure, and tackles Josh Yachty and Carl Penny, forming what Porter called “the heart of this class.”

The defensive front also got stronger with Greg Demorat, Connor Nicks, and David Nwaneri, while JUCO left tackle Cliff Jean-Pierre from Blinn College brings polish and experience.

In the backfield, the Bulls added Richard Boireau and George Foucha, both local standouts with speed and balance. Jalen Stevens, a dynamic athlete from Winter Garden who can play running back or defensive back, highlights the staff’s focus on versatility.

At receiver, Gerald Camarda and Bridgewater add explosiveness to a rebuilt passing attack, while freshman quarterback Branden Duff provides a developmental prospect behind Stanley.

On defense, Nick Jones, a rangy safety from Atlanta, and Matt Ansah, a quick-footed corner from Lakeland, headline the secondary additions. Both fit Tony White’s aggressive 3-3-5 system that prioritizes physicality and flexibility.

“We targeted guys who can cover ground and make plays in space,” said defensive coordinator Tony White. “This group gives us that range and edge we want.”

In total, Porter’s first recruiting effort transformed a shaky foundation into a deep, multi-layered roster. For a program dealing with heavy roster turnover, the turnaround is both rapid and symbolic — proof that South Florida is quickly adopting its new coach’s mindset.

“This class represents our identity,” Porter said. “They want to be here. They want to compete. And they want to help us bring USF football back to where it belongs.”

Like I said I had a few other job opportunities but this one seemed like the most realistic one

White was a good choice for us since he knows Florida. Also intriguing to run the 3-3-5 Tite, never have before. Could be a tough first year in it though, since our defensive roster is pretty thin.
