“I don’t know,” Connie sighed. “It just felt real this time, you know? Like some serious, heavy shit.”
“You weren’t fucking drunk out your mind this time, bitch,” Skylar cackled without looking up from Connie’s notebook as she copied her notes.
“I’m serious,” Connie shook her head, eyes drifting toward the ceiling of Skylar’s room. “It’s like… real now.”
“I mean, what did you think was going to happen?” Skylar asked, finally glancing up at her friend. The two-hour ordeal still lingered on her face. “This isn’t like reporting some kids to the principal, Con.”
“I didn’t really have a choice,” Connie said softly. “What was I supposed to do? My parents weren’t going to let it go.”
“I guess,” Skylar murmured, closing her binder. “You’ve talked to Brice about it yet?”
Connie hesitated, not to answer but to think — to picture how Brice would react, what this would mean for them. “No. He still thinks I’m grounded and don’t have my phone.”
“He’s going to find out,” Skylar warned. “You might as well tell him.”
“I don’t know.” Connie bit her lip. “People take back their statements all the time, right? I was drunk the first night, and this time my parents were in the room with me. I could just say I was saying what they told me to say.”
“You could,” Skylar said, laying back on her bed. She looked at her phone, then back at Connie. “But do you really want to be that girl?”
“What girl?”
“The girl who said a boy did something to her, then said he didn’t, then said he did,” Skylar replied coolly. “Once you do that, no one believes you again. That’s not a reputation you want to carry into college. Everyone’s going to remember that. And he’s going to find out you talked to the police anyway — even if you say you were lying. And that’s if they believe you. They could always file charges using your first statements.”
The trip to Skylar’s house — meant to be a distraction — had become anything but. Connie’s mind was spinning. It was hard enough to imagine life without Brice, but Skylar was right: even if she moved on, people would always remember her as that girl.
Skylar watched her quietly, then added, “Especially if he’s found not guilty. Can you imagine?”
She could.
“This whole shit is so stupid,” Connie said, cracking under the weight. “I wish I just didn’t fucking say anything.”
“Don’t worry, girl.” Skylar sat up, her voice smooth, reassuring. “I’m sure it’ll all work out.”
“I mean… will it?”
“Look,” Skylar sighed. “I can say I saw him rough you up — handle you a little aggressive that night before y’all went into the bathroom. I can get the others who were there to say the same.”
Connie froze. Another thing she hadn’t considered — that other people could be dragged into this. Friends turning into witnesses. Moments turning into evidence.
“Fuck,” she muttered, collapsing her face into her hands.
Skylar reached for her phone, hiding a small, knowing smile. “It’ll be okay, Con. Trust me.”
...
“Is this match?”
“What?” Brice looked up from his phone toward the television, the only light in the room. Jimmy had paused the tape at the top of Brice’s dropback, defenders settling into their zones.
“Play it again.”
Jimmy rewound the clip as Brice leaned forward, studying the defensive backs’ movements. “It’s shitty match coverage if it is. That outside corner’s supposed to be in MEG and follow Ronnie on that crossing route.”
“Coach Butler said they normally check into Match or Palms out of Trips,” Jimmy said, glancing at his notebook from that morning’s film review.
“Why are you even watching last year’s film?” Brice tossed his phone aside. “They’re not gonna play you like this.”
“Coach Butler gave me three games — last year’s matchup, then their games against Riley and Adams from the last two weeks,” Jimmy explained, scrolling on his laptop.
“They already played Elkhart?” Brice asked, leaning over for a better look.
“Yeah,” Jimmy said after a moment. “They did.”
“Pull that one up,” Brice said, putting his phone on Do Not Disturb. “We’re not throwing fifty times against Penn like last year. That film’s useless. They’ll play you like they did Elkhart.”
“They run the Wing, though,” Jimmy pointed out.
“Same principles,” Brice replied without hesitation. “They’ll treat Curtis like Elkhart’s single wideout — bracket him — then bring the safety down to cover the slot. We’re gonna be in 12 personnel the whole game anyway. Might as well be the Wing.”
“Got you,” Jimmy nodded, pressing play again.
