The somewhat blank slate for Delaware is appealing for sure. I think I did a RTG at Temple way back.YaBoyRobRoy wrote: ↑29 Jun 2025, 12:57Can’t go wrong with either selection. Delaware would be the tougher rebuild for sure

Delaware Tabs DJ Porter as New Offensive Coordinator, Signaling a Bold New Era for Blue Hens Football
December 6, 2024 07:17 PM EST
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEWARK, Del. — The University of Delaware has announced the hiring of DJ Porter as its new offensive coordinator, bringing home a coach with deep Blue Hens ties and a track record of explosive offenses at Sam Houston State.
Porter, 39, is no stranger to Newark. He began his college playing career at Delaware, appearing in six games as a quarterback and tight end from 2003-2005 before transferring to Maine. His coaching journey has taken him from graduate assistant roles at Delaware to assistant positions at Maine and a transformative tenure at Sam Houston, where he helped build one of the most prolific offenses in FCS history.
“We are thrilled to welcome DJ Porter back to Delaware,” said head coach Ryan Carty, himself a former Blue Hens offensive coordinator. “He’s one of the brightest offensive minds in the country, and his experience both as a player and a coach will be invaluable to our program.”
Carty and Porter’s connection runs deep. The duo were both QBs at Delaware in the early 2000s. From 2018-2021 Porter worked directly under Carty at Sam Houston.
“There’s a lot of overlap in our philosophies but we also contrast in some areas. We’ve worked together very well over the years so I think we’re both excited to start this next chapter together.” Porter said during his introductory press conference.
Porter’s résumé includes an impressive run at Sam Houston, where he rose through the ranks from offensive assistant to quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. During his time in Huntsville, the Bearkats won the 2020-21 FCS National Championship and transitioned successfully to the FBS level in Conference USA. His offenses were known for balance, creativity, and adaptability — exemplified by leading Sam Houston to a 10-3 record and a New Orleans Bowl win in 2024.
Porter’s coaching career started under legendary head coach K.C. Keeler — his former coach at Delaware — and continued at Maine under Jack Cosgrove. At Sam Houston, he played a key role in developing quarterbacks Jared Johnson, Jeremiah Briscoe, and Eric Schmid, who combined for eye-popping passing numbers and multiple deep playoff runs. Briscoe threw for 4,602 yards and 57 touchdowns in 2016 alone, a testament to Porter’s ability to maximize talent.
“Coming back to Delaware is a dream come true,” Porter said at his introductory press conference. “This place shaped me as a player and a person, and I’m excited to bring everything I’ve learned back to help the Blue Hens compete at the highest level.”
Porter’s path hasn’t always been smooth. After being passed over for Sam Houston’s offensive coordinator job in 2021, he stepped into the role mid-season and helped right the ship with big wins at Utah Tech and Tarleton State. His perseverance impressed many around the program, and he was instrumental in the Bearkats’ offensive resurgence during their move to FBS.
Porter inherits a Delaware offense looking to regain its form after recent inconsistencies. With his innovative play designs, proven quarterback development, and recruiting chops honed across the CAA, Southland, WAC, and Conference USA, the Blue Hens are banking on Porter to help return them to FCS championship contention.
“DJ brings not just knowledge, but energy and a true passion for Delaware Football,” said athletic director Chrissi Rawak. “His journey from Blue Hen walk-on to national champion coach is the kind of story we want to build our program around.”
