Teddy Bridgewater seals second half comeback with Saints resting starters ahead of postseason battle

CAROLINA, JANUARY 3 -- New Orleans looked as if they were going to blow the Carolina Panthers out. By the end of the first half, Alvin Kamara had two touchdowns, Drew Brees had yet to throw and incompletion and Teddy Bridgewater had just 40 passing yards. The Saints chose to sit Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas and the collapse was on, despite the majority of their first team starters playing on defense. It’s the second time this season the Saints have lost back-to-back games. New Orleans will finish the season 10-6, having started the season 9-2.

New Orleans is locked into the sixth seed after Arizona won their game. With Seattle the winner of the NFC West and holders of the third seed, the Saints will travel to the State of Washington to face a strong Seattle Seahawks team in what will an incredibly strong heavyweight bout for a wildcard round. New Orleans will look to shrug off their late season collapse, where they lost their last 3 of 4 games.

2020 NFL Season draws to a close as Green Bay finishes with the best record of 14-2, while Steelers, Saints and Chiefs suffer late season collapses

Three of the four favourites to win the Super Bowl this season suffered late season collapses. All go into the postseason banged up and without momentum. Browns shock Steelers to end season with a victory, drop Steelers to 13-3 and lock up 7th seed in the NFC
Baker Mayfield threw for 276 yards and 3 touchdowns in Cleveland's 37-30 victory. A rare feat for any Browns' team to win against a strong Steelers team. Ben Roethlisberger played poorly, completing just 15 of his 30 passes for 205 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception. James Conner rushed for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns off 21 carries. Cam Newton throws 7 touchdowns as New England sets the tone for next season
The Patriots rolled over the Jets, 49-14. Cam Newton showcased his ability to win games by throwing for 293 yards and 7 touchdowns. Damiere Byrd caught 10 passes for 91 yards and 3 touchdowns while Devin Asiasi and Jakobi Meyers caught 2 each as the Jets struggled with Sam Darnold at quarterback. The Jets have the #1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft are on the inside track to draft Trevor Lawrence.

Cards beat Rams to leapfrop them in the NFC Playoff seedings
Kyler Murray tossed 2 touchdowns and 270 yards as the Arizona Cardinals beat a turnover riddled Rams team, 30-24. Larry Fitzgerald caught 9 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown in his final regular season game and DeAndre Hopkins caught 5 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. Seattle punches ticket to divisional round after convincing win over New Orleans

SEATTLE, JANUARY 10 -- There were exorcism of the demons when New Orleans came into town to face a Seattle Seahawks team, which may just be the best in the league. New Orleans set the tone on the first drive of the game, where Tre’Quan Smith broke free and went for 20 yards. The drive went for 11 plays and was capped off with an Alvin Kamara rushing touchdown. Seattle’s response? 3 and out after DJ Swearinger brought Carson down with one yard to move the chains. And that’s when the momentum turned in the game. New Orleans looked prime to cause an upset until Drew Brees threw an interception which was returned for a touchdown. Just two drives in, the Saints’ offense would never be the same again. The Saints’ defense forced the Seahawks to punt again on 4th and 1 as the game was tied 7-7 going at the end of the first quarter.

New Orleans was never quite good enough on a day they needed to be excellent. To start the second quarter, they started on their 5 yard line which saw a 13 yard pass over the middle to Tre’Quan Smith set up a 13 yard run through the middle by Alvin Kamara. At midfield, the Saints collapsed and had to punt. Then the big play ability kicked in. On a simple slant pass, Tyler Lockett delivered a nasty stiff arm to Marshon Lattimore for a 73 yard touchdown. Seattle were up, 14-7, despite playing so poorly to start the game. The Saints weren’t the same again. Mistakes started to kick in. New Orleans’ second drive saw a 4th and 1 conversion from Latavius Murray on their own 30 yard line. Several plays later, Jamal Adams delivered a crunching hit on Alvin Kamara which dislodged the ball on Seattle’s 47 yard line. The Saints defense had to respond. On third down, Russell Wilson moved out of the pocket with a huge amount of pressure. He never took a sack today but he in came the yellow flag. A roughing the passer call against DJ Swearinger moved the ball to New Orleans’ 36 yard line. A few plays later, Tyler Lockett scored on another slant against Lattimore to give the ‘Hawks a 21-7 lead.

Jamal Adams would pick off a hail mary pass by Drew Brees to end the second quarter. Seattle were too conservative and gave the ball back to New Orleans. A huge 31 yard reception by Michael Thomas set up the 56 yard field goal to end the first half and give the Seahawks a comfortable 24-10 lead.

The second half was a statement by Seattle. On their first drive, Russell Wilson looked on the other side of the field for DK Metcalf on a slant for a 61 yard touchdown. A huge whiff by Malcolm Jenkins caused an empty patch of field. New Orleans would respond with a 9 play, 74 yard drive with Alvin Kamara catching a receiving touchdown from Drew Brees. Seattle answered back with another touchdown drive. They never relinquished their lead and never looked like doing so. New Orleans turned the ball over five times, with two fumbles coming from running backs Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray, whose fumble early in the fourth quarter sealed any sort of comeback.

It’s a disappointing end to the career of Drew Brees, who came so close to a second Championship but could never get there. It’s a disappointing end to the season for New Orleans, who will be wondering how closed their Super Bowl window is facing a rebuild. On a day when their offense needed to perform, it never rose to the occasion. The defense played better than expected, having held Seattle to 3 of 11 on third downs but allowing two big plays which resulted in 14 points.
