Players To Watch


Bill Connelly, ESPN: For Buffalo, it's easy to point at junior quarterback Elijah Holmes, who has come in for injured Jason Wright to lift the Bulls to the MAC Championship game. He's taken good care of the football, only throwing four interceptions through eight games played, while tossing 1,794 passing yards and 13 touchdowns. He's not very mobile, and doesn't extend plays with his legs. Defensively, sophomore cornerback Kobi Blackwell is an absolute dog in the MAC with incredible speed. He didn't have any turnovers this season, but his incredible coverage blanketed top receivers this season. Wide receiver Wayne Harris will have his work cut out for him to stay involved in Kent State's pass offense.

They started their season somehow losing to Albany, and then a few weeks later, upset a then-ranked Penn State that triggered a six-game winning streak that survived a sudden change at quarterback. Kent State has its own inconsistency issues, and almost choked away their final game of the regular season against Eastern Michigan. I think Buffalo gives the Golden Flashes a little more than they can handle and leaves with the championship.

We have seen what happens when Kent State doesn't hit their home run ball or get clear lanes for their stout running game. They grow desperate very quickly and their defense breaks like a dam barely holding its water. Dru DeShields looked mighty beat up against Buffalo, so I question just how healthy he is going into this game. I think Buffalo is just in better shape going into this game, and they'll escape with a win."
