49ers Replace Shanahan With McDaniels
Image

The San Francisco 49ers are hoping the third time is the charm, hiring New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to replace the recently dismissed Kyle Shanahan.

"I've learned a lot. I'm not the same guy who was hired in Denver and Las Vegas. I'm ready for what I know is my final opportunity to do this right," declared McDaniels at his introductory press conference.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, who had the #1 offense in the NFL last season, will be on the search for a new offensive coordinator after Zac Taylor was hired by the Seattle Seahawks.

Other notable hirings include the New Orleans Saints hiring Dan Quinn, the Cincinnati Bengals hiring of Kyle Shanahan, and the Jacksonville Jaguars hiring Raheem Morris.

Steelers Hire Liam Coen As Next Offensive Coordinator

Image

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced the hiring of former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen as their next offensive coordinator following Zac Taylor's departure for Seattle.

"I never had the opportunity to work with Liam in Los Angeles, but Coach McVay always spoke highly of him," praised Nathan Scheelhaase at Coen's introductory press conference. "When we had an opening on the staff, he was one of the first guys that came to mind. Getting a brilliant offensive mind like Liam is going to help soften the blow of losing a guy like Zac."

"I'm just ready to get back to winning games," said Coen a few minutes later, when asked how he planned to move on from his time in Jacksonville. "Obviously, things didn't work out in Jacksonville. I wish they had. But now I'm here and I'm ready to help get these guys one game further and reach the Super Bowl."

Despite being interviewed for both the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers openings, Brian Flores stays on the staff as the Steelers defensive coordinator for his third season.

Steelers Reach Last Minute Deal With Harmon, Tag DK

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - The Pittsburgh Steelers spent the better part of the 2029 season operating under the quiet assumption that Derrick Harmon was as good as gone.

The financial math seemed to demand it. Extensions for Joey Porter Jr., Cooper DeJean, Harold Perkins Jr., and Kelvin Banks Jr. had consumed significant cap space, and the organizational priority had consistently been the secondary and linebacker corps over retaining the interior defensive lineman. When Banks Jr.'s extension was finalized during the season, it appeared to slam the door shut on any realistic path to keeping Harmon in Pittsburgh.

Then Khan's phone rang.

"That's all on Derrick," Omar Khan said when the four-year, $124 million extension was announced. "He had his agent make a last-minute call expressing that he wanted to stay. He wasn't looking to set records with a new contract, he just wanted to stay and help bring another Super Bowl to Pittsburgh."

The deal falls well short of the market-setting four-year, $160 million extension Jalen Carter signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, and Harmon was transparent about why he left money on the table.

"I always think about when Albert Haynesworth left Tennessee for Washington chasing that big contract, and how it didn't work out," Harmon said. "I didn't want that to happen to me. I know what I have here in Pittsburgh, and they know what they have in me. We both wanted to get it done and get back to the most important job; getting to the Super Bowl again."

While Harmon's situation resolved itself in Pittsburgh's favor, the franchise faced a considerably harder decision at wide receiver, one that ultimately had no clean answer.

With both DK Metcalf and Zachariah Branch approaching free agency simultaneously, Khan was forced to choose. Tag the three-time Offensive Player of the Year in Metcalf, or bet on the younger, explosively dynamic Branch as the long-term centerpiece of the receiving corps?

Pittsburgh chose Metcalf, applying the franchise tag at a value of $52 million for the 2031 season.

"DK is still a premier receiver at 32," Khan said. "We loved Zachariah, but DK is one of those rare talents that commands a defense to change their entire scheme. That opens things up for everybody around him."

Khan indicated the two sides hope to convert the tag into a two-year extension that would provide Metcalf with long-term security while softening the immediate cap impact. In the meantime, Branch will hit the open market when free agency begins, a significant loss for a receiving corps that benefited enormously from his ability to create explosive plays in space.

Behind the scenes, the reasoning behind the decision was more pointed than Khan's diplomatic public comments suggested.

"DK has produced as the number one guy his entire career," one source told ESPN. "No one is opening things up for him, he's the one opening things up for others. Khan and Scheelhaase felt that Branch's success was more a product of playing alongside elite talent than individual dominance. That's the distinction that ultimately drove the decision."

With Harmon re-signed and Metcalf tagged, Pittsburgh turns its attention to a free agent landscape that will test Khan's creativity and cap management skills as thoroughly as any offseason of his tenure. Sixteen players are set to depart, headlined by NFL rushing champion Quinshon Judkins, whose departure, long anticipated given Pittsburgh's investment in Juan Steward and Rueben Owens, nonetheless represents the loss of one of the most productive backs in the league over the past three seasons.

The free agency moratorium window opens in three days.

From there, as Khan himself acknowledged privately, all bets are off.

TJ Watt Returning For 'At Least' One More Year

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - T.J. Watt is coming back.

The Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive captain announced Friday that he will return for at least one more season, ending any uncertainty about whether the 34-year-old edge rusher would hang up his cleats following one of the finest individual campaigns of his already legendary career. The decision was not made lightly, and Watt was careful to frame it in terms that went well beyond the chase for Bruce Smith's all-time sack record that has dominated the conversation surrounding his future.

"The record will be nice," Watt said with a measured smile. "A Super Bowl would be better."

Watt, who sits at 191.5 career sacks—just 8.5 behind Smith's all-time mark of 200—acknowledged that the record is a goal, but was clear that it was never going to be the sole reason he continued playing.

"I've never been someone who plays for numbers," he said. "If the only reason I was coming back was to chase a stat, that wouldn't be good enough for me, and it wouldn't be fair to my teammates. That's not why I play this game."

The factor Watt identified as perhaps the most significant in his decision was one that carries deeply personal weight — his health.

"I feel genuinely good," he said. "Not 'good for my age' good. Just good. I can still bend the edge, I can still win one-on-one, and I'm not hiding from anybody. I think about my brother and what he went through, the toll the game took on his body, and I'm grateful every single day that I'm in a different position. I don't take that for granted. But I also know that can change, and I'm not going to be the guy who holds on one year too long because he couldn't let go. I'll know when it's time."

The implicit message was clear — this commitment covers one year, and potentially one year only. Watt was not announcing a contract extension or a multi-year commitment. He was announcing that the time is not yet now.

A conversation with General Manager Omar Khan proved to be a decisive factor in solidifying that decision.

"Omar laid out a vision for how we get back to the Super Bowl next season," Watt said. "Not in a vague, 'we're going to figure it out' kind of way. A real vision, with real pieces. I believed him. That matters to me. I'm not coming back just to come back — I'm coming back because I genuinely believe this team can win a championship, and I want to be part of that."

Khan, reached for comment Friday afternoon, was characteristically brief but genuine in his response.

"T.J. Watt is the heartbeat of this defense and one of the greatest players this franchise has ever had the privilege of building around," Khan said. "We're going to do everything in our power to make sure his faith in us is rewarded."

Watt's return anchors a Steelers defense that, even with the uncertainty surrounding several pending free agents, projects as one of the most formidable units in the AFC heading into 2031. Whether this is truly his final season remains an open question Watt declined to answer definitively — but the way he spoke Friday, with the quiet urgency of a competitor who understands exactly how finite his remaining opportunities are, suggested that everyone in the building is treating it that way.

"I've had a lot of great moments in this league," Watt said as he wrapped up his media availability. "I want one more. The right one."

Pittsburgh Steelers Free Agency Preview

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - The Pittsburgh Steelers rebounded from a roller-coaster 2028 season where they 7-10 by nearly climbing the mountain again. The Steelers went 15-2 during the regular season before ultimately falling to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Las Vegas Raiders in the AFC Championship Game.

Despite the stinging loss, the Steelers are in one of the more enviable positions in the entire league, with most of their long-term core now locked up and ready to make one final run.

Retaining both Derrick Harmon and DK Metcalf on the cusp of free agency was a huge boon for the Steelers, who now enter the moratorium period with very few pressing needs to address.

Thankfully, the Steelers have done a tremendous job building through the draft, with last year's multitude of selections after trading out of the first round, helping soften the blow of a number of departing free agents. Troy Fautanu's departure is offset by Steven Seri being ready to start after a year on the bench, while the Steelers have Chimere Dike and several younger wide receivers to help replace Zachariah Branch.

That being said, here are the most pressing needs for the Steelers going into the free agency period.
Halfback
Key Departures: Quinshon Judkins, Jerrick Gibson
Incumbents: Juan Steward, Rueben Owens, Ashton McCree, Bo Lacey

Quinshon Judkins was the kind of bargain bin find championship teams are made of. The Cleveland Browns cut Judkins just weeks before the 2027 NFL season and the Steelers quickly scooped up the former second round pick. Judkins helped lead a Steelers rushing attack that made the Super Bowl in 2027, then anchored the defense through the brutal 7-10 2028 campaign. Judkins again lead the league last year in rushing, but with Juan Steward's drafting in the second round last year, no one expected a fourth season in Pittsburgh for Judkins.

All indications out of Pittsburgh are that it's Juan Steward's job to lose to replace Judkins, but the Steelers will look to add a veteran presence to the room, or a younger power-back to compliment Steward's explosiveness.

Potential Targets: Mark Fletcher Jr., Ollie Gordon Jr., Javonte Williams, Jonah Coleman

Free Safety
Key Departures: Ji'Ayir Brown
Incumbents: Sal Stanley

Ji'Ayir Brown wasn't the star of the Steelers defense, but he was the reliable veteran presence who was everywhere he needed to be. Brown tallied 102 tackles with three TFLs, one sack, and one interception in the 2029 campaign. With Jermaine Ward emerging as an aggressive, playmaking strong safety, the Steelers are reportedly searching for a center-field type of complimentary safety to minimize the explosive plays in the passing game that hampered the Steelers at times in 2029. Sal Stanley is currently the only FS on the roster, but still projects more as a special teams ace that full-time starter.

A reunion with either Brown or Alohi Gilman is on the table, but with a weak free agency class Pittsburgh may look to address the position in the draft, where they hold two first-round picks, or via trade.

Potential FA Targets: Evan Williams, Ji'Ayir Brown, Ar'Darius Washington

Linebacker
Key Departurs:Patrick Queen
Incumbents: Jason Verdon, Harold Perkins Jr., Landon Mackey, Hugh Brooks

Patrick Queen has been the most consistent Steeler over the past four-seasons not named TJ Watt, but at 31-years old and with Jason Verdon emerging as an athletic impact linebacker in his own right, the Steelers decided to use the money Queen would have commanded to pay Harold Perkins Jr. this offseason. Verdon and Perkins Jr. combine to form the most athletic linebacking duo in the NFL, but with little depth behind them. This is another situation where Pittsburgh would be looking for a veteran insurance policy rather than an All-Pro caliber player.

Pittsburgh hasn't closed the door on a reunion with Queen, for the right price, but may ultimately look to the draft or the trade market to fill the void, with few MLBs that fit their scheme available.

Potential FA Targets: Patrick Queen, Junior Colson
