Angels make splashy trade with Doyle move

The Los Angeles Angels acquired outfielder Brenton Doyle from the Colorado Rockies on Saturday for right-hander Victor Mederos, infielder Denzer Guzman and minor league pitcher Talon Haley.

Doyle, 28, is a two-time Gold Glove winner in center field. He hit .204 with seven home runs and 48 RBIs in 2026, the worst offensive season of his career and a steady erosion from 2024, when he hit .260 with 23 homers, 72 RBIs and 30 stolen bases.

The defense is what the Angels are paying for and it has not moved. Doyle has been among the best defensive outfielders in baseball since he reached the majors in 2023, covering ground few players in the league can with an arm that grades near the top of the scale. Los Angeles ran a patchwork center field in 2026, shuffling players through the position out of necessity rather than fit.

He also gives new manager Rocco Baldelli something the previous staff did not have. Doyle has stolen 20 or more bases in three consecutive seasons at a high success rate, and the Angels were among the least aggressive baserunning teams in the American League last year.

The bat is the question. The decline has been gradual rather than sudden, which is the more concerning version. His contact rate has slipped in each of the last two seasons and the power followed it down. Coors Field complicates any evaluation of a Colorado hitter, though Doyle's road splits in 2026 were not meaningfully better than his home splits, which suggests the problem is mechanical rather than environmental. The Angels are betting a new hitting staff and no leftover relationships with the coaches who could not fix it will make a difference.

If it works, the roster starts to look like something. Doyle and Zach Neto, who hit 32 home runs and 75 RBIs and is expected to sign a long-term extension this winter, would give general manager Kim Ng two premium up-the-middle defenders who also produce at the plate. Neto turns 26 in January and Doyle turns 29 in May.

The move also fits a pattern that predates Ng. The Angels spent the 2026 deadline acquiring Ke'Bryan Hayes, Ben Williamson, Addison Barger and Rafael Marchan, all defenders first, and now have elite gloves at third base, shortstop, second base and center field. That matters more with Rhett Lowder joining a rotation that will lean on contact management rather than strikeouts.

Colorado gets two arms and an infielder with no clear path in Anaheim. Mederos, 24, went 4-6 with a 4.35 ERA and 60 strikeouts over 80.2 innings in his first extended major league look, taking Yusei Kikuchi's rotation spot after the July trade to Cincinnati. Guzman, 22, is a middle infielder who is blocked by Neto. Haley, 21, is a right-hander in the lower minors.
