Pride is a fickle thing and for Jake Fette, he simply couldn't swallow his pride anymore.

The four-star QB from the 2029 recruiting class earned his spot in the lineup early during his time in Tempe. Fette took over for the inconsistent Cutter Boley midway through the 2026 campaign under Kenny Dillingham, eventually starting nine games for the 8-5 Sun Devils.

Fette would lead the surprising Liberty Bowl victory over Texas A&M, despite the absence of Kenny Dillingham, and was mostly effective in his true freshman season. Fette threw for 1,868 yards with 22 touchdowns in his nine games, but also tossed a frightening 13 interceptions.

When Charlie Weis Jr. was hired, he indicated to Fette that he would be given "significant" opportunity to be the starting quarterback for the Sun Devils in 2027. Then, Weis Jr. went and got Austin Mack in the transfer portal and nothing was the same.

While it was publicly billed as a quarterback battle, those close to Fette indicate the El Paso native never saw it that way.

"He thought it was a lot of posturing. At the end of the day, Mack won. And he felt that was exactly what Weis Jr. and Samples wanted," revealed the source.

"Whether that's true or not is irrelevant. It's what Jake believes."

Mack was named the starter well before the Sun Devils went to Camp Totozona and led the Sun Devils to a perfect 13-0 record with a Big XII championship before being unceremoniously eliminated by the Ole Miss Rebels in the Sugar Bowl.

When Weis Jr. met with Fette for his exit meeting, Weis Jr. once again reiterated that Fette would be given heavy consideration for the starting role. When Fette asked if the Sun Devils were going to add a quarterback in the portal, Weis Jr. was direct.

"We're going to explore every avenue to make this team better and continue our quest for a National Championship," was Weis Jr.'s response, according to the source.

Reportedly, Fette was unimpressed.

"If you can't guarantee me the starting job, I'm leaving," the source revealed as Fette's reply.

Jake Fette may have been the first to throw his hat into the transfer portal, but he definitely wasn't the only one. Joining him are five other Sun Devils, whose decisions to leave Tempe vary between playing time, coaching fit, and, of course, NIL money.

The writing was on the wall for Jason Brown Jr., who has been a steady member of the running back room and made the most of his limited opportunities. Brown Jr. saw slightly more playing time two years ago under Kenny Dillingham, carrying the ball 24 times for 149 yards and a touchdown. While he'd add another touchdown this year, his carries shrank to just three as he fell behind Austin Carlisle, Demarcius Robinson, and Cardae Mack, with Kyson Brown entrenched as the feature back.

Add in that both Carlisle and Robinson reportedly received increased NIL money a week ago, while Brown Jr. remained on his original offer, and it was the worst-kept secret in Tempe that he was heading elsewhere.

"You see Carlisle get $750K, Robinson and Mack get $500K each, and Brown Jr. is still sitting at his original $200K. Something had to give," shared a source close to Brown Jr.

While Brown Jr.'s decision was entirely money-driven, Jessiah McGrew is leaving in search of a coaching staff that he believes will better prepare him for the next level.

"I want to go to the NFL, period," said the junior safety. "I think Coach Weis is great. But I want to go somewhere that's going to give me the exposure to make it to the next level."

As confident as McGrew sounds, those around the country are far less optimistic about the decision.

"You have to wonder who's giving this kid advice, because this is probably the worst decision I've seen in a long time," said one Big 12 scouting director. "He's got talent, and Arizona State loved him. He was a guaranteed starter next year, hands down. To chase a bag—because let's be realistic, money is always an underlying issue—and go somewhere like Florida State or Miami, where you aren't even guaranteed to start?" The director shook his head for emphasis.

"He had a chance to get drafted after another good season for a winning Sun Devils club. If he ends up somewhere and isn't a prominent player? It's over."

Joining them in the portal are WR Cory Butler Jr., backup QB Tommy Goldberg, and reserve linebacker Ramere Davis, none of whom saw the field last season for the Sun Devils.

With these six additions, Arizona State's departing class has ballooned to 29 players, including a staggering 15 former starters.

"That's what happens when you grab some guys from the portal, they're mercenaries for a season or two, then you have to load up again," admitted Weis Jr. "We're trying to find a better balance where you don't have this much ebb and flow, but it happens."

"For anyone who wants to write us off for how much talent we're losing, go ahead. Just be ready for us to cash that check when we're back in the Playoff next year," added the second-year head coach with a smirk.

National Champion QB George MacIntyre Enters Transfer Portal

What is it with the Tennessee Volunteers and losing their quarterbacks over NIL disputes?

Despite winning the 2027 National Championship while throwing for the second-most yards (4,710) and touchdowns (40) in the country last year, Tennessee quarterback George MacIntyre has announced his decision to enter the transfer portal.

"I don't expect everyone to understand my decision," declared MacIntyre in a statement, "But there are irreconcilable differences between myself and the University of Tennessee."

"I do not know what the future holds, but I am excited to begin the next chapter of my college football career."

What MacIntyre didn't say in his prepared statement was perhaps more glaring than what he did. According to a source close to Tennessee's athletic director Danny White, the decision by MacIntyre was "100% money based."

"Danny is livid. They had agreed to a new NIL deal with MacIntyre at the end of the regular season before the playoff run. MacIntyre had agreed to it in principal and all sides had agreed to sign off on the paperwork once the season was over," repeated the source, "Then, the Vols go on a run. MacIntyre out-duels Darian Mensah in the National Championship and throws four touchdowns in the win. Now his camp comes back. They don't want $2M anymore. They want $5M. As a starting point."

"The Vols simply didn't have the liquid assets. Believing they had a deal done, they'd given out substantial raises to other members of the team in hopes of keeping their core together. They explained that to George, told him to wait it out and they'd make it right. He flat out refused. So here we are."

MacIntyre started as a true freshman last year for the Volunteers before leading the Volunteers not only to the playoffs in his second collegiate season, but claiming the ultimate prize.

MacIntyre may be the most shocking quarterback to enter the portal, but he's far from the only one.

Houston's Keisean Henderson, Utah's Byrd Ficklin, Wake Forest's Grant Lawless, Washington's Triston McMillan, and TCU's Jack Daulton are other notable quarterbacks searching for a new home this offseason.
