Cal's regular season ended with a scare, but the Golden Bears got exactly what they needed: another win.

No. 6 California held off Pittsburgh 30-27 on Saturday to finish the regular season 11-1 overall and 8-1 in ACC play, keeping its College Football Playoff hopes firmly intact heading into championship weekend.

It was far from a flawless performance.

Pittsburgh actually outgained Cal 380-342 and averaged 7.5 yards per play. The Panthers repeatedly found ways to move the football, particularly through the air, and stayed within one possession for virtually the entire afternoon.

But Cal made the plays when it mattered.

And now the Golden Bears are heading into the postseason as one of the nation's premier teams.

Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele once again provided the steady hand Cal needed.

The sophomore completed 20 of 27 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns, good for a 74.1% completion rate.

His first touchdown came in the second quarter, when he found Chase Hendricks for a 10-yard score to put Cal back in front after Pittsburgh had briefly taken the lead.

Later, Sagapolutele connected with Dajuan McKinley on a 2-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, giving Cal a 24-10 advantage.

That lead, however, wouldn't last. The Panthers answered with a touchdown pass from Mason Heintschel to Bryce Yates, then cut further into Cal's lead when kicker Samuel Hunsaker drilled a 55-yard field goal with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.

That's where kicker Towns McGough took over.

McGough connected from 32 yards with 7:03 remaining, giving Cal a 27-20 lead.

After Pittsburgh threatened, cornerback Daniel Harris came away with a huge interception in Golden Bear territory. Cal's offense stalled again in the red zone, but McGough came through one more time, drilling a 35-yard field goal with 1:59 left to put the Golden Bears ahead 30-20.

Pittsburgh moved down the field with ease and answered with a touchdown just fourty seconds later, but with no timeouts remaining, would need to recover an onside kick for any hope of completing a comeback. They would not.

The victory completes a remarkable regular season for Cal. 11-1, their most wins in school history (10 wins 7 times).

The Golden Bears have earned their place among the nation's elite. Saturday's win over Pittsburgh wasn't their prettiest, but at this point in the season, style points don't matter. Survive and advance. Cal did exactly that and now Berkeley waits to see where the Golden Bears' remarkable season takes them next.
