2027 Week Thirteen Preview
Arizona (4-7) @ #2 Arizona State (11-0)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Week Twelve Preview Image By: Emilio Suarez
Published: November 26th, 2027
Arizona State heads into Senior Night with a perfect undefeated record, the final unbeaten team in the country, but they have a bigger victory in mind. Bringing home the Territorial Cup, which has resided in Tucson since 2025.

The Arizona Wildcats overcame a brutal start to the 2027 season, riding a four game win streak to pull themselves above .500. Right when it looked like the Wildcats were finding a groove, they floundered. Arizona would go on a four game losing streak, including losses against sub .500 UCF and Colorado. With a bowl game firmly out of reach, the only consolation left for what could be Brent Brennan's final game for the Wildcats is keeping their arch-rival from seizing the Cup.

Pitchfork Points

Image Don't get over-confident.

We went into Tucson last year against a 4-7 Wildcats team and walked out covered in our own piss after a 23-17 loss. We can't do that again. For all the success we've had this year, and there is hopefully more to come, a loss to our arch-rival to not only conclude the regular season, but also end the undefeated regular season, would sting more than usual. Play sound football, control the TOP, and let's bring the Cup home.

Image Don't get caught scoreboard watching.

In addition to the Sun Devils not getting overconfident against a rival, they've also got to be vigilant not to look ahead. If Baylor wins against the Utah Utes, they'll be our opponent in the conference championship. If they falter, then it will be the Cougars if they beat the Buffaloes. Regardless of who makes it to championship weekend, we need to take care of business this weekend.

Image Can Martell Hughes' return help the run game?

It's no coincidence that without Martell Hughes in the box, we've struggled against the run. Three straight games we've given up over four yards a carry in the run game, including allowing 186 total yards to the Houston Cougars. The only question is if there's going to be any rust for Hughes to knock off following the suspension. I fully expect his return to correlate with a stout run defense, just in time for the conference championship.

Sun Devils Seize Territorial Cup In Defensive Slugfest
10 Arizona (4-8) @ #2 Arizona State (12-0) 24 | Mountain America Stadium | Tempe, AZ.
By Emilio Suarez Image November 27th, 2027
It wasn't the mud hole stomping victory every Sun Devil fan dreamed of, but at the end of the day, the Territorial Cup is heading back to Tempe after a physical 24-10 win over rival Arizona.

The Sun Devils marched their opening drive of the game down the field with ease, ending with Austin Carlisle hauling in a swing pass and jetting 21 yards for the touchdown. Combined with the quick three-and-out from the Wildcats, this game had all the early makings of a blowout.

Then the Wildcats defense showed their teeth. While the Zona offense continued to sputter, their defense held on for dear life. On three straight possessions the Sun Devils marched into the red zone. On three straight possessions the Wildcats forced fourth down. And on all three they came up with the stop, including an interception of HB Austin Carlisle out of the Wildcat.

After the third red zone stand, Oscar Rios was finally able to spark some life into Arizona, using a pair of scrambles to get Zona just close enough for a 54-yard field goal before the end of the half.

A field goal in the third quarter—which was cheered loudly by the Sun Devils fans—stretched Arizona State's lead back to a touchdown, but it was a sequence in the fourth quarter that finally sealed the game. Still clinging to a 10-3 lead, Jaren Hamilton took his seventh punt return of the night and made it count, weaving through the Wildcats special teams for an electric 70-yard touchdown return.

Just two plays later, on the ensuing Arizona possession, Rios airmailed a pass to Luke Ferrelli that turned into a Kyson Brown touchdown as the Sun Devils salted away the physical rivalry win.

Sun Devils Nearly 'Done' With Class of 2031
As calendar flips to December and early signing day looms, the Sun Devils are in a comfortable spot
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Season Preview Image By Diego Alfaro
Published: December 1st, 2027
Arizona State may be ranked second in the nation behind a sparkling 12-0 record, but their recruiting class of 2031 isn't expected to rank nearly as high as their counterparts. Despite that, the Sun Devils have done a nice job of targeting high-value three-star prospects as Weis Jr. and Co. have tallied 15 commitments to this point in the season, good for 37th nationally and sixth in the Big XII.

"We're not going to out-leverage Texas and Oklahoma," explained Charlie Weis Jr. when speaking about recruiting during the off-week for Navy vs. Army, "At least, not yet."

"That means we've got to find those guys who fall through the cracks. Diamonds in the rough, if you will. We feel like our class has that. We're comfortable with where we are right now."

The Sun Devils have 23 graduating seniors, including current stars like Austin Mack, Keon Keeley, and Kyson Brown, but despite that, GM Josh Omura was cautious about relying too heavily on the transfer portal.

"It's a great tool, but that's just it. A tool. Not a realistic avenue to continue to stay competitive," warned Omura. "We get it, we're likely a rebound school for a lot of collegiate athletes who maybe can't break through at Alabama or Georgia. And we're fine with that. But we're not the only school competing for former four-and-five star prospects. Everyone is. So if you try and live by the transfer portal to replace outgoing talent, eventually you're going to strike out."

The Sun Devils philosophy according to both Omura and Weis Jr. is a competitive balance.

"You can't just ignore the transfer portal," laughed Weis Jr., "We've seen what happens to guys who do that. But like Josh said, you can't rely on it in totality either. So it's a balance."

Over the last two years, the Sun Devils have found that exact kind of balance. Two years ago under Kenny Dillingham, a number of freshman played pivotal roles on the team including QB Jake Fette, HB Cardae Mack, and HB Demarius Robinson. They also had the transfer portal additions of Owen Long, Ashton Stamps, Lyrick Rawls, and others contributing.

This year's team is eerily similar. LB Barry Seitz is the only true freshman taking meaningful snaps for the Sun Devils, but a number of underclassmen still litter the starting lineup with Joseph Smith and Antonie Belgrave-Shorter playing prominent roles alongside transfers Austin Mack, Austin Carlisle, Keon Keeley, and others.

"That's going to continue to be the blueprint. Bring in quality players to groom, then add a few specialized pieces in the portal to take our team from good to great."

"It's worked out so far," remarked Weis Jr. with a grin.

Currently, the Sun Devils only Big Board target without at least a verbal commitment is 663rd-overall recruit Jimmy Hoag, a defensive end from local Phoenix, Arizona. According to sources close to the Peoria High School recruit, he's deciding between ASU and Big XII foe Iowa State, with the Memphis Tigers a distant third.

With Championship Weekend looming, and only one recruit to manage, Josh Omura acknowledged now is the time to start scouting potential portal targets.

"You can't talk to them yet, but there's always rumors about who is doing what," acknowledged Omura. "Without a ton of recruits to balance, we can really start putting our ears to the ground, see who's about to shake loose, and do our due diligence."

2027 Conference Championship Weekend Preview
#17 Baylor (10-2) @ #2 Arizona State (12-0)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Week Twelve Preview Image By: Emilio Suarez
Published: December 10th, 2027
The Sun Devils are back in the Big XII Championship Game, marking their second appearance in the four years since they joined the conference. Their opponent in Arlington this weekend? The Baylor Bears.

Baylor has utilized the best rushing attack in college football—churning out 2,756 yards this season—and a penchant for winning close games to surge to 10-2 in Scott Satterfield's first year in Waco. Now, they're making their return to the Big XII championship game after winning their only title in the 2021 season.

Pitchfork Points

Image Stop.The.Run.

It's simple. Baylor goes as their three-headed monster of Caleb Komolafe, Michael Turner, and DJ Lagway go. We absolutely have to force Lagway into a passing QB. Does he have the talent to beat us still? Yes. But he also has the talent to completely implode having to be a pocket passer, and that's what we have to bank on. If we let the Bears start to prowl, we're in for a long afternoon.

Image Is the offense bored, or is there a lingering issue?

Back-to-back games now and Austin Mack has looked...off. He completed less than 50% of his passes against Cincinnati and struggled to push the ball downfield against the Wildcats. We can expect Baylor to key on Austin Carlisle and Kyson Brown, for good reason. Mack has to shake off whatever has ailed him the last few weeks and punish them for it.

Image Control the clock.

If this turns into a track meet the Baylor Bears absolutely have the athletic ability to keep up. We have to force them into risky plays by controlling the clock and limiting their possessions. They can't be content to grind out drives with their rushing attack if the clock is disappearing faster than they can snap the ball. Forcing them to abandon their game plan should 100% be our defensive game plan. They've won 10 games by running the ball. Let's see them let it fly.

Can’t even get any blue chip recruits in after an undefeated season? Wild stuff. Scott Satterfield turning Baylor around right away is crazy

I've got house rules in place so I can't recruit above my prestige level. We are still a 3* prestige, so only 3*s for us so far.

They didn't do anything crazy in the portal last year, so it's gotta be the scheme change that's allowing their run game to eat. They're running the Pistol now. only thing I can think of
