2027 Week Seven Preview
#13 Arizona State (6-0) @ TCU (3-2)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Week Seven Preview Image By: Emilio Suarez
Published: October 15th, 2027
Arizona State takes their red-hot offense on the road as they head to Fort Worth, Texas, hoping to go into the bye week with a sparkling 7-0 record. TCU may be having an up and down season, currently at 3-2, but they have the talent on both sides of the ball to send the Sun Devils back to the drawing board during their bye week.

Pitchfork Points

Image Can the Sun Devils keep Mack upright?

DT Walter Cannon is eating quarterbacks alive this season, tallying six sacks and recording at least one per game through the Frogs' first five games. His production has helped the entire defense, which ranks inside the top-10 in team sacks this year. The Sun Devils entire offense is based on rhythm, if Cannon is allowed free rein into the backfield, that rhythm is in big trouble. If they can slow down Cannon, it should go a long way to minimize the entire pass rush.

Image Is Jack Daulton a QB? Let's not find out.

The TCU Horned Frogs have a wealth of talent offensively. The only question mark? QB Jack Daulton. The redshirt freshman has only four touchdown passes, although he has chewed up 1,500+ passing yards, and his ability to push the ball downfield, or lack thereof, is what's hindering the otherwise talented Horned Frogs offense. If he finds a groove, these Horned Frogs could go from harmless to poisonous in the blink of an eye.

Image Less big plays, period.

Twice the Sun Devils defense got beat over the top for long touchdowns against the Cyclones. It's the Achilles heel of a high-pressure, man defense. But we have to limit those explosives, period. We did a great job of bending, not breaking, against Utah. If we can combine that performance with the one we put on tape against the Cyclones, we'll be at a happy medium. I understand this is being nit-picky, but I absolutely hate seeing the ball go over our defense's heads more than once a game. We're better than that.

Arizona State Survives Toughest Test of the Season In Fort Worth
35 #13 Arizona State (7-0) @ TCU (3-3) 28 | Amon G. Carter Stadium | Fort Worth, TX.
By Emilio Suarez Image October 16th, 2027
Despite three missed field goals and 176 rushing yards by Caleb Hawkins, the Arizona State Sun Devils held on for a 35-28 victory that proved to be their toughest matchup of the 2027 season.

The TCU Horned Frogs opened the contest with a steady diet of Hawkins, setting up what would be the game-plan for much of the game, as the junior carried the ball six times on the opening drive and chewed up 62 of the 75 yards on his way to the one-yard touchdown to open the scoring.

Arizona State took the more explosive route, with Austin Carlisle hauling in a crossing route, then leaving three separate TCU defenders clutching at air as he juked his way to a 75-yard touchdown. Jaren Hamilton followed it up with a electric punt return and the Sun Devils appeared to be rolling to another runaway victory.

The Horned Frogs wouldn't go away that easily. Ka'Morrean Pimpton mossed Martell Hughes before rumbling 45 yards for the improbable touchdown. After Cardae Mack retook the lead for ASU with a 62-yard touchdown run, Trevor Christman snatched the momentum right back with a pick-six, the second TCU interception in the first half.

Mack was unfazed, marching the Sun Devils back down the field, finding Demarius Robinson for a 1-yard score with one second on the clock, then splitting the safeties on a 42-yard touchdown to Jaren Hamilton that would ultimately prove to be the difference.

Caleb Hawkins would add his second touchdown in the fourth quarter, cutting the score to 35-28 with his 33-yard sprint, but as time ticked away and the TCU offense had to turn to the passing game, Jack Daulton didn't have the magic. Daulton went 1/10 in the fourth quarter as the Horned Frogs struggled to move the ball without Hawkins churning out yardage.

Daulton may have had one more opportunity to force overtime, but Charlie Weis Jr. gambled on his QB and came up aces, twice. On the final drive of the game that milked the final three minutes and 37 seconds, Mack completed two fourth-down conversions to keep the clock and chains moving.

"We just felt like we had all the momentum and didn't want to relinquish it," stated Weis Jr. after the game when asked about the gutsy calls. "That speaks to our confidence in the offense and defense. We can make those kind of gambles knowing we've got a world-class unit on the other side that will make up for it, should we falter."

Thanks to Weis Jr.'s gutsy play calling, Austin Mack's composure, and some timely defensive stops the Arizona State Sun Devils roll into their bye week as the odds-on favorites to reach the Big XII Conference Championship Game at 7-0 with the Texas A&M Aggies on deck in two weeks' time.

QB Austin Mack

That played out a lot closer than you would have liked, and TCU were definitely let down by poor QB play towards the end. Have to agree with Caesar that Big XII has to be on the cards this season!
