Kent State announces DeShields to start at QB against Akron

KENT, Ohio - Ahead of their Week 8 clash against MAC foe Akron, the Kent State Golden Flashes have announced a change at quarterback. Junior quarterback and original Week 1 starter Dru DeShields has been reinserted into the lineup and will start after missing the past month with knee cartilage tear. Backup freshman quarterback Deante Ruffin has started in his stead, going 3-1 in his relief.

Offensive coordinator Khalil Prince is adamant that the job returning to DeShields is not an indictment on Ruffin's poor performance in last weekend's away loss against South Florida.

"We lost as a team, and putting all of the blame on Deante [Ruffin] is a cheap shot at a young man trying to catch his bearings when he couldn't have possibly thought he was going to be thrust into action so suddenly," commented Prince ahead of the announcement that DeShields would be taking over the starting job. "Dru [DeShields] never lost the job due to performance. Not giving him the opportunity after he's fought so hard to play this game would be a disservice to the gentlemen that put a ton of sweat equity into their craft. We commend Deante for his performances. Without him, we would still only have one win."

Ruffin, a redshirt freshman from Philadelphia, PA, threw for 1,238 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, but unfortunately added nine costly interceptions in those 7 games he's seen action in. He's added two touchdowns on the ground as well.

"I definitely need to do better taking care of the ball going forward, but I take this as a largely positive time period," commented Ruffin, who indicated he did not see his benching as a personal slight on his abilities. "Dru is the quarterback of this team and if my number is called again for any reason, I'll be better prepared. For now, my job is going to be to help prepare Dru as best as I can to help this team win football games."

After two consecutive weekends on the road, the Golden Flashes will return to Dix Stadium to battle against a 1-6 Akron Zips squad.

No better time to get your starting QB back after the loss to USF, time to bounce back against the Zips

Needed that honestly. Deante Ruffin's limitations were definitely felt against USF. No more excuses leftover.

Players To Watch

Bill Connelly, ESPN: I mean, it has to begin and end with the return of Kent State quarterback Dru DeShields. As much as Deante Ruffin gave a decent effort in his absence, DeShields performed admirably against two titan squads in South Carolina and Ohio State and absolutely ran through Wofford College. As far as return games go, it can't get much easier than playing an Akron squad that's only win comes against Robert Morris. Wide receivers Marcel Williams and Kyan Mason will look to pick up the slack for the injured running back Jordan Grant, who was the engine of their offense.

Experts Evaluations

Tom Fornelli, Writer: "Just don't think that Akron is going to be able to give Kent State much to worry about. Their defense can't stop a cold. I would have been fairly confident in a Deante Ruffin-led Kent State squad, but getting Dru DeShields back as well? This one might get ugly for the Zips."

Richard Johnson, Writer: "Can definitely see the Golden Flashes leaning on what typically works for them, especially with Dru DeShields being eased back into the offense. Their run game and their quick game is going to get a lot of work early and often. I can see Jakorion Caffey and Da'realyst Clark seeing the end zone this evening."

Chris Hummer, 247Sports Writer: "Okay, maybe I leaned a little too hard last week and got burned by Brian Hartline and South Florida. No way that happens again. Jakorion Caffey, please. I need this one for my reputation."
