When Arizona State Sun Devils defeated then 25th-ranked UNLV last week, it was expected. Nobody expected this though. The Arizona State Sun Devils jumped all over Michael Hawkins Jr. from the opening whistle, ending the first two drives for the Mountaineers offense the same way.

With a pick six.

Combined with an explosive 75-yard catch-and-run by Kyson Brown, the Sun Devils hotfooted their way to a 24-0 first-quarter lead in the eventual 66-7 massacre.

"They did a great job of keeping Michael in the pocket, then biting the underneath routes. We didn't have enough time to push the ball deep, so it was like fighting uphill all game," sighed Rich Rodriguez after the Mountaineers second-consecutive loss.

While Hawkins Jr. struggled—three pick-sixes, two sacks, and only 107 passing yards—Kyson Brown shined with 274 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns, easily proving who deserved to be in the Heisman conversation.

"Nah," laughed Kyson Brown when asked if he had extra motivation to put on a show with Hawkins Jr. on the other side, "I can't control all of that, so I'm not stressing it. I'll play my game and if the voters think that's Heisman worthy, that's the way they'll vote."

It was an emphatic statement from the Sun Devils who have jumped out to a 4-0 start with no signs of slowing down.

Arizona State will return to Tempe to host the Utah Utes in a late Saturday night kickoff next week.

we got the benefit of a really easy schedule this year. BYU was really the only team we've played so far that could have given us a problem. UNLV was a paper tiger and WVU just didn't have the defense. Once we snagged those two early picks of Hawkins it was wraps. Won't always be that easy, but we'll take em when we can get em!

Charlie Weis Jr. is off to a running start in the desert, navigating the Sun Devils to an early 4-0 start. Now, the success is translating on the recruiting trail too.

It wasn't long after the Sun Devils returned to Tempe that the news of Charlie Weis Jr.'s first verbal commitment became official.

"You see what Weis Jr. is doing in just a few short games in the desert. How can you not want to be a part of that!?" posted Jay Bourne on IG.

Bourne, the 361st-rated prospect, is a mammoth of a tackle standing at 6'7" and weighing in at 292 pounds and excels in pass-protection, according to Anthony Peerman of On3.

"He is certainly a giant of a man, but that isn't his only calling card. He's got long arms due to his size and does a great job of keeping the defenders off his body, engaging between the pads and keeping them from gaining leverage. He's got great footwork in pass protection and rarely gets overpowered, only giving up one sack in the last two years at Lompoc High School in California."

"The problem is that he struggles pulling as a run blocker, bad. It may be due to his height, or just lack of technique, but once he gets on the move out of his initial position, he struggles to maintain his leverage and often gets overpowered, leading to more than a few tackles for loss," added Peerman.

For the Sun Devils, Bourne projects as a project in their current system, which has been increasingly run heavy at the start of the season, but Peerman sees the vision.

"They aren't going to stay run-heavy forever," cautioned Peerman. "Weis Jr. is going to want to start bombing deep. And once they get the personnel to do it, it's going to be deadly. Bourne is one piece of many I expect to signal an offensive identity shift in the next season or two."

Bourne may be the first commitment to announce his intent to head to Tempe, but he certainly won't be the last. Arizona State is hosting a number of recruits this coming weekend when the Utah Utes come to town, including CB Manuel Saldiveri and LB Alex Minnis.

Behind their third win over a ranked opponent on the season, the Arizona State Sun Devils have finally crashed the Top-25 party, debuting at #20 as they prepare for a Week 5 clash with the Utah Utes at Mountain America Stadium.

The last time the Sun Devils cracked the Top-25 came last season, and it was a short-lived appearance. The Sun Devils dropped back-to-back games to close out the 2026 season on a sour note.

Heisman contender Kyson Brown will look to keep his strong season churning, hoping to keep the Sun Devils in the Top-25 rankings for at least one more week in the process.

Can they corral Ficklin like they did Hawkins?

Michael Hawkins Jr. was a legitimate dual-threat quarterback, and Arizona State's defense clipped his wings and made him a pocket passer, resulting in three interceptions in the win. They'll have to do the same thing to Ficklin, who is the Utes' leading rusher as well as their starting quarterback, to keep from suffering another early exit from the Top-25 polls.

Offense needs to be strategic.

Utah brings one of the worst-rated defenses in the nation to Tempe on Saturday night, but that doesn't mean the Sun Devils can get lackadaisical with the ball. We saw last year that even when our offense was clicking, a few turnovers can swing momentum, permanently. If Austin Mack can play clean and Kyson Brown keeps running roughshod, we should be alright. Let's just not count our devils before their due.

Keep recruiting momentum with visits.

Arizona State nabbed their first commitment of 2027 in Jay Bourne, but with four recruits visiting Tempe this weekend and a resounding win over Utah would do wonders to keep the momentum going.
