RALEIGH, NC • The Golden Bears were 20 yards away from keeping their perfect season alive.

After leading for most of the afternoon, No. 8 Cal watched a 10-point halftime advantage disappear as NC State scored 21 unanswered points, putting the Golden Bears on the brink of their first loss of the season.

But Cal refused to go quietly.

The Golden Bears got the touchdown. They got the two-point conversion. They got the defensive stop. They even got into field-goal range. But with a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, Towns McGough's kick hit the left goal post, ending Cal's comeback and handing the Golden Bears their first loss of the season, 35-32.

Adam Mohammed opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run. NC State answered with a 19-yard touchdown pass from C.J. Bailey to Jayden Scott, but Cal immediately responded.

Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele connected with Chase Hendricks for a 14-yard touchdown, restoring Cal's lead at 14-7.

Mohammed found the end zone again, this time from five yards out, pushing Cal's advantage to 21-7. NC State answered with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Bailey to Keenan Jackson, then McGough drilled a 51-yard field goal with 35 seconds left in the half, sending Cal into the locker room with a 24-14 lead.

The third quarter was where everything changed.

Cal's offense went silent, managing zero points while NC State's defense consistently forced the Golden Bears into difficult situations. The Wolfpack took advantage. Scott scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 7:44 remaining in the third quarter, cutting Cal's lead to 24-21.

With 11:55 remaining in the fourth quarter, Scott struck again, this time from 9 yards out, giving NC State its first lead of the afternoon at 28-24.

The Wolfpack weren't finished. Just over two minutes later, Bailey himself powered into the end zone from one yard out. NC State scored 21 unanswered points across the third and fourth quarters, and suddenly Cal was staring at a 35-24 deficit with their perfect season on the line.

Sagapolutele drove Cal down the field and connected with Dorian Thomas for a 6-yard touchdown, cutting NC State's lead to 35-30. They needed two and they got it as Sagapolutele scrambled up the middle and powered his way into the end zone, pulling the Golden Bears within three.

After NC State's offense had controlled the second half, Cal's defense finally forced the Wolfpack off the field, giving the Golden Bears one last possession with a chance to complete an improbable comeback.

Cal moved the ball into field-goal range, setting up McGough with a chance to tie the game. After everything that had happened — the early lead, NC State's second-half surge, the 11-point deficit and the late touchdown — the Golden Bears had a legitimate chance to escape Raleigh still undefeated.

The kick went up and then it hit the left goal post. No good. The comeback ended inches away from completion. NC State celebrated as Cal walked off the field with its first loss of the season.

luckily our season isn't over and everyone is beating each other up so we still have a shot at the playoffs. Gotta take care of business against Virginia next.
