College football spring practice QB battle updates, starter predictions at Mississippi State

As spring practice comes to a close for most teams this month, there are five undecided quarterback competitions we're keeping an eye on across the Power Four ranks, along with several others expected to continue into fall camp later this year.

Schools are allotted 15 spring practices for player development, schematic installation and position battles before breaking for the three-month offseason ahead of the 2029 season. Multiple scrimmages -- and a spring game for a few -- provide coaching staffs with live action to determine where a competitor stands in the quarterback race and who leads the huddle with precise decisions.

For transfer quarterbacks, spring drills are imperative toward establishing relationships and familiarizing themselves with personnel and terminology before the real fight begins in August.

The latest ahead of Saturday's spring game: The veteran of the group, McWhorter has survived through two different head coaches and three different offensive coordinators. He started all twelve games of their four win season in 2027, throwing for 3,104 yards with sixteen touchdowns and eleven interceptions. He looked special in the bowl game, throwing for 430 yards on just 31 attempts as he split time with the lefty, David Ficken.

Mixon comes in with plenty of hype and a rumored NIL deal that is around the $3 million mark. Can they afford, quite literally, to put $3 million on their bench in a redshirt year? Football wise, that might be the best case scenario and transition into a starting role next season but after such a huge investment, Mixon is going to be given every opportunity possible to start this season.

MSU head coach G.J. Kinne is taking his time with the decision and expects the competition to continue into fall practice, unlike last offseason when it was the Austin Carlisle Show from the moment he signed. Kinne has harped on leadership qualities throughout practice, notable considering Mississippi State replaces the wealth of its offensive production from last season and has a couple new starters up front.

I took the NIL points that Ohio State/Oregon/Alabama had spent and compared that to their reported NIL budget and then created a conversion formula for it so for each NIL point, it's roughly like $6,730. Not an exact science but so far, the numbers are relatively reasonable
