Mississippi State's Austin Carlisle declares for NFL Draft

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State quarterback Austin Carlisle announced Tuesday that he will forgo his remaining eligibility and enter the 2029 NFL Draft, where he is projected as a first-round pick.

Carlisle finished his final collegiate season completing 327 of 480 passes for 4,107 yards, 45 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, adding 1,296 rushing yards and 14 more touchdowns on the ground. He led the Bulldogs to a bowl win in his lone season in Starkville after transferring in from Texas State, where he swept the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Doak Walker and Paul Hornung Awards and finished as a Heisman Trophy finalist a year earlier.

Carlisle's college career included stops at Houston, UL Monroe, Texas State and Mississippi State.

Carlisle is widely regarded as one of the more unique prospects in this year's draft class given his dual-threat production and multi-positional experience, having also played running back and receiver earlier in his college career.

Mississippi State has seen seven players enter the transfer portal so far this offseason, headlined by two key players on offense as last year's record breaking offense continues to sustain losses with quarterback Austin Carlisle heading to the draft.

WR Marshaun Evans — A redshirt junior, Evans caught 25 passes for 354 yards and two touchdowns this past season as a starting outside receiver.

RT Dalton Toothman — A redshirt sophomore, Toothman started at right tackle for the Bulldogs, playing 1,097 snaps while allowing six sacks.

CB Kaylib Singleton — Only played in six games due to injuries. Still finished with 25 tackles and an interception

CB Terrell Johnson Jr. — Key starter at corner with 4 pass breakups and 53 tackles as one of the boundary corners.

TE Zayion Cotton — A junior, Cotton led all Mississippi State tight ends with 45 receptions for 690 yards and four touchdowns.

HB George Wick — A redshirt freshman, Wick emerged as one of the breakout stories of the season after moving from receiver to running back in the spring, finishing with 76 carries for 402 yards and three touchdowns on the ground to go with 70 receptions for 1,173 yards and 12 touchdowns through the air.

EDGE Ryan Penn — A transfer from Tulsa a year ago, Penn didn't have the production that many expected but was still an every game starter for the Bulldogs.

The top unsigned quarterback from the 2030 recruiting cycle, Brett Mixon, will be on campus this weekend, visiting the Mississippi State Bulldogs as he draws nearer to making a decision between MSU, BYU and in-state TCU.

Mixon, who hails from Argyle in Denton County, Texas, is the 15th ranked quarterback in the country and has long been considered a BYU lean. The Bulldogs made a strong push during the Early Signing Period and were able to hold him off from signing with the Cougars during the Early Signing Period.

A lot of investment have went into the recruitment of Mixon, even with the returning of quarterback Brodie McWhorter who did not enter the portal like many expected. McWhorter had a standout performance in the bowl game, splitting time with David Ficken and still throwing for five touchdowns and 450 yards.

Mixon would be the highest ranked quarterback prospect to sign with the Bulldogs out of high school since KaMario Taylor.

Brett Mixon commits to Miss State over BYU as staff turns focus to the portal

Brett Mixon is a Mississippi State Bulldog.

The four-star quarterback shut down his recruitment in the middle of his on-campus visit this past week, announcing on social media that he is committing to the Bulldogs. Mixon is the highest ranked quarterback to sign with Mississippi State since KaMario Taylor and is the highest ranked recruit in the G.J. Kinne era. He picked the Bulldogs over BYU and TCU.

As a prospect, Mixon is a natural thrower with a big arm and good touch. He's played some tough competition at Liberty Christian, playing in the highest and most competitive classification for private schools in the state. He's got good size at six-foot-two and 217 pounds with a sturdy built.

He's not the most fleet footed of quarterbacks and would be a drastic departure from Austin Carlisle, who was able to mask a lot of the issues that MSU had up front and even with his athleticism, Carlisle was sacked fifty times.

That's probably why the Bulldogs have been linked to a lot of offensive linemen in the portal. They're trending in a positive direction with Georgia's Titus Lincoln, who played in fourteen games last season for the Bulldogs at right tackle and allowed four sacks. Illinois' Kai Pritchard and Memphis' T.J. Trahan are other names that have been bandied around as potential additions along the interior.

The Bulldogs are also looking at bringing back tight end Zayion Cotton, who entered the portal after a 690-yard season. Kentucky and Virginia are the names to watch in that recruitment but Miss State's coaching staff has made it clear that Cotton remains a priority for them and would welcome him back.

That doesn't appear to be the case with Marshaun Evans, who saw his production take a dip last season with the change in offense. Instead, the Bulldogs are looking at other options at receiver in SMU's Carterrious Brown (55 catches, 634 yards) and Vanderbilt's Owen Cabell, who has proven production in the SEC with nearly 900 yards and eight touchdowns with the Commodores.

Mixon's commitment gives the Bulldogs a slight bump, coming in at No. 69 on the 247 Composite Team Rankings, placing them ahead of Vandy in the SEC.
