Transfers to Watch: Who Texas State could target as the portal opens

With spring roster turnover in full swing, Texas State enters the transfer portal cycle with clear needs at receiver and depth questions at running back and along the defensive front, after losing Kylen Evans to the portal on offense, along with several defensive departures.

Here are some names worth watching as the Bobcats look to fill out the roster.

WR Wayne Harris, Kent State — Harris caught 45 passes for 598 yards and three touchdowns last season and has ties to new head coach Mark Carney from their time together at Kent State. If Harris follows Carney to San Marcos, he'd be an experienced, ready-made complement to whoever ultimately leads the receiver room.

WR Ardell Banks, Kent State — Banks (22 catches, 304 yards, 1 touchdown) gives Texas State a second potential Kent State connection at receiver, adding a depth option with familiarity with Carney.

RB Jakorion Caffey, Kent State — Caffey (361 yards, 4 touchdowns) is another name tied to Carney's old program and could give the Bobcats added depth in the backfield as they navigate turnover at the position.

WR Marcellus Jackson, UL Monroe — Jackson caught 50 passes for 417 yards and four touchdowns last season and is now back in the portal after a single season with the Warhawks. With Mosley's ties to ULM still fresh, Jackson is a name worth watching as a potential familiar-scheme fit.

TE Bryce Anderson, UL Monroe — Anderson posted a strong 41 receptions for 601 yards and seven touchdowns last season before also entering the portal. Like Jackson, his brief overlap with Mosley's old program in Monroe makes him a logical name to connect to Texas State's search at tight end.

CB Ahamad Chapman, UTSA — Chapman recorded 52 tackles and six pass breakups last season and has a built-in connection to new defensive coordinator Jess Loepp, who coached him at UTSA. A natural fit if Loepp wants to bring over a piece of the secondary he already knows well.

EDGE Dylan Spencer, UTSA — Spencer (20 tackles) gives Texas State another potential Loepp-tied target as the Bobcats look to replace Ta'Darius Collins along the edge.

RB Will Henderson III, UTSA — Henderson put up 946 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, but reports indicate he's likely to look toward a Power Four opportunity rather than a lateral or downward move, making him more of a long shot than the other names on this list.

Grading the Texas State 2027 Transfer Portal Class

Texas State reloads through the portal as Mark Carney adds a mix of familiar faces and Power Four talent,
positioning the Bobcats to contend immediately in their first season under a new staff

The Bobcats supplement a 28-man high school signing class with a transfer haul that ranks 28th nationally, according to the 247Sports Industry Composite, the highest-ranked class in the Pac-12. New offensive coordinator Texas State head coach Mark Carney and his staff leaned on familiar faces and former staffs to fill out the roster in year one.

Class Grade: B+

Key Additions

WR Wayne Harris, Kent State: Harris follows head coach Mark Carney from Kent State, where he caught 45 passes for 598 yards and three touchdowns last season. His familiarity with Carney gives him a head start in an offense otherwise adjusting to a new scheme.

QB Austin Carlisle, UL Monroe: Carlisle enters the fold as arguably the most fascinating name in this class. Under new Texas State OC Jaleel Mosley's system a year ago, Carlisle broke UL Monroe's single-season records with 3,667 passing yards and 33 touchdowns, adding another 1,430 yards on the ground. With Brad Jackson firmly entrenched as the starter, his dual-threat skill set and existing chemistry with Mosley's scheme make him an obvious candidate to be deployed as a gadget piece, lining up at receiver, in wildcat packages, or on designed keepers while he waits his turn behind Jackson.

WR Jamaal Jordan, UCLA: A former four-star prospect out of Alexandria, Louisiana, Jordan never got on the field in Westwood. At 5-foot-8 and 167 pounds, he profiles as a quick, shifty slot option who could thrive in Mosley's scheme with a real opportunity in front of him. If he produces, don't be surprised if Jordan is a name back on Power Four radars within a year or two.

TE Nick Lautar, Ohio State: Lautar arrives from Columbus after landing behind one of the deepest tight end rooms in the country. A three-star signee out of Lebanon, Ohio, who was ranked among the top 20-30 tight ends nationally in his class, Lautar caught 38 passes for 511 yards and eight touchdowns in his final high school season and profiles as a fluid receiving threat who also brings real blocking power. With a clearer runway in San Marcos, Lautar has a real shot to start immediately.

Sleepers

HB Jabree Coleman, South Carolina: A former four-star prospect out of Allentown, Pennsylvania, Coleman sat behind a crowded backfield. With only two scholarship running backs currently on Texas State's roster, Coleman walks into about as clear a path to real carries as he could hope to find.

HB Darrell Smith, Louisiana Lafayette: A depth piece at 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds, Smith gives the Bobcats another body in a running back room that needed reinforcements.

SAN MARCOS — Halfway through spring practice, Texas State's biggest storyline isn't a single position battle , it's a relationship.

Quarterback Brad Jackson and first-year offensive coordinator Jaleel Mosley have spent as much time together off the field this spring as on it, working through install concepts on the whiteboard and grinding through film sessions as they build the kind of shorthand that usually takes a full season to develop.

"We're still in the getting-to-know-each-other phase in some ways, but it doesn't feel that way anymore," Mosley said. "Brad's a smart player, he processes things fast, and the more time we spend together, the more it feels like we're speaking the same language."

Jackson said the extra time has paid off already.

"It's not just install anymore, it's understanding why we're doing something a certain way," Jackson said. "Once you get that part down, the rest starts to slow down for you."

Helping bridge that gap has been transfer quarterback Austin Carlisle, who spent last season playing for Mosley at UL Monroe. Carlisle, who led the Sun Belt in rushing last year, has exclusively played quarterback so far this spring, and while he won't push Jackson for the starting job, Mosley has been clear that Carlisle's role goes beyond a traditional backup.

"Austin's got a skill set that's hard to find in a QB2," Mosley said. "But right now, my focus with him is on being a quarterback first. We'll figure out the other stuff later. I want him getting better at the fundamentals of the position before we start talking about how else we can use him."

Up front, the picture is less settled. Texas State returns two established starters in left tackle William Boone and center Rasheed Jackson, but the rest of the line is still being sorted out. Guards Max Kirkland and Jon Welch-Spencer both played in rotational roles a year ago, while Ameer Rose has also gotten reps at guard, primarily on the right side. Right tackle remains the biggest question of the spring, with Tory Moulton and Bam Badusi both rotating between tackle and guard as the staff searches for the best combination.

On defense, the Bobcats are counting on Phillip Bradford to take the leap from a flash player to a true difference-maker at EDGE, with Texas State needing to replace significant defensive line production lost to the transfer portal and graduation.

The secondary presents a different kind of challenge , plenty of experience in terms of eligibility, not much in terms of game reps. Redshirt senior cornerback Michael Patterson, redshirt junior cornerback Christopher Jones, and redshirt senior safety Chase Davis are all older players still searching for extended playing time, while redshirt junior Will Mitchell II stands as the only returning starter in the group, having started eight games a year ago.

Too early to say honestly. We're currently rated in the low 60s but looking to see how we progress in the offseason and see how we stack up with the rest of the conference
