Definitely got a soft spot for Kent State. Ran with them a few times and one of my homies played there back in the day. Better get that wagon wheel.

Kent State was on my shortlist last year before I chose Arkansas State, so I'm looking forward to this go around.

Kent State taps former USF receivers coach Khalil Prince as new Offensive Coordinator

KENT, OH. - The Kent State Golden Flashes football program has announced that offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Clay Patterson has been ousted heading into the 2026 season. Replacing him is 33-year-old Khalil Prince, promoted from wide receivers coach at the University of South Florida.

Prince is expected to get full control of the offense under head coach Mark Carney and call plays for the Golden Flashes. He'll also coach quarterbacks while working in collaboration with current wide receivers coach Isaac Vance.

"Getting the opportunity to draw out my vision for how an offense can be run means more to me than I could ever express," Prince said upon the announcement. "I can't thank Coach Carney enough for taking a chance on me and putting me in this position."

It's the latest chapter in a coaching career that started later - and came from further away - than most.

A native of Hartford, Connecticut, Prince starred as a wide receiver at Weaver High School, where he was projected as a three-star recruit and held offers from Syracuse, West Virginia, and South Carolina. Instead of playing college football, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Classified as a Specialist in the Army Infantry, Prince was deployed to eastern Afghanistan in 2013 during Operation Enduring Freedom. He was wounded in an ambush while on patrol, and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal with Valor and a Purple Heart for saving a fellow soldier during the engagement.

The injuries - significant damage to his leg - ended his military career and were serious enough to end any hope of playing college football. He was honorably discharged shortly after.

Unable to continue playing, Prince turned to coaching. Between 2015 and 2018, he served as a graduate assistant and quality control coach at Virginia State, a Division II program in Petersburg, Virginia, working under offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mark Carney - the same Carney who has now hired him at Kent State.

The stability didn't last. When Carney left Virginia State to become quarterbacks coach at Charlotte, Prince's life began to unravel. A stint in a rehabilitation facility in upstate Virginia removed him from coaching altogether, in what he now calls "dark, but life-changing."

"I was spiraling more than I ever thought anyone would notice," Prince said of his struggles after returning from deployment. "I had grown really dependent on the medication I was prescribed after I returned stateside, and I didn't realize just how much my addiction was impacting my day-to-day."

What followed, Prince says, was "a second opportunity at life." He joined the staff at the University of South Florida, where he spent the next four years working his way back up - first as a graduate assistant, then quality control coach, and eventually wide receivers coach. Along the way, he survived three different coaching transitions: under Jeff Scott from 2020 to 2022, on an interim basis under Daniel Protash to close out the 2022 season, and under Alex Golesh from 2022 through this past season. When incoming head coach Brian Hartline - arriving from Ohio State, where he coached wide receivers - cleaned house, Prince's contract was not renewed.

That opened the door back to Carney, who wasted no time bringing his former Virginia State assistant to Kent State.

"He's experienced in every sense of the word despite his young age," Carney said, already fielding questions about the potential concerns of hiring someone with Prince's history. "He passed all of the tests with flying colors. He can, without a doubt, be trusted with the lives and careers of these young men, and I'm looking forward to winning football games with him. He's an asset to Kent State."
