Good work securing the W over Kansas, though that 4th quarter was looking a bit shaky.

yeah not sure what caused the switch to flip. It may have just been the big run giving them momentum, which if true is cool. Defense is just a tad slower than I normally like and that's playing a role too.

2-1 is exactly where I thought we'd be. 8-4ish is my goal. BYU, Tech, maybe Utah will test us. Colorado possibly too. Baylor was a game I was on the fence about until I saw the injury to DJ

Two weeks ago, the Week Five clash between the Baylor Bears and Arizona State Sun Devils looked like a showdown between two of the dark horse candidates to steal the Big 12 from the likes of Texas Tech and BYU. The Sun Devils bounced back from a tough loss to A&M with a thrilling—despite some suspect defense in the final frame—win in London. Baylor was not as lucky, dropping their first game of the season to the Colorado Buffaloes. To add insult to injury, DJ Lagway suffered a dislocated ankle one week prior—in a 37-3 win over LA Tech—forcing redshirt freshman Edward Griffin into action.

Griffin finally found his groove late in the 48-27 loss to Colorado, but the quest doesn't have any pit stops this week as the Bears stalk their way into Tempe to face the rested Sun Devils.

Image What happened in London during the 4th quarter?
Midway through the third quarter, ASU had a sizeable 28-7 lead and appeared well on their way to a comfortable win. Then Dylan Edwards and Isaiah Marshall each broke off 76-yard touchdown runs and suddenly the Sun Devils were in a dogfight. They managed to scrape out the win, but that marks two straight second halves where the defense faltered. Two weeks ago in College Station, it cost them a marquee win. Last week it nearly caused their own upset. Simply put, ASU needs to find a way to play four full quarters of quality defense. Without DJ Lagway, the Sun Devils should have a field day against the inexperienced Griffin. Key word being should. If they don't we may want to buckle up; it's going to be a long season on defense.


Image Can the offense generate chunk plays consistently?
In Week One against Morgan State, Boley was firing deep and connecting. Even against A&M, Boley had his fair share of deep passes. In London, Boley looked cautious throwing the ball, often dumping it off underneath rather than risk the interception. It's too much of a correction from the gunslinging he was doing earlier in the season. Less interceptions is the goal, but not at the sacrifice of our big play ability. You saw it late in the win over Kansas. Without the threat of a deep ball, Kansas played close to the line of scrimmage and were disruptive, breaking up many of the RPO and screen passes ASU countered with. This offense is humming when the threat of the deep ball is there. Kenny Dillingham has the receivers to keep defenses honest. But does he have the quarterback?

Image Are we going to be able to stop the QB run?
Two weeks in a row and the Sun Devils have given up over 50 rushing yards and a touchdown to the QB. Two weeks ago, Isaiah Marshall ran for 69 net yards after absorbing five sacks. Without the sack yardage, he would have exploded for over 100, if not more. That's not a winning formula. Owen Long has been all over the field and appears well on his way to leading the NCAA in tackles once again, so you'd hate to lose his impact by putting him as a perennial spy. But someone is going to have to fill that role or risk every QB to look like '04 Madden Vick.

Arizona State's Offense Implodes During Second Half Of 38-17 Blowout

With star quarterback DJ Lagway on the sideline nursing a bum ankle, this was supposed to be a cake walk for the Arizona State Sun Devils at home. No one told Baylor that.

After redshirt freshman Edward Griffin—who played clean, mistake-free football—led an opening drive 10 plays and 77 yards for a touchdown, every other point the Baylor Bears put on the board came courtesy of an Arizona Sun Devils turnover.

Baylor would tack on a field goal early in the second quarter after Kyson Brown was stuffed on a 4th-and-1 dive at midfield. Cutter Boley and the Sun Devils would recover to close out the half, with Boley hitting Kyson Brown for a short touchdown before Jaren Hamilton scored with an electric punt return.

Much like the wins over Kansas and Morgan State, it appeared the Sun Devils simply needed a few quarters to find their groove.

Cutter Boley would throw two more touchdown passes in the second half. Unfortunately, they were both to the Baylor Bears as the Bears defense snagged an eye-popping five interceptions after the half—returning two for touchdowns—as they outscored ASU 28-3 to leave Mountain America Stadium in a stunned silence.

Arizona State had seven drives after halftime and outgained the Bears in total yardage 197-109. They went, in order: interception, punt, field goal, interception, interception, interception, interception.

"Brutal, just brutal," sighed Kenny Dillingham in his post-game press conference, "It was just one of those days where nothing went right. Credit Baylor. They made the necessary adjustments after the break and took advantage of our mistakes."

After throwing his third consecutive interception, raising his tally to a grotesque four, Dillingham sent out Jake Fette for the final drive of the game. Fette produced a few big plays, but unfortunately, the final drive of the game ended in the same fashion. Attempting to find Omarion Miller on a slant, the pass was tipped at the line and intercepted for the fifth total turnover collected by the Bears.

When asked if he felt the interceptions weighed on Boley as the game wore on, Dillingham was candid. "I think so, just shooting straight up here. It's hard for it not to. You're at home, coming off a bye week. You feel good. Then you make a mistake. Then another. And it just compounds. We talk all the time about not trying to throw a touchdown on the next play after a pick. It's not always easy to do it."

Dillingham was dismissive when asked if Boley's job was in jeopardy. "I'm not going to make a knee-jerk, emotional reaction moments after a tough loss. We'll watch the tape, see what we need to fix, and come back better. I fully expect that Cutter is going to be a big part of that."

Arizona State will host the winless Hawaii Rainbow Warriors next week.
