West Virginia Abruptly Fires Rich Rodriquez after One Season
Mountaineers throw themselves into the coaching carousel less than a year after Rodriquez's return
The Dominion Post
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia University has fired head football coach Rich Rodriguez after only one season, the university announced Sunday.
The stunning decision came immediately following the conclusion of West Virginia’s 2025 regular season and less than a year after Rodriguez returned to Morgantown for his second coaching tenure leading West Virginia.
“After evaluating the direction of our football program, we determined that a change in leadership was necessary,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said in a statement. “We appreciate Coach Rodriguez’s commitment to West Virginia University and wish him and his family the best.”
Rodriguez's comeback campaign was unremarkable, as the Mountaineers clawed their way to two wins in Big 12 play and four overall, finishing 4-8. The university did not immediately disclose a specific reason for the abrupt change.
West Virginia now enters a crowded national coaching market with the transfer portal and early signing period rapidly approaching. Several prominent head coaches, Power Four coordinators and candidates with NFL experience are expected to receive consideration.
No clear favorite has emerged, and university officials are expected to conduct a broad but accelerated search.
Rodriguez originally coached West Virginia from 2001 through 2007 before returning in December 2024. His highly anticipated homecoming was expected to restore the program’s identity and reconnect it with one of the most successful periods in its modern history.
Instead, the reunion has ended after only one season, leaving the Mountaineers searching for another new direction.

West Virginia Hires Randy Moss as Head Football Coach
Hall of Fame receiver and West Virginia native emerges as stunning choice to lead the Mountaineers
The Dominion Post
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. —West Virginia University has hired Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss as its next head football coach, the university announced Sunday.
The unexpected appointment concludes a weeklong search that began when WVU abruptly fired Rich Rodriguez after one season. Moss will become the 37th head coach in Mountaineer football history.
“This is home,” Moss said in a statement. “The opportunity to represent West Virginia and lead the Mountaineers means more to me than I can put into words. This state helped make me who I am, and I’m ready to give everything I have back to it.”
Moss, a native of Rand, West Virginia, was not publicly identified as a leading candidate during the search. His name emerged only as the university entered the final stages of negotiations, stunning both Mountaineer fans and the wider college football world.
Although Moss has never served as a college head coach, WVU officials believe his football knowledge, national profile and ability to connect with recruits could transform the program.
“Randy understands this state, commands respect throughout football and presented an exceptional vision for the future of our program,” Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. “We believe he can unite Mountaineer Nation and build something special in Morgantown.”
Moss starred at Marshall before recording 15,292 receiving yards and 156 touchdowns during one of the greatest careers by a receiver in NFL history. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
West Virginia is expected to surround Moss with experienced coordinators and established college recruiters. Building that staff will be his first priority as the Mountaineers prepare for the transfer portal and early signing period.
Moss is expected to be formally introduced Monday in Morgantown.
