Dallas, TX. - For three quarters, the Ace Bailey show appeared destined to lead the Utah Jazz to another playoff victory.

The third-year pro racked up 55 points as Utah clung to a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. But without Anthony Black's defensive presence anchoring the team, the inexperience of the young Jazz roster came into sharp focus.

Kyrie Irving took over, scoring 15 of his 31 points in the pivotal fourth quarter—including 10 in the final three minutes alone. The Dallas Mavericks exploded for 38 total points in the final quarter, pulling away decisively from a Jazz team that had no answer defensively down the stretch.

Black's injury had consequences that extended far beyond his individual defensive impact. With Keyonte George inserted into the starting lineup to replace Black, the Jazz lost their most reliable bench spark plug—a role he had filled perfectly all season.

"Keyonte George is the sparkplug off the bench for Utah," noted analyst Grant Hill during the broadcast. "Without Anthony Black on the floor, they need someone to provide that scoring punch off the bench. Tonight, they simply didn't have it. Beyond Black's elite defense, the loss of George's bench scoring proved to be a massive factor."

Utah's bench produced just 9 points—a woefully inadequate total that forced the starters to shoulder an unsustainable offensive load. Even with PJ Washington sliding to the bench in an attempt to offset the scoring void, the Jazz couldn't generate the secondary offense they needed.

The one bright spot for Utah was Marcus Smart's debut in the playoffs. The veteran made his first postseason appearance in a Jazz uniform, playing 23 impactful minutes featuring solid defense and timely playmaking—exactly what the team needs in the absence of Black.

Still, Smart's contributions weren't enough to overcome the fundamental issue: the absence of a true defensive anchor in crunch time.

Utah remains hopeful that Anthony Black will be available for Game 2, with his return potentially signaling a seismic shift in both teams' gameplans. His presence would allow the Jazz to restore defensive integrity and reinsert George back into his natural sixth-man role.

For now, the Dallas Mavericks will look to ride Kyrie Irving's veteran experience and playoff poise into Game 2.

Anthony Black is listed as day-to-day and will be a game-time decision for Game 2 in Dallas on Tuesday night.

This is getting out of hand. No player in NBA history has ever had more than 2 50-point games in a single postseason, and Ace Bailey has done it in four-straight games.

It's impressive, but wild.

he plays off-ball a lot, at least he has this series, so that probably contributes to that

OKC got knocked out in the play-in - dunno why cause they stacked. Jokic has a broken back from carrying the Nuggets for so many years, they haven't reached 30 wins two seasons in a row now

I had to go do some research after reading this. Ace is tied with Wilt for second-place in NBA history for most 50-point playoff games :pgdead:

Dallas, TX. - For one half, it appeared the Dallas Mavericks were on their way to taking a commanding 2-0 series lead.

The Mavericks built an 11-point halftime advantage, and more troubling for Utah: Ace Bailey had been held to just 9 points on 4-for-10 shooting—a stark contrast to his historic four-game stretch where he averaged over 50 points per game.

Then everything changed.

When the teams emerged from the locker room, Bailey came alive. He poured in 31 second-half points, including 16 in the pivotal third quarter, as the Jazz methodically dismantled Dallas's halftime lead. Utah turned an 11-point deficit into a 4-point advantage by the end of the third quarter.

Bailey's offensive explosion was complemented by Dallas's offensive collapse. The Mavericks had been red-hot from three in the first half, hitting 8 of 13 three-pointers. In the second half, they completely fell apart from distance, managing just 1 of 19 from beyond the arc.

The contrast was stark: Bailey went 10-for-19 in the second half after that dismal first-half performance, while the Mavericks watched their lead evaporate as their three-point shooting dried up entirely.

Anthony Black made his highly anticipated return after missing Game 1 with a knee injury, and his impact was immediate.

While Kyrie Irving still managed 29 points, his shot selection and efficiency remained problematic—he struggled to an 11-for-27 performance. Black's defensive presence, however, allowed the Jazz to reassert control. He added 19 points of his own while distributing 11 assists, immediately restoring Utah's offensive flow and defensive identity.

The return of Black also allowed Keyonte George to slide back into his natural sixth-man role, where he continued to thrive. George scored 23 points off the bench, providing the offensive spark the Jazz had lacked in Game 1 without George buoying the second unit.

With the series now tied at one game apiece, the teams head to Salt Lake City for Game 3.

The Jazz have proven they can compete when healthy, while the Mavericks will need to find a way to contain Bailey and restore their three-point shooting consistency. For Utah, the question becomes whether Black's return and their home-court advantage can finally stop the offensive juggernaut of Kyrie Irving and Cooper Flagg, who scored 33 points in a losing effort.

Game 3 tips off Friday night at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City.
