2031 Week One Preview - #1 Oklahoma vs. #2 Miami
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: August 31st, 2031

After defeating the Miami Hurricanes in the 2029 National Championship, Mario Cristobal and Co. had to wait an entire year for redemption, only to get a second helping of defeat as the Sooners claimed consecutive National Championships.

This year, they get an early opportunity to atone for those losses as the defending National Champion will head to Allegiant Stadium to face the Miami Hurricanes in the Vegas Kickoff Classic.

With a slew of new starters on each side, we'll take a look at the expected starting lineups before visiting with two-time National Champion Armando Leon in the first "Schooner Scoop" of the 2031 season.

Schooner Scoop

BT: "New season, same opponent. How much of an advantage does it give both you, and Mario Cristobal, that you're once again preparing for the same opponent you closed out the 2030 season facing?"

AL: "I don't think it gives anyone an advantage. We've both got different squads this year, different focal points. Schemes are roughly the same on both sides, but now we're losing the element of surprise that we had going into the National Championship with the added wrinkles Garrett gave us. But still, aside from knowing coaching tendencies and a few returning players, it's a clean slate game."

BT: "You mentioned new offensive coordinator Garrett Riley. What is the offense going to look like fully under his control? We've seen your last two Oklahoma teams lean heavily on the run game to set up the passing game, but Riley has routinely been one of the more aggressive passing offensive coordinators in the country. Are we going to see more of that style—almost like a repeat of his older brother Lincoln?"

AL: "If I knew how many times I was going to have to talk about Lincoln, after hiring Garrett, I may have passed on him. *laughs* Kidding, obviously. Lincoln and Garrett have the same general concept, but vastly different styles. And I think Oklahoma fans who were around for Lincoln, will appreciate that when they see Garrett. This isn't the old Mike Leach "use a swing pass as a running play" type of offense. We're going to line up and force the ball down your throat when necessary, but we've also got the ability to spread you out and slice you apart. It's going to be a fun chess match with a guy like Mario, who usually has a technically sound defense."

BT: "Last one, Coach. Notably, you've got a number of true freshman making their first start. Does the fact that it is coming on the national stage in the Vegas Kickoff Classic, against a team you just beat in the National Championship, add a little extra nerves for those guys, or are they locked in? And how do you handle that emotion for a young player?"

AL: "They're locked in and eager to prove they belong, Boone. What better stage to do that than in front of a national crowd, against the runner-ups? As far as managing those emotions, they've got a guy in the locker room whose lived it. Markelle Nickey is a captain this year for a reason, he's the calm, fearless leader a team needs as they navigate making history. He's spent time with all of our freshmen and talked about the ups and downs of that first year. He's been instrumental to everything we've done this season, and I expect a big year from him."

There you have it folks. Markelle Nickey is leading the charge. We're on a 26-game winning streak, back-to-back defending champions and quite frankly:

the standard is the standard.

Let's go start this season with a bang.

Defense and Special Teams Carry Oklahoma To Victory To Open 2031 Season
Boone Tillman // Sooner BornPublished: September 1st, 2031

It wasn't the explosive start many Sooners' fans had spent the entire offseason dreaming of, but in the end, the Oklahoma Sooners extended their win streak to 27 games with a hard-fought 31-26 victory over the Miami Hurricanes, who fall to 0-3 against Armando Leon since he arrived in Norman.

Oklahoma appeared to be in mid-season form early with a pair of touchdown drives, but after Tavares Maulet outraced Gordon Paul on a corner route, finishing the reception 91-yards later for a touchdown, the Sooners and Hurricanes were knotted at 14 with time ticking away in the first half.

After a holding penalty forced them deep into their own field, disaster struck. Markelle Nickey was sandwiched for a safety and came up favoring both his hand and shoulder on his throwing arm. It was a play that would have a ripple effect on the remainder of the game.

Miami would turn the free kick into a last-minute field goal and after a 19-point second quarter, entered the locker room with a surprising 19-14 lead over the defending two-time National Champion Sooners.

The third quarter would be the turning point where the special teams unit made their mark.

Nickey never looked the same in the second half, consistently dumping the ball short rather than standing in the pocket and looking downfield. The conservative play limited the Sooners' offense to a lone field goal in the second half. While the Sooners' offense struggled to generate any offense after a field goal drive to open the second half, their special teams unit made up the difference.

After Ty Dexter's 20-yard field goal split the uprights, safety Rodney Chester split the Hurricanes coverage unit, spearing the returner and forcing the critical fumble. Jason Pilgrim scooped up the gift and suddenly, before Jeremy Donnerson and the Hurricanes took the field, they were once again facing a deficit.

A quick three-and-out by Donnerson was equally disastrous, as Isaac Adcock—the 2029 Jet Award recipient—promptly returned the punt 70 yards to retake the lead for Oklahoma.

Still, Miami refused to go away. With their own offense struggling, it fell to the Sooners' defense to make a stand.

And did they ever.

Two of the Hurricanes' three drives in the fourth quarter ended with an interception. Freshman safety Quincy Enagbare snagged a pick in the red zone that not only halted a would-be touchdown drive, but kept the Hurricanes from kicking a field-goal that would have been crucial down the stretch.

Donnerson would recover and find National Championship standout Jesse Staat for a four-yard touchdown. While Donnerson won a battle, the Sooners would ultimately win the war.

With time ticking under the two-minute mark, Donnerson took the field with a chance to hand the Sooners their first loss since the 2029 season.

Instead, he handed Antwaun Phung his first interception, failing to put enough air under the corner route pass and thus, leaving the pass a sitting duck for Phung to snag.

And just like that, the Oklahoma Sooners opened 2031 the same way they closed 2030, with a win over the Miami Hurricanes.

Question One - James McDavid (OU Daily): "Coach, you won the game, but not without a price to pay. Multiple players left the contest at times with various injuries. Just first game fatigue, or a deeper issue?" And additionally, what's the status of Markelle Nickey's arm?"

Armando Leon: "You're always going to get some fatigue injuries in week one, no matter how much you prepare. You simply can't simulate live game experience, or the fatigue that comes with it. Guys are banged up, simply because they're tired, and we expect them to be fine going forward. Same with Nick. He took a shot on that safety and didn't feel right after, but he's the captain and did what captains do—grit it out for the team. He's going to feel a little rough around the edges, but from what I understand—he'll be fine for next week."

Question Two: Jabon Charles (The Miami Student): "Jeremy Donnerson threw for over 100 yards and a touchdown in the National Championship last year and just put up another 348 tonight as the starter. What about him makes it tough to slow him down?"

Armando Leon: "He's athletic and accurate, and that's a dangerous combo. When he starts to climb the pocket, you instantly think he's going to take off, but he's got the patience to goad the defense into sliding forward, then lollipops the ball over their head. It takes a lot of discipline and with a young team that's still learning, it's hard to simulate until you see it live. I'm glad some of our younger guys had some big plays—shout out to Q!—to help get them some confidence. We're going to need them this year."

Question Three: Meg Semental (SEC Network): "When injuries started to pile up as the game hit the midway point of the fourth quarter, did you start to worry about your depth overall? Most championship teams have depth pieces they poached from the portal with game experience; you on the other hand, have mostly unproven freshmen or underclassmen. Is that something that will become an issue later in the season?"

Armando Leon: "There's some truth to that statement in that, we do have lesser experience guys backing up our key players. But you know how they get that experience? By playing. End of the day, if my staff and I do our job, those underclassmen will be just as prepared as season veterans."

Game one of the Riley Era, technically Part Deux, and instead of a high-octane, explosive passing attack, I found myself wishing we still had Mack back there feeding Butch and Dill.

I get it, intricate system, new pieces, Nick got hurt midway through the game. But, c'mon. Show me SOMETHING.

We got the win, but it was not one that instilled anything resembling confidence. The defense bailed us out, but from the looks of it, we may be relying on them a lot to keep this win streak alive.

Prove me wrong, Nick.
