Sonia Bompastor has agreed to become the new manager of Real Madrid CF ahead of the 2028–29 season, ending weeks of speculation surrounding the future of the Spanish giants. In doing so, she will become the first female head coach in the history of the Spanish men’s top flight.

Real Madrid CF have completed a sweeping summer overhaul under new manager Sonia Bompastor as the club reshapes its squad around a possession-heavy system built to maximise Kylian Mbappé.

The headline arrival is Ethan Mbappé, who joins from Olympique Lyonnais for €40 million and is expected to start at left central midfield alongside his brother. Kobbie Mainoo also arrives in midfield in a €65 million move from AC Milan after helping guide the Italian side to Champions League glory last season, with the Englishman viewed as the replacement for Jude Bellingham at right central midfield.

At full-back, Arnau Martínez joins from Tottenham Hotspur FC for €51.8 million to become the starting right-back, while former Paris FC player Pedro Lima arrives for €31.2 million as depth in the position.

Further forward, striker Iker Bravo joins from West Ham United FC for €25 million to serve as Mbappé’s understudy. Wingers David Mella and Estanis Pedrola arrive from Deportivo de La Coruña and UC Sampdoria respectively to provide depth behind Michael Olise and Rodrygo.

Madrid were able to offset part of the spending through the sales of Masmud Ahmed to Atlético de Madrid for €37.8 million, Brahim Díaz to SSC Napoli for €91.8 million, Gianluca Mancini to Juventus FC for €30.8 million, and Mario Martín to Bologna FC 1909 for €16.7 million.

The new-look Madrid side is built around a technical, possession-based core led by Kylian Mbappé, who is expected to operate as the undisputed focal point of the attack between Rodrygo and Michael Olise.
