Disappointing exit against Schalke. 0-0 and 1-1. I never found it fair that one team would go through and the other would go out after 1-1 on aggregate. But hey, that was the rules back then. One of the few things, where everything wasn't better in the good old days...

They removed the away goals rule not too long ago! I think in 2022. And the European exit, I'm not even mad, our bench is just not good enough and I want to finish this first season ASAP

The United/Arsenal rivalry is taking form. Ferguson has established himself at Old Trafford, and Wenger is about to do the same at Highbury. What a time this was. Wenger relies on Seaman, Adams and Wright as the backbone... Just as Ferguson did with Bryan Robson in the early days. But he was finished, when the real successes came, and Wenger needs younger players to step up and find a more sustainable backbone. Sooner or later.

We still need some time to build our team, as I said, our bench is pretty poor. The '97 offseason brought a lot of new faces

Ravanelli... The Silver Striker (for turning grey so early). He scored mere months before this in the Champions League final of 1996 against my team, Ajax. Juventus won that final in the end on penalties.
The season after, now without the departed Ravanelli, Juventus again were in our way, this time in the semi finals.

In Netherlands, we use the German word Angstgegner, or 'the opponent you're always afraid of' - those handful of teams that are always the roadblock where it ends. You try left, right, even bass ackwards but they are the type of opponent you just can't defeat. And for Ajax, Juventus is such a team. And in 1996, it was because of Ravanelli.

Great term! The first three I thought of was Mo Salah and Danny Welbeck in a Man United context and Patrick Mortensen from AGF/Aarhus in a Brøndby context. Ironically, two of the three were youth players in the club, they've now come back to haunt.
