Understanding Charlton Athletic: African Connection, GenZ, FootballCo and Southeast London

Kingsley Delle was the latest in a group of call-ups with African connections

When the Charlton fans return to 'The Valley' to watch their home side this season, they will instantly notice a difference in the first team squad. The roster still has the familiar backbone of English-developed players, but mixed through it is something the club is increasingly leaning into: the African connection that runs deep through Southeast London.

Fans will see players with mixed races, mixed backgrounds, and mixed technical abilities. Players that look just like them, players that look just like the youth they see up and down the streets of Southeast London, dribbling footballs and mixing in five-a-sides.

To understand why Charlton is leaning into this identity, you have to understand the city itself. Roughly 14% of London’s population has African heritage, representing well over a million people across the capital. In boroughs across South and East London, that percentage climbs even higher. Charlton’s home sits in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, right in the middle of that trend. About 21% of residents identify as Black, with African communities forming a large share of that population.

Walk through areas like Charlton, nearby Woolwich, or Greenwich, and you’ll hear accents and languages from Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, and Senegal mixed with London street slang. Making it one of the most diverse football pools in the country to find talent. And until recently, many clubs weren’t tapping into it. Crystal Palace found a strong system with camps in South London looking at English talent, Arsenal and Spurs cover the Northern part of the City, while Chelsea and Fulham fight in the West.

Charlton found not only the area they can cover that is untapped, but also a demographic that will help grow and change the football at both a technical level and a viewership level in the city.

In 2023, Charlton was purchased by Global Football Partners, a company that distributes ownership to five parties evenly, a club not owned by one man or family. In 2025, Charlton became partners with Footballco, one of the largest companies in the world that is expanding the game of football worldwide.

A brief comment from that partnership read "The London club has been selected to partner with Footballco because of the Addicks’ position as the leading social purpose football organisation in the UK.

The Charlton Athletic Community Trust is the biggest UK club charity; it has long been the foremost EDI [equality, diversity and inclusion] club in the country, and is ranked sixth in the English Football League for sustainability. Its Academy – which draws its players from the streets of South London – ranks eighth in England, whilst Charlton Athletic Women’s Football Club currently stands top of the second tier.

Footballco - which has a monthly worldwide audience of 800 million fans - is home to a range of global, local and community football content brands, including GOAL, MUNDIAL, INDIVISA and Front Three."

Charlton’s chairman has spoken openly in recent years about the club’s desire to build stronger connections with African heritage communities across London.
The strategy is straightforward: create satellite development camps across the capital, mostly in South and East London, aimed at young players from African diaspora communities who may otherwise slip through the traditional academy recruitment net. Making the football and the camps affordable, located in places with public transit, and open to all.

Charlton has always prided itself on youth development and has invested more money into that area in recent years. The board knows trying to compete with the same talent pool as the Premier League clubs will fail, so they had to be smart and find a new pool to swim in. While Charlton cannot compete financially with those clubs, they have the location those clubs desire for this talent.

Manager Matteo Moretti is fully on board. Moretti has built his reputation around a technical, possession-driven approach, but he’s also a big admirer of the creativity and unpredictability that African players have brought to world football. As he explained in preseason interviews:

“African players bring something special to the game. There’s flair, improvisation, and confidence on the ball. If you combine that with structure and technical discipline, you can create something very exciting.”

Moretti’s vision is to blend structured European tactics with expressive attacking play. And the current squad already hints at that balance.

Look through the 2026/27 roster and the connection becomes clear. Several players have direct African nationality, while others represent the African diaspora born and raised in England. Young midfielder Musa Touré (Senegal) and Kingsley Delle (Senegal) arrive from the academy pipeline as two of the club’s most exciting prospects. Both players were standout performers in youth competitions and have already caught Moretti’s attention during preseason training.

Up front, the squad includes players with strong African heritage ties:
Isaac Olaofe (England/Ghana), Micah Mbick (England/Cameroon) and Daniel Kanu (England/Sierra Leone)

These players grew up in London’s football culture with cage football, five-a-side leagues, and street tournaments. Environments where flair and improvisation develop naturally, where players freely express themselves with their ability on the ball.

Midfield prospect Ibrahim Fullah (England/Sierra Leone) is another example of the club’s approach: a London-born player whose family roots connect directly to West Africa.
And then there’s Sidy Kebe, an 18-year-old striker from Senegal who represents the next generation of the club’s scouting vision.

Charlton's approach is aggressive, sometimes controversial, and very unique in the talent they are searching for. If pulled off correctly, Charlton can become the club of London; diverse, attractive, and unique in every way.

I lived in Chiswick (West-London), the closest club to me were QPR (nicknamed The R's), which was my fav club: because of the unique name, the jerseys (white and royal blue, horizontal - which also happen to be the colours of the city of Kraków, Poland) and their fanzine entitled A KIQ UP THE R's. In my time, QPR were just promoted from L2 to the Championship, while Charlton were in the Premier League, so the two never met during my stay unfortunately.

I have a soft spot for QPR, the story is really interesting, how they were relegated in the mid 2010's, losing major profits and almost going into financial reset. They seem to have settled down and are building back, establishing themselves as a regular Championship side. Loftus Road is also one of the 'old school' stadiums left in London.

Not to age you, but that must have been in the late 90's/early 2000's, correct? Charlton went back down in 05 or '06, and I believe QPR made it back to the Championship around that same time before being promoted again and then hit with financial troubles.

LB and an attacking mid are needed. Update on that coming. I did try the swap option but for the players that I was wanting to move, clubs were not interested in a swap deal.

Summer Transfer Window is Closed: Did Charlton do enough?


Matteo Moretti came to London with big headlines after his time in Fiorentina. Now, the Italian has completed his first-ever transfer window at a club and has his own picked players to work with. Moretti has previously stressed the importance of using a club's academy, and so far, the manager is making good on those statements, promoting three players to the first team squad that have already seen minutes in the first month of the season.

Charlton hit the window late, bringing in three players in the final week of August, two with the potential to become impactful starters in a squad that some pundits believe might flirt with the playoffs this season.

The headline attacking signing is Jamie Donley from Tottenham Hotspur for £4.5 million. At 21, Donley fits perfectly into Moretti’s technical, possession-oriented system. Comfortable between the lines and capable of drifting wide or dropping deeper to link play, he gives Charlton something they lacked last year: creativity in tight spaces.

Most sources expect Donley to start immediately in the No.10 role ahead of Sonny Carey and Harvey Knibbs.

On the defensive side, the signing of Teden Mengi from Luton Town for £4.3 million could end up being the most important move of the summer. Mengi arrives with Championship experience and the athletic profile modern managers crave, with pace, recovery speed, and comfort playing out from the back.

He’s widely expected to partner with Amari'i Bell in the heart of defense, giving Charlton a much more physical and mobile center-back pairing.

Meanwhile, Nigerian left-back Emmanuel Mitchell arrives from LASK as a backup option at left-back. At 20, he likely rotates with Josh Edwards early but could become a longer-term solution on the left side.

With the window closed and the first few games completed, pundits are starting to have their say on Charlton's expectations in 2026/2027.

On the Outside the 20 podcast, host Ali Maxwell, recently highlighted Charlton as a “quiet riser” in the division: “Charlton might be one of the more interesting teams this year. Donley is a really smart signing, and Mengi is probably better than most people realize. If Moretti gets them playing the way he wants, they could be a top-half surprise.”

Similarly, analysts on the Second Tier Podcast noted that Charlton’s recruitment looks far more coherent than some clubs' spending bigger money but still falling short this season. “They’ve clearly targeted players who fit a style rather than just names. Donley in that system could be really fun to watch. They still lack the experience and a top goal scorer to break into the top half of the table."
