LOUISVILLE — It wasn't the result that the NWSL's top team, Racing Louisville FC, wanted as they returned to the pitch on a 5-game winning streak. The 4th place Washington Spirit made the trip to Louisville for a Sunday afternoon game & dominated the defending champions the entire game.

"We had some rust on us out there. We underestimated them & they exposed us every second of the game." Racing's Savannah DeMelo told DS.net following today's loss.

For Racing, a couple of new faces got involved in scoring, as Anouk Denton scored her first goal this season midway through the first half.

Joining her on the scoresheet is newly acquired Elyse Bennett, who subbed in to start the second half, & scored her first goal of the season at the 48' mark.

For the Spirit, the second half belonged to Kaja Novak, who found the net twice & secured Washington's lead over the NWSL's top team.

Today was only Louisville's second loss this season, & still remain firmly planted at the top of table with 40 points. Gotham FC trail behind in 2nd with 34.

Racing Louisville will return to action against Bay FC, who defeated Louisville in the season-opener with a late goal from Lilli Purtscheller, on August 31st.

Lily Yohannes left the match just as Racing Louisville was taking advantage of the 11-10 mismatch against Bay FC.

LOUISVILLE — What once felt like a big 2-0 lead heading into the half quickly turned into another disaster as Racing Louisville fumbled the lead & a Stina Blackstenius goal at the 90th minute forced the draw.

Today's match against Bay FC was nothing short of physical. Bay FC saw Eva Holst ejected with a red card as early as 2 minutes into the contest. Racing took advantage of the 11 to 10 mismatch, until Lily Yohannes received red just 20 minutes & evened the playing field to 10 vs 10.

The match continued with 4 more yellow cards. 2 for Racing & 2 for Bay FC.

"They wanted to play physical football & our girls didn't back down." Filipa Patão said to DS.net after the match. "We didn't get the result we wanted but I'm proud of the fight we put up."

Ella Palis was the star for Racing tonight as scored her 9th & 10th goal on the season, propelling her to #3 in the NWSL top scorers.

Bay FC would eventually rally back from an 0-2 deficit, & delivered a heart breaking goal at the 90th minute of the match as Blackstenius found the net for an equalizer.

Racing FC will look to pick up their first victory since the league-wide pause as the club returns to the pitch on September 7 in Chicago against the Stars.
