Broncos Exploit Suspect Beavs Offense, Keep Title Hopes Alive
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: November 20th, 2027

We've been preaching doom and gloom for weeks now, and it finally arrived. In the biggest game of the year—taking the playoff and championship game implications into account—Kallen Gutridge and AJ Maddox were pissing down their legs and when the dust settled on The Blue, the Boise State Broncos bullied the Beavers into a 30-15 defeat to keep Boise State's Pac-12 Championship hopes alive.

George Tejeda put the Broncos on the board on their opening drive, finding Jordan Malau'ulu on an out route, stiff-arming Kodi DeCambra, then accelerating up the sideline for the 50-yard touchdown to instantly put the Beavers behind the eight-ball. Despite forcing consecutive three-and-outs on the next two Broncos drives, their own offense was able to muster a lone first down as the 1st quarter ended 7-0 and Coach Jonathan Smith had seen enough from Kallen Gutridge, who exited the game 2/9 for 18 yards.

AJ Maddox did not fare any better. Maddox went 2/7 in the 2nd quarter and while the offense was finally able to build a sustainable drive, it ended with a anti-climatic missed field goal from Logan McCreery. For most of the first half, it was all on the back of Salahadin Allah, who churned out 72 yards alone. To make matters worse, DE Kelze Howard snagged an interception on a brilliant zone blitz call from Coach Leon, only for Maddox & Co. to promptly go three-and-out to squander the turnover at midfield.

A 36-yard reception to reserve WR Ja'Bree Bickham, his only reception in the contest, moved the Boise State Broncos within field-goal range for Rico Dogg to push the lead to 10-0 going into the half. The numbers painted a telling story. Boise State outgained the Beavers offensively 178-106 with the Beaver's QBs going 4/16 for 34 yards combined, while Tejeda was 11/19 for 174 yards. Despite the lopsided offensive numbers, the Broncos had only scored 10 points as the Beavers' Dam stiffened when necessary, doing everything they could to keep the game close enough for a late explosion by their own offense.

It would never come in time. Tejeda opened the 2nd half with a crisp 10-play drive before finding Jordan Malau'ulu for the duo's second touchdown and with the lead at 17-0, it felt like the Beavers were dead in the water. A quick three-and-out by Oregon State later in the 3rd allowed the Broncos to take over at midfield and while they didn't generate a first down, it was close enough for Dogg to smash in a 58-yard field goal to stretch the lead.

Then the Beavers got desperate, making the final look worse than the stats showed. Consecutive failed 4th-down conversion attempts by the Beavers, both incomplete passes by AJ Maddox, allowed the Broncos to take over on the 33 and 43 respectively. A 10-yard touchdown to Jordan Malau'ulu—his third of the game mirroring the performance he had against Oregon State while with Fresno State last year—was followed by another long field-goal, this one 54 yards, after a Luke Levengood sack pushed the Broncos back.

Facing a 30-0 deficit, the Beavers finally showed signs of life, but it was simply too little, too late. AJ Maddox dove into the end zone from one yard out to ruin the shutout bid by the Broncos and an explosive 87-yard punt return by Zachary Card made the final look respectable.

At the end of the day, the Boise State Broncos only accumulated 298 total yards (274 passing, 24 rushing), but possessed the ball for 38 of the 60 total minutes of the contest, showing they were clearly in control for the majority of the contest. Despite the 30 points allowed, the Beavers' defense was able to collect one interception, a sack, and 20 tackles for loss, doing everything they could to keep the game within striking distance.

Let's take it to the post-game with Armando Leon as he discusses what's next for the Beavers, the impact Jordan Malau'ulu had, and more.

•••

Question One - Sean Muller (The Arbiter): "Coach Leon, your defense was on the field in perilous situations on multiple occasions in this contest due to your offense's ineptitude. How hard is it to play at a high level, especially with the speed-centric scheme you employ, when you're on the field for over 60% of the TOP and defending short fields?"

Armando Leon: "When the guys barely have time to catch their breath, or even grab a drink, before they're being ushered back out onto the field it can discourage you. We did a great job early on of keeping our focus and intensity, even after the 50-yard catch-and-run by Jordan Malau'ulu to open the game. We were rallying to the ball, hitting receivers to disrupt passing lanes, and even nabbed an interception when Kelze dropped into zone from his edge position. But you saw that as the game wore on, we wore down. Critics will ask if that's a conditioning issue; it's not. You don't prepare to spend nearly 40-minutes on the field fighting. I'm proud of the effort we put in, score aside, especially when you factor in the final 10 points were a direct result of being put in poor field position."

Question Two - Denise Miller (Idaho Statesman) "Two matchups with Jordan Malau'ulu now, Coach, one here and one in Fresno State, and he has 11 receptions for 185 yards and six touchdowns. What is it about your defense that struggles to cover a guy like Malau'ulu, who has size and speed, with the ability to line up at a variety of positions out wide?"

Armando Leon: "No slight to Jordan, he's a great receiver and presents a lot of challenges to a defense as I noted earlier this week with Ricky, but the bigger issue was we weren't getting home. Boise State's offensive line played a great game and kept a clean pocket for Tejeda for most of the game, even when we broke through and got some hits on Tejeda he still made some big-time throws. We play man coverage almost exclusively, which works when you're getting home on the QB. When you aren't though, this is what happens. Good receivers look great when they've got time to freelance."

Question Three - Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "With the loss, the Beavers are likely to tumble in the standings. How disappointing is it for you and the defense to have a season where you've dominated statistically, be undone when you still put forth a solid effort amidst a feeble attempt by your own offense?"

Armando Leon: "Playoffs in year 2 would have been nice, but depending on how far we fall, could still be a possibility. We've got to take care of business next week against Washington State on Senior Night to clinch a spot in Vegas, and from there we'll see where we stand. The season isn't over, we just hit a speed bump."

•••

We've been saying this could happen all season, since AJ Maddox struggled against Portland State. We persevered for an entire season behind inept—a harsh, but true assessment—offense until we simply needed more than they could give.

The reality is, we're likely going to tumble. How far remains to be seen. But despite that, the playoffs could still be attainable, and it starts with a win against Washington State next week. If we beat the Cougars, we're still in the conference championship. We win that, and we've got an outside shot at still making the College Football Playoff.

But one thing is for sure, the margin of error is gone now.

And right now, all eyes are on Coach Smith and Coach Dahlen. The offense needs to do more, period.

2027 Week Thirteen Preview - Washington State (7-4) @ #23 Oregon State (9-2)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: November 26th, 2027

After all the highs and lows of this season, it all comes down to this. The winner between 23rd-ranked Oregon State and the Washington Cougars, riding a five-game win streak, punches their ticket to the Pac-12 Conference Championship in Las Vegas. If Oregon State loses, they are officially eliminated. Even with a loss, the Cougars would still have an outside shot, needing a Broncos loss to Colorado State to back their way into the championship game.

In his return to Oregon State, with Coach Leon at DC, Head Coach Jonathan Smith is 5-0 following a loss and if we want to turn this season from pretty good, into a program-defining season, we'll need him to keep that streak alive.

On the other side of the team breakdown, we'll get Coach Leon's thoughts on the disappointing showing against Boise State as well as what his defense can do to keep the season rolling into Vegas in "Leon's Lowdown."

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "Coach, all around rough showing on The Blue. How're the boys' spirits going into a must-win on Senior Night against Washington State, a team that stunned you guys last season, with the championship hopes on the line against one of the hottest teams in the conference?"

AL: "I can only speak to my unit, Ricky, but we're locked in and ready to go. Last year we intercepted Gabarri Johnson three times, despite the loss, and I haven't seen anything on tape that suggests we won't be able to have the same success. That being said, a late touchdown run was the killer and that was entirely on us. But we're more athletic and more disciplined this year, compared to last year. I'm very confident that my defense is going to prove they're worthy of their #1 overall ranking. Washington State is on a heater of late, but streaks like that don't last forever. It's time to end it."

RM: "We all knew the tumble was coming, but do you think dropping 11 spots—from #12 to #23—was warranted? It's not like Boise State was a slouch. Additionally, do you think there is still a shot at making the playoff with the late loss?"

AL: "11 spots when losing a conference game to an 8-2 program is a bit much if you ask me, but then again, we lost. If we don't like it, we should have taken care of business. As far as the playoff goes, we're taking it one game at a time. Right now, it's Washington State. If that goes well, then it's the Championship Game in Vegas. After that, we can start thinking about the Playoffs. But if we get caught up in that nonsense now, we're asking to get lined up by the Cougars and be in a mid-December bowl game for our efforts."

RM: "Last one, Coach. I know you've shied away from criticizing the offense in the past, but it seemed like the frustration boiled over a bit after the loss last week. But the facts are facts. Over the last six weeks, the Beavers scoring output has gradually declined, going from 54 points against Texas State to a meager 15 in Boise. What is the confidence level that the offense can score enough points for the Beavers to get the win this week?"

AL: "My comments last week were more about defending my unit, than condemning the offensive effort. End of the day, if we only allow 14 points we win that game. It was more out of frustration that the effort my guys gave was being dismissed as a "fraud check." We know the offense has been struggling lately; we need to do our part to make it easier on them. Turnovers, field position, anything we can. When you're the better unit, you have to step up.

•••

This is it, do or die. And I can't say that the offense is very inspiring. We're trending in the wrong direction and I don't see the solution. Kallen Gutridge, or AJ Maddox, they've both floundered to this point. But is the moment too big to turn to James Rowe, who has not played since last season?

I'll give Coach Smith a smidge of credit, he was quick to pull Gutridge last week knowing the need for SOMETHING. Unfortunately, Maddox gave us little until the end. The team hasn't announced who will be starting this week, but AJ Maddox did nothing to prove he deserved the opportunity.

The other problem? It's not like Washington State isn't on fire offensively now. I have all the faith in Coach Leon's defense, but as we saw on The Blue. If you don't have backup, doesn't matter how good you perform defensively, you're still going to lose.

I'm going to bank on the defense or special teams making an impact play that flips this game on its head and sends the seniors out with a win.

21 Washington State, 24 Oregon State. Taking the Dam to Vegas.

Hopefully.

Last year we intercepted Gabarri Johnson three times, despite the loss,

Subtly taking shots at the offense. Coach better lock it in and stop calling out the O when his defense is giving up late scores.

He always doubles back and says if they hadn't given up the points, it wouldn't matter that the offense didn't score.

Vegas, Here We Come!
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: November 27th, 2027

With a resounding 31-7 victory on Senior Night, the Oregon State Beavers have officially punched their ticket to Viva Las Vegas, baby!

The Beavers' defense bent, but refused to break outside of a 23-yard touchdown to James Thrash, who caught the tipped ball from CB Kodi DeCambra for the only points on the afternoon for the Cougars. On four other occasions, the Washington State Cougars drove within striking distance, but a pair of missed field goals in the first half gave way to an even greater disaster in the second, as the clock began to wind down on the Cougars' title hopes.

Down 13-7 and looking to take their first lead of the game, Gabarri Johnson tried to hit Leo Pualasi on a Smash route up the seam. Exodus Ayers saw it all the way, undercut the throw, then turned into a punt returner with an electric 101-yard return to flip the script in a heartbeat. Within the span of 20 seconds, the Cougars went from threatening to take the lead, to a two-score deficit after the Beavers converted the two-point conversion.

The Cougars tried to answer, but another shot to the end zone was instead snagged, this time by Kodi DeCambra, ending the final scoring threat on the afternoon for the Cougars. Two failed 4th-down attempts led to the final 10 points for the Beavers, turning a once respectable 21-7 contest into a 31-7 blowout by the final whistle.

AJ Maddox, who got the start over Kallen Gutridge, was solid, if unspectacular, tossing his only touchdown pass in the 1st quarter to put the Beavers up early while avoiding making any crucial mistakes to give the Cougars an advantage.

Coach Leon praised his defense's never-quit attitude, Exodus Ayers' playmaking ability, and the steady presence of AJ Maddox in the post-game press conference.

Question One - Olivia LeRusso (Oregonlive): "Coach Leon, your defense gave up some big plays through the air on occasion and didn't have the same intense pressure on the QB that we're used to seeing from this club, but still held the Cougars to only 7 points. How do you keep this team locked in when the field shrinks to keep the opposing offense out of the end zone?"

Armando Leon: "Our guys just don't quit, period. Their offensive line did a great job holding up in pass protection, giving Gabarri Johnson a clean pocket most of the day, but they just stayed locked in. Five red-zone trips and only one touchdown? That tells the story of a defense that fought to the last yard. And before we take the next question, round of applause for Exodus. Play of the game right there, hands down. Even if he doesn't give up a touchdown, a field goal in that spot would have put the pressure on our own offense. Instead, he sees the ball, makes a play, and turns defense into offense and that put the Cougars in desperation mode. He won this game with that play, in my mind."

Question Two - Chip Swarley (CW Sports): "Coach, I know it's not your unit, but how much does a gutsy performance like the one from AJ Maddox today inspire your unit to pick him up and get the W?"

Armando Leon: "AJ did exactly what we needed him to do, keep the chains moving and put some pressure on the Wazzou team. We don't need John Mateer back there slinging the rock, we just need ball control and pace. He and Salahadin Allah did that today and it gave us the autonomy to not play scared, thinking one touchdown would be the difference."

Question Three - Sean Cypress (The Daily Evergreen): "There is a real possibility you could face this team again in two weeks, depending on the result of the Boise State and Colorado State game this afternoon. If you had the choice, would you rather have an opportunity at revenge against Boise State, or double up on the Cougars?"

Armando Leon: "We don't care who's across from us, Sean, we're going to do what we do. But, I would be remiss if I didn't say: I'm sure the boys would love to spin the block on the Broncos."

The Beavers ain't the only ones who want to get their lick back, I'm sure all of Beaver Nation is shouting "WE WANT BOISE" at home, in their car, or at the watch party in Corvallis. Boise State beat us down and left us humiliated. It wouldn't feel right hosting a Pac-12 Championship without going through them.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, this is exactly the kind of performance we needed from AJ Maddox and the offense. They didn't light the world on fire, but they killed clock, moved the chains, and put enough points on the board to put the Washington State offense in desperation mode. And then Coach Leon's unit took over the game.

I don't care who's on the docket, it's time to take Vegas by storm! Hoover ain't going to be the only dam in Nevada here soon!

2027 Week Pac-12 Conference Championship Preview - #21 Oregon State (10-2) vs Boise State Broncos (10-2)
Ricky McKinley // Dam DailyPublished: December 9th, 2027

I don't think this game needs any introduction, Beaver Nation. Boise State was one of only two teams to conquer the Dam this season, and it's time to exact revenge.

After the stats graphic, we'll get right to the "Leon's Lowdown" to see how Coach Mando feels going into a rematch at a neutral site and just how the heck he's going to stop Jordan Malau'ulu.

Leon's Lowdown

RM: "No grand buildup here, Coach. Beaver Nation is locked in. First things first, how the heck are you going to keep Jordan Malau'ulu from making it 3/3 against your defense?"

AL: "We've tried running single and double coverage on him in spurts, so short of leaving a safety over the top every play, I'm not sure what else to do. Jordan is what everyone keeps talking about, but I'm not worried about that. Even if he gets his yardag-wise, if we keep him out of the end zone it's still a win for us. And that starts with pressure up front. We only sacked George Tejeda twice two weeks ago; that has to change if we're going to get a win."

RM: "Oregon State enters the game ranked 21st, meaning that even with a conference championship, you'll need some help to get into the Playoff. If Appalachian State loses, it could open the door for the Beavers to sneak in. That game kicks off five hours before the Beavers will take the field; is knowing the result of that game beforehand going to change the way you play?"

AL: "We've already told the team; the day of the game there's no phones once we get to the facility. We aren't checking scores, watching the Jumbotron, nothing. We're locked in for this game. Conference championship first, then we worry about the rest later."

RM: "Switching gears on the final question, Coach. How do you keep your team focused despite being in Sin City?"

AL: "We keep them busy early and promise the fun later. With the game on a Friday, we're getting into Vegas Wednesday night. We'll be busy with final walkthroughs all day on Thursday, then the game Friday. But Coach Smith worked with leadership so that our plane back to Corvallis doesn't depart until Sunday morning. I don't think I need to spell out the rest, Ricky."

Welp, this is it. Beaver Nation asked for it, and we got it. Oregon State vs Boise State with a conference championship on the line. Was last year's victory in the "Guarantee Game" just a fluke, fueled by Coach Leon's confidence, or are we going to get this lick back and hoist a second consecutive Pac-12 Championship?

I may be biased, but that trophy is ours.

Oregon State 21, Boise State 20.
