Catching up on Fiorentina's European Season
Viola travels to Poland for the first leg of the knockout round
February 16, 2026 |
Diego OttavianoFlorence, Italy - Fiorentina’s UEFA Conference League journey this season has been a basket of mixed results, with moments of celebration and others that asked real questions of the squad. It began in the qualifying rounds, where the Viola showed their attacking edge against Polissya Zhytomyr. A convincing 3–0 away performance set the tone, before a more open 3–2 win at home confirmed progression to the group stage.
The league stage was where Fiorentina’s campaign truly took shape. There were strong, controlled victories against Sigma Olomouc (2–0), SK Rapid Wien (3–0), and Dynamo Kyiv (2–1), matches where the Viola dictated tempo and controlled the script. At the same time, narrow defeats followed against Mainz 05, AEK Athens, and FC Lausanne-Sport, each by a single goal, highlighting how small the margins have been in this competition.
Now the knockout phase arrives, and with it a different kind of pressure. Fiorentina face Jagiellonia Białystok, knowing their European run has not been perfect, but it has been solid and competitive. With relegation in the league possible, a UEFA Conference trophy is the only silverware left to win. Surviving the relegation battle and winning a European trophy might be enough to satisfy the fans and forget about this woeful campaign.

Gotta consider that two dropped points against Como. Hopefully you find some joy against Jagiellonia in Europe.

He is going to be the face of the team (if I’m not sacked this summer).
For sure. First half was a complete show for me. Then Como turned it on and I was lucky to get a point.
Conference league should be easier games and we are one of the favorites left. We have a good shot to win that.

Albert Gudmundsson's return opens more chances for Moretti to attack the shape
The Good, The Bad, and The Rest from Poland
By Luca Santori, Forza Italian Correspondent
February 21, 2026
Florence, Italy - Two matches into his Fiorentina tenure, Matteo Moretti has already had a full taste of what it means to live inside the Viola storm. A two-goal lead lost, a stoppage-time winner taken away, and now hope arriving at the same time as bad news. This is Fiorentina, and calm rarely lasts long.
The Good
The welcome news is the return of Albert Gudmundsson, who has been cleared to play and will be available after the upcoming Serie A match against Pisa. His return means Gudmundsson (six goals, four assists in 27 appearances) should be ready for the second leg against Jagiellonia Białystok at the Artemio Franchi.
Gudmundsson’s availability allows Moretti to return to his preferred 4-3-3, narrow at the front and often resembling a 4-3-1-2. At the heart of it is Moise Kean, who has adapted quickly to the new coach’s ideas, flanked by Gudmundsson and an impressive Christian Kouamé. Kean and Kouamé in particular showed how dangerous Fiorentina can be on the counter, creating chances even without long spells of possession — a balance this side has sometimes lacked.
The Bad
The biggest blow comes from the right side. Brazilian fullback Dodô, one of the standout performers under Moretti with three assists in two matches, suffered a broken big toe in Poland. He is expected to be out for three months, effectively ending his season.

There is some cover. Tariq Lamptey is close to returning and should resume training next week, though he offers a different profile — strong going forward, less reliable defensively. Against Pisa, Moretti may again turn to Fabiano Parisi on the right, a temporary but pragmatic solution.
The Rest
The 3–3 draw may feel like a missed chance, but Moretti saw it differently. “We came here not wanting to lose, and we achieved that,” he said. “Now we finish the tie at home, where I am confident.”
Before Europe resumes, however, Fiorentina’s focus must return to Serie A. Pisa visits Florence, sitting at the bottom of the table, and while three points are expected, they are also essential. A win would move Fiorentina to within a single point of safety.
