I like to add the pressure. Winning by less than 14 here is a bad look.

FINISHING STRONG
USF outscores Charlotte 21-3 in the second half to improve to 9-0

Saturday October 28, 2028 | 4:00 PM | Jerry Richardson Stadium | Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte, North Carolina - For a half, Charlotte had No. 12 South Florida uncomfortable, stressed, and searching for answers.
Then halftime arrived, and so did the adjustments.
Behind defensive coordinator Tony White’s second-half tweaks and a dominant rushing performance from Connor Suggs, USF turned a tight, tense matchup into a convincing 42–20 road win Saturday afternoon at Jerry Richardson Stadium, outscoring the 49ers 21–3 after the break to improve to 9–0 on the season.
Charlotte entered the game intent on testing USF through the air, and early on, it worked.
Quarterback Tyler Chambers carved up the Bulls’ secondary in the first half, repeatedly finding Vee-Jay Ellis and John Okine on vertical routes and intermediate throws. Ellis scored on a short touchdown pass late in the first quarter, and Okine followed with a back-breaking 68-yard strike midway through the second, keeping the 49ers right on USF’s heels.
Chambers finished the day with 304 passing yards and two touchdowns, but most of the damage came before halftime. At the break, USF held just a narrow 21–17 lead, having been forced to trade punches rather than dictate the game.
Everything changed after halftime.
USF came out with a more aggressive coverage plan, tighter underneath zones, and consistent pressure up front. Chambers suddenly had less space to operate, and Charlotte struggled to sustain drives. The 49ers’ only second-half points came on a third-quarter field goal, and from there, momentum swung decisively.
The turning point came early in the fourth quarter.
With USF clinging to a 21–20 lead, Locklan Hewlett drove the Bulls deep into Charlotte territory. On a potential scoring throw in the end zone, Hewlett’s pass was tipped at the line and intercepted, a gut-punch moment that could have flipped the game’s tone.
Instead, the defense answered immediately.
USF forced a quick three-and-out, flipped the field, and moments later Connor Suggs powered in from three yards out to make it 28–20. The sequence, interception, stop, touchdown, drained the life out of the stadium and fully swung control to the Bulls.
Once USF had breathing room, Suggs took over.
The junior back gashed Charlotte repeatedly, finishing with 184 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries. His final score, a 31-yard burst late in the fourth quarter, was the exclamation point on a performance that showcased USF’s physical edge.
Hewlett was nearly flawless despite the lone interception, completing 16 of 18 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns, including a 46-yard strike to Jordyn Bridgewater that pushed the lead to 35–20. Bridgewater finished with 168 receiving yards, consistently stretching the field once Charlotte was forced to commit extra bodies to the run.
The numbers tell the story of the second half dominance: USF averaged 11.3 yards per play, rushed for 249 yards, and allowed just 26 rushing yards all game. After being tested early, the Bulls leaned on their defense, ground game, and explosive playmaking, a formula that has defined their undefeated run.
Charlotte proved it could compete through the air, especially early, but once USF adjusted, the gap in physicality and depth became impossible to overcome.
For South Florida, it was another reminder that even when things aren’t clean early, this team knows how to finish.
And as the calendar turns toward November, that ability may matter more than anything else.

USF POSTGAME REPORT
USF 42 – Charlotte 20

Offense
–USF paired explosive efficiency with a punishing second-half ground attack, pulling away from Charlotte late for a 42–20 road victory at Jerry Richardson Stadium.
–Quarterback Locklan Hewlett was nearly flawless, finishing 16-of-18 for 226 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception while guiding the Bulls to 21 second-half points.
–With his performance, Hewlett broke the USF career passing yards record, surpassing Marquel Blackwell’s long-standing mark of 9,108 yards (1999–2002). Hewlett now sits at 9,276 yards while still having a full year of eligibility remaining.
–Despite the record-setting day, Hewlett’s lone mistake proved pivotal. Early in the fourth quarter, a tipped pass in the end zone was intercepted, stalling a drive that could have pushed USF ahead by two scores. However, the defense immediately answered, forcing a quick three-and-out that flipped momentum back to the Bulls. Moments later, Connor Suggs powered in from three yards out to make it 28–20, the play that finally broke Charlotte’s resistance.
–Suggs spearheaded the offensive shift, rushing for 184 yards and three touchdowns on just 15 carries, consistently wearing down a Charlotte defense that had little answer after halftime.
–“We want to get back to being bullies,” Head Coach DJ Porter said. “That starts with running the football, setting a tone, and letting Connor earn the right to carry it. He did that today.”
–Jordyn Bridgewater delivered the dagger through the air, hauling in a 46-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter before Suggs closed the door with a 31-yard scoring run.
Defense
–USF’s defense bent early but dominated late, holding Charlotte to just three second-half points after allowing 17 before halftime.
–Charlotte quarterback Tyler Chambers found success through the air early, finishing with 304 passing yards and two touchdowns, but pressure and tighter coverage shut down the rhythm after halftime.
–The Bulls consistently collapsed the pocket in the second half, racking up sacks and negative plays that prevented Charlotte from sustaining drives.
–Jathan Hatch led the charge with eight tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks, while Jermaine Dalias, Ira Singleton, and Kevin Wynn added relentless pressure.
–Cameron Keys delivered a key interception, returning it 16 yards to help flip field position during a critical stretch of the game.
–“What I loved was the response,” Defensive Coordinator Tony White said. “Nobody hung their head. Nobody packed it in. The guys believed in the adjustments and trusted each other, and it showed.”
Special Teams
–Kicker Dom Bragg was perfect on the day, converting all six extra-point attempts in a clean performance.
–USF’s return units provided steady field position, highlighted by Ethan York’s 19-yard punt return and solid kickoff coverage throughout the afternoon.
Quotables
“Records are cool, but wins matter more. I’m proud of Locklan, but I’m prouder of how we finished,” – DJ Porter
“The guys believed in the plan. Once we tightened things up, it felt like the game tilted our way,” – Tony White
“That run game in the second half was us making a statement,” – Connor Suggs
“It means a lot to pass a name like that, but we’ve still got more to do,” – Locklan Hewlett
News
–USF improved to 9–0 on the season and remained unbeaten in American Conference play.
–Locklan Hewlett became the all-time leading passer in program history, surpassing Marquel Blackwell’s record that had stood for more than two decades.
Injury Notes
–USF exited the game without any significant new injuries, despite a physical contest in the trenches.
Next Up
–USF returns home next week to host Rice (8-1|5-0) in a big American Conference showdown that will play a significant role in the conference championship game.
