JAYHAWKS NEWS AND NOTES

Jayhawks take big hit to secondary with Jalen Todd and Nico Brewer injuries

The Kansas Jayhawks' recent victory over Washington State was overshadowed by significant injuries to key defensive players, starting cornerback Jalen Todd and starting safety Nico Brewer. Brewer has been diagnosed with a groin pull and is expected to be sidelined for approximately a month. Todd's situation is more severe; the senior has suffered a torn pectoral muscle, an injury likely ending his collegiate career as he has already utilized his redshirt year.

Todd has been a cornerstone of the Jayhawks' defense, amassing eight career interceptions, including two this season. Reflecting on his injury, Todd expressed, "It's heartbreaking to have my final season cut short. I've given my all to this team, and while this isn't how I envisioned it ending, I'm grateful for every moment on the field."

Brewer, known for his dynamic playmaking abilities, notably returned a fumble for a touchdown against Washington State. Addressing his injury, Brewer stated, "I'll be working hard to get back as soon as possible. Watching from the sidelines is tough, but I have full confidence in my teammates to step up."

Head Coach Jordan McAlary acknowledged the impact of these injuries, saying, "Losing Jalen and Nico is a significant blow to our defense. Their leadership and performance have been instrumental to our success. However, football is about resilience and depth. This is an opportunity for other players to rise to the occasion."

In response to these setbacks, the coaching staff has adjusted the defensive lineup. Jabari Koloamatangi will assume the starting cornerback position. Immanuel Jones and Thomas Schilling are also expected to see increased playing time.

At safety, junior Reynaldo Capers, who battled with Brewer for the starting spot during spring and fall camp, will step in.

The Jayhawks face a challenging period ahead as they adapt to these changes. The team's depth and resilience will be tested, but with a collective effort, they aim to maintain their competitive edge in the season

McAlary happy with result but not performance
Kansas head coach Jordan McAlary was pleased to come away with a win over Washington State, but he made it clear the performance left plenty of room for improvement.

“It’s always good to win, but we can’t ignore the things that need fixing,” McAlary said.

Chief among his frustrations were the two long touchdown passes the defense allowed, lapses he called “unacceptable” and “not up to our standard.”

On the offensive side, McAlary pointed to the pass protection as a growing concern — the Jayhawks have already surrendered 10 sacks this season.

“Some of that’s on the line, and some of it’s us holding the ball too long trying to hit the home run,” he said. “We’ve got to be smarter and more disciplined up front if we want to keep progressing.”

Marshall puts up big numbers as Kansas dominates Louisiana Tech
Saturday September 16, 2028
---
Ruston, Louisiana - The Kansas Jayhawks made sure there was no upset brewing in Ruston on Saturday, steamrolling Louisiana Tech 56-17 behind a monster performance from senior quarterback Isaiah Marshall.

Marshall accounted for six total touchdowns—three through the air and three more on the ground—powering a Kansas offense that racked up 599 yards and 30 first downs. The Jayhawks (3-0) wasted no time asserting control, racing out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and never looking back.

“We wanted to start fast and take the crowd out of it,” Marshall said after the game. “Once we got rolling, it was just about staying locked in and finishing.”

Marshall finished 18-of-35 passing for 373 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions, adding 40 yards and 3 rushing scores on the ground. Despite the turnovers, his big-play ability shined throughout the afternoon.

One of those explosive moments came midway through the second quarter, when Marshall hit wideout Morgan Cooke in stride for a 65-yard touchdown that blew the game wide open. Cooke led all receivers with 105 yards on just 3 catches, while Trey'Dez Green and Rashard Slay also hauled in touchdown passes.

The Jayhawks’ rushing attack was led by Harry Stewart III, who gashed the Bulldogs for 124 yards and a 32-yard touchdown run, averaging 8.2 yards per carry.

Defensively, Kansas dominated the line of scrimmage. The Jayhawks held Louisiana Tech to just 167 total yards, including only 70 passing yards on 8-of-25 attempts from quarterback Tobias Dural.

Kansas registered 5 sacks, led by Greyden Grimes’ 2.0 sacks and 2 tackles for loss, while Jabari Koloamatangi paced the team with 6 total tackles.

One of Tech's scores came on a 38-yard pick-six by Louisiana Tech’s Cyrus Reyes, one of three interceptions thrown by Marshall.

Despite the turnover margin (-3), Kansas smothered Louisiana Tech with overwhelming offensive efficiency, converting 11-of-14 third downs and scoring touchdowns on 5-of-7 red zone trips.

Kansas now turns its attention to conference play, with momentum and confidence building behind a senior-led squad that's eyeing a run at the College Football Playoff.

JAYHAWKS NEWS AND NOTES

McAlary Pleased with Blowout Win, But Eyes Improvements Ahead of TCU Clash

Following Kansas' 56-17 dismantling of Louisiana Tech, head coach Jordan McAlary was proud of his team’s dominant performance—but he made it clear the Jayhawks aren’t satisfied.

“It’s always good to come on the road, handle business early, and get out healthy. That’s a win in my book,” McAlary said. “We got a lot of guys involved and made explosive plays on both sides of the ball, and most importantly—we came out of it clean injury-wise.”

While Kansas flexed its offensive firepower, McAlary pointed to turnovers and pass protection as areas of concern heading into a key Big 12 matchup.

“Three turnovers is too many—plain and simple. We can’t give away possessions like that, especially with conference play heating up,” McAlary said. “I thought our line did a decent job, but Isaiah took a few more hits than I’d like. That’s something we’ve got to clean up fast.”

The Jayhawks allowed three sacks and several pressures despite Louisiana Tech rarely blitzing. McAlary acknowledged that protecting Marshall will be critical as Kansas prepares for a road trip to face a physical TCU team next weekend.

“We know what TCU brings—speed, aggression, and a whole lot of disruption on defense,” he said. “They’re always a handful. We’ll need to play cleaner football across the board if we want to walk out of there with a win.”

Despite those critiques, McAlary emphasized the team's growth and maturity in staying focused against a lower-tier opponent.

“This team is learning how to win the right way,” he said. “We didn’t let up, we played fast, and we stayed together. That’s what you want to see from a veteran group.”

Marshall added to Heisman watch list

After a scorching start to the season, Kansas quarterback Isaiah Marshall has officially landed on the Heisman Trophy watch list, adding another layer of excitement to the Jayhawks’ undefeated campaign.

The senior signal-caller has dazzled through three games, racking up over 1,000 total yards and 14 total touchdowns, including a 6-touchdown explosion in KU’s 56-17 win over Louisiana Tech. Marshall's dual-threat ability and leadership have been instrumental in Kansas’ rise to No. 3 in the nation.

“It’s an honor, but I’m just focused on winning games,” Marshall said. “If we keep stacking wins, all that other stuff will take care of itself.”

With a marquee Big 12 matchup looming against TCU, Marshall’s Heisman buzz is only growing—and so are Kansas’ championship hopes.
