The Jayhawks return seven starters on offense plus TE Trey'dez Green who started at TE for most of the second half of the season. Heimburger steps in at left tackle, a key position as the offense moves to a more pass focused attack this season. The key to the season will be Kansas' ability to replace last year's incredible production by Johnny Thompson Jr and Avery Muamba in the backfield. Expect Kansas to use a multitude of runningbacks until one steps up. Isaiah Marshall will also be a key part of the running game although the coaching staff would prefer to keep him from taking many hits. Brad Matlock is an above average backup but is not as dynamic as Marshall.

Bold = Returning Day One Starter

Defensively Kansas will have a mostly new secondary with returning starter Tripp shifting to strong safety from free safety. The linebacker group returns three starters as well as Russell who was essentially a starter with all the snaps he played. Look for Kansas to get four linebackers on the field as much as possible this season. Greydon Grimes leads the defensive line and he hopes to return to his 2026 form when he recorded 14.5 sacks before missing a big chunk of last season with injuries. The Jayhawks will need pressure on opposing QBs to ease the burden on their fresh faces in the secondary.

Not many changes on special teams, McAlary hopes to keep punting to a minimum once again, they punted just 24 times last season.

Marshall's big game propels Jayhawks to win in Hawaii
Saturday August 26, 2028
---
Honolulu, Hawaii - Kansas quarterback Isaiah Marshall led the charge with four total touchdowns as the Jayhawks cruised past Hawaii, 44-22, in a dominant road victory.

Marshall accounted for three rushing touchdowns and threw for another, overcoming two interceptions while passing for 326 yards. His 8-yard rushing score on the opening drive set the tone for a Kansas offense that racked up 470 total yards. Running back Harry Stewart III added balance with 100 yards on the ground and a late touchdown to seal the game.

Hawaii’s defense found brief success when Matthew Shereles returned a fumble for a 25-yard touchdown in the first quarter, briefly tying the game. But the Rainbow Warriors struggled to contain Kansas’ offense the rest of the way.

Kansas took firm control in the second quarter, with Marshall scoring twice more on the ground, and kicker Shaq Durham adding a field goal to push the lead to 31-7 by halftime. Durham remained perfect on the night, hitting all three of his field goal attempts and converting all five extra points.

Hawaii showed some life in the fourth quarter against some of the Jayhawks reserves, as Derek Boyd II broke free for a 19-yard touchdown run, followed by a 57-yard touchdown pass from Tyler DiNucci to Damon Brazill. A successful two-point conversion cut into the deficit, but it was too little, too late. Stewart’s late touchdown capped off the win for Kansas.

The Jayhawks’ defense was a force all night, recording five interceptions, including two from Jalen Todd. Hawaii’s quarterbacks struggled under the pressure, with DiNucci and Mason Bolen combining for five turnovers.

With the win, Kansas sets the tone with a strong start to their season, while Hawaii looks to regroup after an error-filled night.
