Love it when the running game is working. Hopefully it can be replicated against the Cyclones.

Lawrence, Kansas -
The Kansas Jayhawks continued their impressive season with a 42-24 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones, powered by a dominant ground attack and explosive plays in all three phases of the game.

Quarterback Isaiah Marshall made a triumphant return to the lineup, putting on a show for the Kansas faithful. Marshall rushed for a game-high 161 yards, including a dazzling 7-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and added 80 passing yards with a touchdown strike to Damien Keo. Marshall’s dual-threat performance kept the Cyclones' defense on their heels all game long.

Running back Johnny Thompson Jr. showcased his nose for the end zone, tallying three touchdowns on the ground while amassing 101 yards on 16 carries. Avery Muamba added 99 rushing yards, further solidifying Kansas' dominance in the run game, which racked up 361 total rushing yards.

Special teams provided a spark early in the second half when Morgan Cooke electrified the crowd with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Cooke’s return swung the momentum firmly in Kansas’ favor and helped the Jayhawks pull away.

Defensively, Kansas had moments of brilliance but also some lapses that allowed Iowa State to stay within striking distance. Linebacker Logan Brantley led the pass rush with 1.5 sacks, while Seth Sahara, Donte Cantrell, and Lyle Carreon also contributed sacks. Cornerback Jeremiah Moses came up with a key interception in the second half, halting an Iowa State drive. Senior safety Taylor Davis was also instrumental, forcing a fumble and recovering two.

“Defensively, we need to clean up some things,” said Kansas head coach Jordan McAlary. “We gave up too many explosive plays, and that’s something we’ll address. But I’m proud of our guys for finding ways to make plays when it mattered and coming away with the win.”

Iowa State’s offense showed flashes of brilliance behind quarterback Robert Coker, who threw for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Dylan Lee was a force on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, Lee also caught four passes for 34 yards and a score. However, the Cyclones were unable to overcome turnovers and missed opportunities in the red zone.

The Jayhawks, now ranked No. 3 in the nation, improve to 10-1 on the season. With Marshall back at full strength and the team firing on all cylinders, Kansas looks poised to continue its climb toward the College Football Playoff.

Next up for the Jayhawks is Oklahoma State, a Kansas win will punch their ticket to the Big 12 Championship.

Jayhawk Talk

Each week following their game Kansas Head Coach Jordan McAlary makes an appearance on KLWN to talk about the game, we'll include a few key points in this article.

On the team's overall performance:
"We knew coming in that Iowa State would challenge us in every phase of the game. I'm proud of how our guys stayed composed and executed when it mattered most. This was a total team win."

On the defense stepping up:
"Our defense wasn't quite lights out but they made some huge stops and kept us in the game when things got tight. I can’t say enough about how they rose to the occasion."

On the play of Isaiah Marshall:
"Isaiah told us he was 100% all week and he showed it in practice then out there in the game. Tough sledding through the air but he made huge plays with his legs. Both Isaiah and Brad [Matlock] stepp up when their number is called. They challenge each other and pick each other up. It’s a luxury to have two guys who can lead the offense like that."

On the contributions from the running backs:
"Avery [Muamba] and Johnny [Thompson Jr.] were fantastic for us again. They ran hard, protected the ball, and set the tone physically. When we control the ground game like that, it opens up so much for us offensively."

On what the win means moving forward:
"Every win in conference play is hard-earned, especially against a team like Iowa State. This is another step for us, but we know there’s a lot of work left to do. We’ll enjoy this one tonight and get back to work tomorrow."

Recruiting Update

“It may have taken us a little while to get here but we're ecstatic to have these two guys headed our way.” Kansas head coach Jordan McAlary said after Kansas secured B.J. Chase and Tavaris Lanonvoi as their first two commitments of this recruiting cycle.

Kansas revamped their board and made some internal process changes over the past week and immediately saw dividends from those adjustments.

Chase is the nation's 14th ranked middle linebacker. At 242 pounds Chase is a traditional thumper in the middle and brings some size to a position where Kansas could use some.

Lanovoi is a drop-back passer from Watkinsville, Georgia. At 6'4” Lanovoi has prototypical size for the position. He is the 35th ranked QB in the nation.
