Chapter III: Bonds Of Heisman

The New York Giants were experiencing a remarkable resurgence, having secured six consecutive victories following their dispiriting loss to the Washington Commanders. This winning streak had propelled the team into the upper echelons of the NFC rankings, assertively breaking into the top 10 and ambitiously setting their sights on the top five. The Atlanta Falcons, their next benchmark in the standings, appeared tantalizingly within reach. Meanwhile, the dismissive whispers that labeled Jodi as a bust had dissipated, replaced by a burgeoning recognition of his potential to redefine the Giants' trajectory. Despite the bye week offering an opportunity for recuperation, Jodi immersed himself in relentless preparation, meticulously analyzing game footage of their forthcoming adversary—the formidable Dallas Cowboys.

The film room door creaked open nearly an hour later, interrupting the quiet intensity of Jodi’s study. Enter Jozif, his gait exuding a nonchalant confidence characteristic of his British Jamaican heritage. His voice, marked by a thick accent, punctuated the stillness as he quipped, “If you over-study, mate, you’ll blow the game for us.”

Jodi’s focus remained unbroken. “This game’s massive,” he replied without looking up. “For me. For us. The Cowboys are leading the NFC at 9-1. They haven’t lost a game at home all season.”

A knowing grin spread across Jozif’s face. “Then we’ll be the first to change that,” he said, his tone imbued with unwavering confidence.

While Jozif’s optimism was infectious, Jodi’s mind lingered on the threat posed by Micah Parsons, the Cowboys’ relentless and game-changing defensive linchpin. “Everyone’s talking about Jodi Rogue versus Dak Prescott,” he remarked. “But I’m more concerned about staying out of Parsons’ grasp. That guy’s a nightmare.”

“Trust the process, bruv,” Jozif reassured, sliding into a nearby chair. “People doubted you before. They called you a fraud, remember? But you turned this team around. You beat Philly twice when no one gave us a shot. This isn’t any different.”

Jodi acknowledged the truth in Jozif’s words with a silent nod.

“And I’m back,” Jozif added with a playful wink. “Just find me in Arlington and watch me work.”

“Is it wise to undermine Malik?” Jodi asked, his tone laced with caution.

Jozif’s confidence was unshaken. “Don’t worry about Malik. We’re here for results, not consequences.”

Switching gears, Jodi shifted his attention. “How’s the shoulder holding up since your return?”

“Better than ever,” Jozif declared. “Those six catches last game weren’t flukes. I’m ready to bulldoze their defense, just like I did back at LSU.”

Jodi’s expression softened into a smile. “I wish we could’ve crossed paths in college. But I’m glad we’re on the same side now.”

“Damn right,” Jozif affirmed. “Now let’s focus on turning this ‘big blue ship’ around and steering it full sail into the playoffs. Super Bowl LXI is there for the taking.”

Jodi hesitated, his pragmatism surfacing. “I don’t know if we’re ready for that yet.”

Jozif’s demeanor grew serious, his voice steady and resolute. “Did you hear what Unc said on Nightcap? There’s more at stake than just wins and losses. It’s about our reputations. People are still doubting us, calling our defense soft. We need to prove them wrong.”

Jodi vividly recalled Shannon Sharpe’s pointed critique. Though harsh, it wasn’t entirely unwarranted; the defense had struggled at times, leaving the offense to shoulder the burden of victory.

“I want this offense to carry the team,” Jozif continued passionately. “We’re the ones putting points on the board. Forget Stefanski’s playbook; the ball is in your hands. Do what your name says, Jodi. Go Rogue.”

A reluctant smile tugged at Jodi’s lips. “Rogue-Man and Roadman, huh?”

“You know it,” Jozif replied, the fire in his eyes unmistakable. “We’re gonna mash up the league. Find me in Arlington, bruv. Let’s make history.”

Jozif left the room with his characteristic swagger, but not before Jodi lobbed a parting question. “Ayo, what happened to your accent?”

Jozif, caught off guard, muffled a laugh and waved as the door closed behind him.

Alone once more, Jodi found himself consumed by introspection. Was it prudent to assert dominance when he hadn’t even earned the captaincy? Thus far, he’d been conservative, prioritizing safe plays over bold risks. Yet this cautious approach had dulled the brilliance that once defined him at Oregon, where he regularly delivered 5-7 touchdown performances that captivated the nation.

Arlington would be the turning point. It had to be. If the Giants were to command respect, secure a playoff berth, and place the league on notice, it all hinged on this game. Leaning back in his chair, Jodi felt the enormity of the challenge settle upon him. It was time to transcend caution, to reignite the fire that had once made him great. And it all began with the Cowboys.

Morning light filtered into the facility as Jodi finally closed the laptop, stretching his stiff limbs. He walked through the quiet halls, each step heavy with purpose. He wasn’t alone in his mission, he knew that. The team had his back, and the fans, once skeptical, were beginning to believe. As he pushed open the doors to the parking lot, the crisp autumn air filled his lungs, a refreshing reminder of how far he’d come.

The Cowboys game loomed large, but Jodi welcomed the challenge. Every game had become a proving ground, not just for the team but for himself. He was no longer content with being adequate; he wanted to be extraordinary. Every throw, every play, every audible at the line of scrimmage—they were all steps on his path to greatness.

Later that week, Jodi found himself at a local charity event organized by the Giants. It was a chance to connect with the community, something he deeply valued. Among the attendees was a young fan, a boy no older than ten, who shyly approached him with a football in hand.

“Mr. Jodi, will you sign this?” the boy asked, his eyes wide with admiration.

Jodi knelt to meet the boy’s gaze. “What’s your name, champ?”

“Eli,” the boy replied.

Jodi smiled, recalling another Giant who had once been the heart of the team. He signed the ball with a flourish, adding a personal note: “To Eli, always chase your dreams. Your friend, Jodi.”

As he handed the ball back, the boy beamed. Moments like these reminded Jodi why he played the game. It wasn’t just for the accolades or the paycheck; it was for the impact he could have on others.

By the time game day arrived, Jodi felt a calm intensity settle over him. As the team stepped onto the field at AT&T Stadium, the roar of the crowd was deafening, a sea of silver and blue eager to see their Cowboys extend their dominance. But Jodi wasn’t intimidated. He had faced doubts, criticism, and adversity before, and each time he had risen stronger.
