Recruiting Update

Jayhawks lose out on a pair of four stars

Kansas, who has yet to land a commitment, received bad news from a pair of their top targets yesterday as four star offensive tackle Stephen Chancey verbally committed to Iowa State. Chancey is the nation's 21st ranked right tackle.
Later in the day Kansas received word that defensive tackle Nick Ballage had cut his list down to three schools and that they had not made he cut. Ballage ranks his top three as Nebraska, Colorado and Iowa State, who leapfrogged Kansas last week.
Three star outside linebacker Jojo Roper also eschewed Kansas in favor of Bowling Green where he should start immediately.
“We're just going to keep grinding out there on the recruiting trail hust like we do in every other aspect of the program.” Kansas head coach Jordan McAlary said when asked about the Jayhawks lack of signings.

Fort Worth, Texas -
Kansas started fast, but TCU found its footing and pulled away for a 45-21 victory on Saturday afternoon at Amon G. Carter Stadium. Despite a flurry of early turnovers, the Horned Frogs used explosive plays and a strong second half to secure the win.

Kansas opened the game with promise, as Johnny Thompson Jr. broke loose for a 14-yard gain on the first play. However, after a pair of incompletions, the Jayhawks were forced to punt. Their defense, though, gave the offense multiple chances early on by intercepting TCU quarterback Josh Hoover three times in the first half.

The Jayhawks struck first at the end of the opening quarter. Wide receiver Keaton Kubecka took a jet sweep three yards for a touchdown, giving Kansas a 7-0 lead. It was a promising start for a Kansas team looking to upset the Horned Frogs on the road.
After two early interceptions in the second quarter, TCU finally got on the scoreboard with a 51-yard field goal by Nate McCashland, who had missed from 47 yards out in the first quarter. Kansas kicker Shaq Durham then missed a 52-yard attempt, and TCU took advantage. Hoover hit Ben Alba for a 50-yard touchdown two plays later, putting the Horned Frogs up 10-7.

Kansas shuffled quarterbacks throughout the game, starting with Isaiah Marshall, who struggled mightily. He was replaced by Brad Matlock, who showed flashes with a 29-yard pass to Damien Keo before being intercepted by TCU’s Zachary Chapman. Hoover capitalized with a 39-yard pass to Major Everhart, followed by a nine-yard touchdown to Alba, giving TCU a 17-7 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Kansas returned to Marshall, but his struggles continued as he was picked off by TCU linebacker Brock Atwood, who returned it 50 yards to set up another Hoover-to-Alba connection for a touchdown. Trailing 24-7, Kansas turned to Adonis Saturday, making his season debut. Saturday provided a spark, hitting Keo for a 47-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 17-14.

That would be the closest Kansas would get. Hoover took over in the fourth quarter, throwing two touchdown passes to Dozie Ezukanma. Running back Cam Cook capped off the scoring with a late touchdown run. Saturday found backup tight end Carson Bruhn for a late touchdown, but the outcome was already decided.

Hoover finished the game with 345 passing yards and five touchdowns despite his three interceptions. Alba was his favorite target, hauling in five catches for 100 yards and three scores. Ezukanma added four receptions for 58 yards and two touchdowns, while Cook rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries.

Kansas’ quarterback play was inconsistent throughout the game. Marshall completed only 5 of 16 attempts, while Matlock’s brief appearance ended in an interception. Saturday was the bright spot, completing 10 of 20 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns in relief. Saturday fumbled twice on runs, however both were recovered by the Kansas offense.

Head coach Jordan McAlary declined to comment on the quarterback situation, stating only, "We’ve got some decisions to make, and it starts with putting our players in the best position to succeed."

Kansas falls to 5-2 on the season, while TCU improves to 5-3. The Jayhawks will look to regroup before hosting BYU next week, hoping to find answers at the quarterback position and turn their season around.

You spread the ball out a lot.

That’s a tough loss though.
