Lawrence, Kansas - The Kansas Jayhawks put on a spirited performance against their rival Missouri, powering through a mix of high points and costly errors to notch a decisive 49-24 victory. This win brought Kansas to 2-0 on the season, ending a three-game losing streak against Missouri, now 0-2 after a tough start to their season.
Quarterback Isaiah Marshall had an up-and-down game, marked by his impressive athleticism but marred by costly mistakes. Marshall threw for 277 yards, completed 19 of 31 passes with a touchdown, but also tossed three interceptions. Still, his four rushing touchdowns were pivotal, as his legs kept the Missouri defense on their heels throughout.
Kansas jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after Marshall capped an opening 75-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jaden Hamm. A missed extra point by Shaq Durham left the score at 6-0, and the Jayhawks wasted no time regaining possession after Missouri’s offense sputtered on a quick three-and-out.
Marshall looked ready to extend the lead with a 35-yard strike to Avery Muamba, but Missouri’s Marcus Fitzgerald picked him off in the end zone. However, Kansas got the ball back soon after, courtesy of a strip sack and fumble recovery by defensive lineman Greydon Grimes at Missouri’s 43. A couple of plays later, Kansas found itself on the 3-yard line, but Marshall’s fourth-down pass attempt was knocked down by Missouri’s secondary.
Kansas quickly turned defensive pressure into points. Missouri’s Sam Horn was sacked in the end zone by Kansas’s Lyle Carreon, giving the Jayhawks a safety and an 8-0 lead. However, Marshall threw his second interception shortly after, setting up Missouri deep in Kansas territory. Horn connected with tight end Brett Norfleet for a 20-yard touchdown, cutting Kansas’s lead to 8-7.
Marshall responded with a 6-yard touchdown run, giving Kansas a 15-7 cushion. Another Missouri punt handed Kansas the ball, and Johnny Thompson Jr. pushed through for a 6-yard touchdown run, though another missed extra point kept the score at 21-7. Missouri narrowed the lead with a 57-yard touchdown bomb from Horn to Joshua Manning, but Marshall struck back with a huge 54-yard pass to Keaton Kubecka, setting up his own 10-yard touchdown run for a 28-14 lead.
Kansas defensive back Jalen Todd then picked off Horn just before halftime, capping a defensive surge. Missouri’s Blake Craig opened the second half with a booming 54-yard field goal, but Kansas answered with a one-yard touchdown by power runner Glen Jue, set up by a clutch 27-yard pass from Brad Matlock to Jaden Hamm.
Marshall added another touchdown run in the third, bringing the lead to 42-17, but Missouri’s Carl Valentine swung momentum briefly with a pick-six to close the gap to 42-24. Kansas recovered the onside kick, and Marshall closed out the game with his fourth rushing touchdown, setting the final score at 49-24.
Isaiah Marshall led the Kansas offense with 277 yards on 19-of-31 passing, throwing one touchdown but also three interceptions, while adding 45 rushing yards and an impressive four rushing touchdowns. Johnny Thompson Jr. contributed heavily on the ground with 141 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, while Avery Muamba added versatility with 88 rushing yards on 14 carries and five receptions for 101 yards. Tight end Jaden Hamm was a reliable target, catching seven passes for 82 yards and a touchdown, while Keaton Kubecka chipped in with three catches for 72 yards.
The Kansas defense made a major impact, recording four sacks and three takeaways, including a strip sack and recovery by Greydon Grimes, and interceptions from Kaleb Purdy and Jalen Todd.
For Missouri, quarterback Sam Horn posted 372 passing yards with two touchdowns but also threw two interceptions. Joshua Manning led Missouri’s receiving corps with 122 yards on six catches and a touchdown. Missouri’s defense was spearheaded by Nicholas Rodriguez, who racked up 16 tackles, and Carl Valentine, who scored on a pick-six.
Kansas heads into week three with strong momentum and a dynamic, albeit occasionally erratic, performance from Marshall. Despite turnovers, his dual-threat ability carried Kansas through, and the Jayhawks’ defense backed him up with relentless pressure, sacks, and timely takeaways. For Missouri, the search for answers continues, with pressure mounting to overcome a rough 0-2 start.
