DONTE LEE JR FIGHTS FOR KENT STATE'S LONE SCORE
---
Lubbock, Texas – Kent State's defense had an outstanding game against Texas tech, holding the Red Raiders' offense to 153 yards and only allowing them to score one offensive touchdown. Unfortunately, a pair of scores resulting from Kent State turnovers was more than enough to secure a 24-7 win in Lubbock.

“It's disappointing to get that type of effort from one side of the ball and have it all unravel due to turnovers and penalties.” said Kent State head coach Tyson Veidt, a former defensive coordinator.

The Kent State offensive line struggled yet again, giving up six sacks and allowing the Texas Tech defense to harass Tommy Ulatowski for most of the game, leading to a pick six and a pair of fumbles, one of which was scooped up and returned for a touchdown.

The Flashes led 7-0 after Ulatowski connected with Donte Lee Jr for a nine yard touchdown midway through the second quarter. The score came after the Flashes recovered a muffed punt by Texas Tech.

Kent State relinquished the lead early in the second half when Ulatowski coughed up the ball on a sack and Texas Tech's Peyton Morgan picked it up in stride and took it 42 yards to the house. Later in the third Caleb Largo scored on a three yard run for the Red Raiders, giving them a 14-7 lead.

Kent State's offense was plagued by sacks and penalties in the second half, facing 20+ yards to go on multiple occasions.

Texas Tech added a Steve Sampson field goal early in the fourth quarter then put the game away for good when Jalon Peoples picked off an Ulatowski pass and took it 54 yards for a score. Ulatowski was hit as he attempted to connect with Chrishon McCray on an out breaking route.

“We've just got to get better.” Offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary said after the game. “Better on the field, better on the sidelines. Just better.”

In addition to their pass blocking woes the offensive line also struggled to open things up in the running game as Gavin Garcia was held to just 19 yards on ten carries and Curtis Douglas only managed four yards on three carries.

Kent State will host UMass on September 27th following a week off.

Coaches Corner

Offensive Coordinator Jordan McAlary
By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | September 15, 2025

Each week in the days following Kent State's game I will spend a few moments chatting with members of the coaching staff. I'll share some key points in this column.

This morning I spoke with offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary following Kent State's loss at Texas Tech.

Struggled offensively after scoring 56 last week. What was the big difference there?
Well certainly the caliber of the opponent, on the road, turnovers, sacks. There were multiple factors.

You've got the extra week to prepare. You've had a couple tough games with a really good one sandwiched between them. What's the focus with the extra week?
Well we're looking at a couple personnel adjustments. We'll be going over the playbook. Some extra film study. Just trying to put a polish on everything with the extra week of prep time.

This week's player of the week?
Chrishon McCray had another big one for us which we have kind of come to expect. Mo Hazime stepped up for us and had a nice game as well.

Flashes lose pair of prospects

WR Allman choses Akron
By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | September 16, 2025

Three star WR Hugh Allman of Royersford, PA announced yesterday that he would be signing with Akron, choosing the Zips over Kent State.
Kent State also learned that Greenwood, Indianna's Barry Levcik has eliminated them from consideration. The three star offensive tackle is believed to be leaning toward Western Michigan.

Flashes shuffle OL, Hazime forcing his way on the field
By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | September 23, 2025

Flashes to start shuffled OL lineup vs UMass
After giving up a plethora of sacks to start the season the Kent State coaching staff has shuffled the offensive line.

Tristen Bittner has moved from right guard out to right tackle, replacing the struggling Garrett Masterson, who has given up five sacks so far this season. Nikolai Bujnowski will start at right guard.

"We had to do something to clean things up up front." Offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary explained. "Bujnowski pushed those guys for a starting spot this spring and wasn't far behind. We're hoping this will light a fire under them and be the change the group needs to flourish."

Hazime earning reps
After not expecting to use the TE as much this season senior Mohammed Hazime has forced the coaching staff to adjust things to get him on the field. He is second on the team with 206 yards. His 13 receptions is third behind Chrishon McCray and Gavin Garcia.

"Mo has been great for us. He's come through in some big spots where we needed a first down and he's picked things up quickly. We're looking forward to seeing him continue to make progress this season." McAlary explained.

All things considered, holding Texas Tech to a 3-scoring margin is not bad. If Kent was able to put more points on the board, could've been a real game.

Hopefully UMass won't continue the funk and y'all bounce back

Yeah TTs offense was garbage. If we didn't gift them two defensive scores we may have had a shot.

Schedule gets a lot easier now with all teams essentially the same ratings as us.
