I turned my head and looked down at her. To me, this is the first time I am introducing myself to her.

updated first page

Editor's note: I took a break from this after finishing the first act, and it's been over a month since the last update lol. I don't want to put this off any further so I'm gonna get this out of the way now. Welcome to the end of the prologue. For those who are not familiar with my previous chises, this is a hard reboot to Make It Rain which was supposed to be about following a career of bust or mediocre player. Unfortunately, Tavon was way better than I was expecting. The chise ended up heavily deviating from my original idea and became more of a mess the longer I continued. I burned out and somehow 5 years had passed since I last made a chise :pgdead:

The idea for this chise was in the backburner for 2 years, but I thought it'd finally be a good time to pull the trigger this year. Coincidentally, this year marks 10 years since I started chising. What better way to celebrate my 10 year anniversary than a chise featuring a character from my last ever chise before my 5 year break. This time, I plan on giving Tavon more respect and a career more befitting to him. I'm pretty happy with how this has turned out so far. I already storyboarded the next 3 seasons, and I've been testing out some stuff that I plan to use for the upcoming parts. It's CFB season now, but I'll try to get updates here soon. Thanks for following, guys.

Thanks, I really want to see this one through until the end. I've never put this much effort and planning into a chise before.

After a lot of procrastination and EA fucking up the blocking more in the latest patch for CFB 25, we finally back at it again :letsgo:

Act 2 Chapter 1

Spring 2021

Four years after the death of Danny Mortisson

Classroom buzzed with laughs and chatters as the teacher was browsing on his laptop at his desk without a single care of his surroundings. In the back corner of the classroom, a group of teenage boys huddled together.

“Yo, K.J. You know about Hakeem Marion?” a short statured boy dressed in Nike Tech asked one of his friends in the circle.

“The dude that Ballislife’s slobbing all over?” K.J. answered as he looked away from his phone. “I’ve rewatched his mixtape a couple times. In my opinion, he’s a little overrated but he’s still nice as hell.”

“You hear the latest news about him?”

“What? Did he say where’s he’s going for college? I bet it’s UConn. No way in hell he would go to some bum ass school like Penn State.”

“Hey, don’t sleep on Penn State. They got that Saquon Barkley guy, yeah?”

K.J. smacks his friend in the back of the head. “Landry, you got CTE or something? Saquon plays football and he’s been in the NFL for years.”

“Oh, right. You know I’m playing with you. I knew that,” Landry chuckled, rubbing the back of his head.

“So, what’s the Hakeem news?”

“Ah right, almost forgot about that. Word’s out that Hakeem’s gonna retire.”

“Retire?!” K.J.’s brows raised, and his eyes widened. “Why?”

“He got a knee injury so bad that the doctor said they needed to amputate his leg. Something about a huge blood clot in his knee or some shit.”

“The hell happened to him?”

“Nobody is quite sure what happened. Rumor has it that he went against some kid in a 1-on-1. He fell awkwardly after getting crossed over and couldn’t stand up.”

“Damn, that’s tough,” K.J. grimaced, imagining the scene in his head. “So much for becoming ‘him.’” The bell rang, and the teacher stepped out of the classroom without saying a single word.

“Hey, let’s hoop at the park after school!” Landry grabbed his backpack from the bottom of his desk and leaped out of his seat.

“You really want to hoop after telling us that story?” K.J. sighed and peered behind his shoulder at their other friend who was silent the entire class hour. “What about you? You gonna join us this time, Tavon?”

“Hell no,” Tavon’s eyes focused on the screen of his Switch.

“Come on. Just one time?”

“How many fucking times do I have to tell you no? I don’t play basketball.”

“You’re wasting all that height! Pause,” K.J. halted briefly before speaking up again. “You’re not even in high school and you’re almost six feet tall! Give it a try, will ya? I’ll even pay you just to see you touch a ball.”

“No. Bye,” Tavon shoves his Switch into his bag and quickly leaves the room.

Landry pats K.J. on the back. “Just give it up. He’s a lost cause.”

“I can’t do that.”

“I have never seen Tavon touch a ball in my life. All he has going for him is that’s he’s tall. He usually just sits in the stands during PE. Why do you keep trying to ask him to join?” Landry was perplexed by K.J.’s insistence. For the past two years of knowing both, K.J. has always tried to ask Tavon to play; however, all attempts resulted in a rejection.

“You won’t understand.”

“Why not?”

K.J. looked down at his hand, unaware that his hand was trembling. “I saw him play once. Tavon…he’s a monster.”

--

Tavon paced himself on the sidewalk, stepping over the lines of each slab to satiate his boredom on his way home. Turning around the corner, he noticed a large group of people walking through a gate. On his left was Xanadu High School, a place he always felt uncomfortable walking past on his way to and from school. Today, however, he felt an odd feeling that the place was calling for him. Curiosity got the best of him, and he decided to follow the crowd inside. He slithered through the crowd until he was at the front.

A man in a brown suit stood up on a podium as he stood facing a bustling crowd holding up their phones and flashing cameras. Behind him was a gymnasium which still reeked of the smell of new paint. The windows up top sparkled as the sun shone upon it.

“Thank you to everyone who has come here for this momentous event in Xanadu High School history. Today marks the grand opening of our brand-new gymnasium. Some of you may not know the backstory of how this gymnasium came to be. Four years ago, we lost a student who sacrificed his own life to save another. You may have heard of him before,” the man grabbed the mic off the stand and pressed the remote on his other hand. The previously blank projector screen behind him now showed a picture of a white boy in his teens wearing a #23 Xanadu basketball jersey.

Tavon scowled as his eyes laid upon the picture on the screen. “Of all people, why him?”

As the man started telling his story, Tavon knew very well about the individual who the man on stage was talking about. Xanadu high school’s greatest basketball player in history. The one who carried the basketball team to its only state championship in school history. Most importantly to Tavon, it was the person who saved his life.

On the night before this person died, he visited the house of the school’s basketball coach and gave him a letter. Inside that letter was a simple but odd request: for the coach to bet his life savings on some Japanese horse race. The letter specifically stated to bet on a horse named Cheval Grand, who was owned by former Seattle Mariners pitcher Kazuhiro Sasaki. With 15-1 odds to win, that horse shockingly came up on top with its first and only G1 race victory in its career. The reason for that request or even how that person knew who would win will always remain a mystery. Nobody close to this person had any idea that he was into horse racing, let alone foreign ones.

Although the coach did not bet all his life savings like what the letter wished, he still placed a hefty bet on the race in honor of his former player. He donated his winning earnings to the school which was used for typical improvements such as new lockers, classrooms, textbooks, and school supplies; however, he wanted most of the money to put into building a brand-new gymnasium and weight room. If it were not for that person’s request, the coach would have never even thought about betting on a foreign horse race in the first place.

“Of course, we wanted to dedicate something to this student,” the man stepped back on the podium and held out his hand towards the building behind him. “After four years of planning and developing, I present to you all the opening of Danny Mortisson Gymnasium.” Tavon turned around and headed for the exit while applause roared in the vicinity.

It has been four years since he has been in this world. There has been a plethora of stories about reincarnation or a second chance at life. For Tavon, this was not his first rodeo; however, this one seemed to be different than what he was accustomed to.

For Tavon’s previous deaths, he was transported to a pitch-black room with a center light shining upon an angel sitting on a throne. The angel would decide upon the person’s fate. Usually, it would be placing the person in heaven or hell; but some people may be given a third option—reincarnation. Specifically, reincarnating as a highly skilled athlete. If they select this option, they will be granted another chance at life with a special ability of their choosing.

None of that happened this time though. After he presumedly died from getting run over by a car, he suddenly woke up in this world inside a ten-year old body. Four years have now passed, and Tavon still has no idea what happened. He has been unable to communicate with Haziel, the angel he had accompanied him in his previous life, since awakening into this world.

If Tavon died in that apartment instead of Danny, would have he been able to escape this world? That question has remained haunting Tavon’s mind since that fateful day.

--

“I’m home,” Tavon enters to his house with no response.

He walked over to the kitchen to grab a drink but came to a halt midway to his destination after seeing what was on the living room TV screen.

“Today, Xanadu High School opened their brand-new gymnasium called Danny Mortisson Gymnasium, named after the high school basketball star who has lost his life-”

“Louise, you need to avoid watching that kind of stuff,” Tavon turned off the TV and tossed the remote back on the couch.

Louise tilted her head back to see who was behind her. “Oh, Tavon. Welcome back. How was school?”

Tavon opened the fridge and started shopping for a beverage. “Fine.”

“Did you decide where you will go to high school next year?”

“Not yet.”

“You really need to hurry up and decide. It’s almost the end of the school year. Why not go to Xanadu?” Tavon, now in eighth grade, had to start preparing for high school next year.

“Hell no. Anywhere but there.”

“Why not? It’s in our district. If you wanted to go elsewhere, we should’ve been working on that a long time ago. You know how hard the process to apply and transfer for a school out of district?”

“Then I’ll go to a private school.”

“Does it look like we can afford the tuition?”

“Work on getting more job interviews then,” Tavon grabs a can of Sprite and heads over to the stairs. “Maybe you’ll be able to pay rent on time for once.”

Louise springs off the couch and clenches her fist. “Cassius!”

“I told you to stop calling me that,” Tavon glares at Louise before continuing going up the stairs again.

Tavon entered his room and slammed the door behind him. Sliding down to the floor, he crawled into a ball. “Cassius is dead…” Tavon mutters to himself quietly.

After Danny and Louise’s mother have died, Louise decided to adopt Tavon and become his legal guardian. Instead of going to the University of Washington like she originally planned, she started working to be able to care for herself and Tavon. They were surviving for the most part, but everything started to change after COVID happened. Louise has been unable to keep a job long term since the pandemic started and has been having difficulty paying the bills recently. She has been able to keep her and Tavon afloat due to her grandparents sending her money every month.

“Heh, there you are,” Tavon lifted his head and stared at the faint figure on the other side of the room.

“Came to haunt me again?”

The figure did not respond.

“Still giving me the silent treatment, huh? This might be Hell after all.”
