South Alabama coach Jerome Singleton praises defense amid Jaguars offensive struggles

The University of South Alabama's offense did not score a point for nearly fifty minutes as the Jaguars' defense were able to hold off UL Monroe, shutting out the Warhawks in the second half as the Jags completed the comeback effort to win in overtime.
"Hats off to the players on defense," South Alabama DC Jerome Singleton said of his unit after the 16-13 win, "When you're not getting much offensively, you keep having to go out there with the scoreboard not changing, you can lose hope and lose that motivation to line up one more time. Our guys hung in there, kept making plays and kept belief that our offense would eventually get points on the board and they did."
Through six games, South Alabama's defense is ranked second in the Sun Belt in passing defense, rushing defense and first in scoring defense and total defense.

South Alabama defensive coordinator Jerome Singleton will be patrolling an SEC or Big Ten sideline near you very soon, that much is clear for the 33-year old in his second season as the Jaguars defensive coordinator.
The Jaguars are ranked inside the Top 25 for the first time in program history, coming in at No. 24 with a chance to rise if they manage to run the table and beat a fellow ranked team in Louisiana before advancing to the Sun Belt Championship Game where they'll play either Marshall or App State who are likely to be ranked as well.
Singleton's defense has led the Jaguars to a 7-2 record, rattling off six straight victories after a 1-2 start to the year that had many wondering if there would be a year two drop-off. Singleton was courted by several schools in the offseason for head coaching and defensive coordinator opportunities but opted to return to Mobile under new head coach Jaren Bloom.
Singleton was promoted to Assistant Head Coach during the offseason amid those rumors of his exodus and it's paid dividends on the recruiting trail with the Jaguars having two four-star defensive players committed in the class already in defensive end Logan Deberry (Richmond, TX) and outside linebacker Bradley Procter (Cape Coral, FL). Singleton was instrumental in their recruitment as well as the signing of four-star inside linebacker Coco Generals last cycle who is second on the team with fifteen tackles for loss.
The success of the Jaguars will only increase the demand for Singleton whose energetic personality, NFL playing experience and head coaching resume at the high school level makes him an intriguing candidate for Group of 5 head coaching jobs and certainly a hot name for Power 4 coordinator gigs.
