Coaches Corner
Offensive Coordinator Jordan McAlary
By Don Knotts | @theotherdonknotts | September 3, 2024, 11:09am EDT
Each week in the days following Kent State's game I will spend a few moments chatting with members of the coaching staff. I'll share some key points in this column.
This morning I spoke with offensive coordinator Jordan McAlary following Kent State's 31-23 loss at Pitt this past Saturday.
What are some of the things the team did well to help stay competitive on the road against an ACC team?
I'd say on the whole we executed well. We put up over over 100 yards in the running game and we were efficient there. Did pretty well cashing in on the red zone opportunities. Found the open man and took what they gave us. We did well sustaining drives and had a bit of an advantage in possession time.
What went wrong?
Obviously you can't turn the ball over four times and expect to beat a talented team. We'll take a close look at the turnovers and try to figure out what needs to happen to try and limit those going forward. Also not great on third down, I think we got 6 of 13 there so we need a little more success there. That comes down to putting ourselves in a good position on first and second down, making those third downs a bit easier and giving us a bit more freedom in playcalling.
Can you give us a player of the week?
Gavin Garcia. Ran hard. Contributed well in the passing game. Did well in pass protection when we asked him to. Bounced back after the fumble.
What are some points of emphasis heading into this week's game against St. Francis?
Ball security for sure, that's at the top of our list. A little better results on first and second down so we're looking at more manageable third downs and a bit more playcalling freedom.
