...Parallel...
“Damn, what an article... Never thought you’d make this big so fast...” Nikitia reads on about Johan and his rapid rise in the NBA. For a moment, she sat back in the chair, reflecting on the younger days of their blossoming friendship. Both closing in on their teen years and both with such a deep love for basketball. Every day after school, Johan and Nikita would find them-selves playing a game of Horse or one-on-one until their parents picked them up from the gym. It would be basketball that kept these two lives parallel until that fateful day.
“Hey girly, what you reading up on?” Nikita’s Aunt nearly startling Nikita out of her zone. “Hey Auntie. Nothing much, just reading an article on some NBA players. There’s this new rookie I’ve been following, he’s playing better than a lot of people thought.” “Well, good for him. You know I’m not into all that sports stuff, I leave that to your Uncle. Here, I made you some tea. It’s been chilly lately.” “Thank you. Auntie, may I ask you a question?” “Sure love, what’s on your mind.” Nikita’s Aunt takes a seat next to her.
“Did Dad do the right thing? Sending me here?” “Well, I really can't say sweetie. I understand your father was really disappointed in you, as any parent would be of a situation you put your-self in. But was coming here the right decision? I don’t know. What matters most is the hand you’re dealt with and how you play your hand for a better outcome.” Nikita sips on the tea as she heeds her Aunt’s words, “I just feel they were being a bit rash, like, I felt like I lost everything, my parents, friends, not to mention my scholarship.” “Sweetie, you getting pregnant is what made you lose those things. But I’m sure your parents love every bit of you and miss you too. I don’t doubt that. And look at you now. You’re a mother of a beautiful baby boy and he’s growing up so fast, so are you. You got your act together, finished school and still found time to play basketball and be good mother. I can’t say much about the father of your child, if he’d ever be as good as you, but your baby boy is so proud of you. I’m proud of you. We’re all proud of you Kita.”
“Thanks Auntie.”
“So, does it still matter whether you were sent down here or not?” “No, it doesn’t matter.” “Good, because in life, there are so many paths you’re going to take. Every road is filled with new danger and wonderous adventure. Now, I’m not saying go down every road you come across and see what’s lurking around. But do your best to choose the right path for you and your child. Make a name for your-self your child would be proud of.” Nikita sets the mug on the table and gives her Aunt a warm hug.
It’s been nearly six full months since she last saw Johan and she hasn’t been right with her-self since. A part of her wanted that bond with Johan, for her-self and their son. But a choice she made ensured Johan would follow his dream to make the NBA. While her Aunt’s words helped cheer her up a bit, she still knew that one thing was needed to be done, right her wrongs.
Just as Nikita would ready to head off to bed after tending to her son, Johan Jr., a text came in on her phone, “Friday is almost here, you ready?” “Of course. This is what I’ve been working towards all my life”, Nikita replied. “Okay, it’s free game verbally, but the real deal is still a couple weeks out.” “Hope we impress someone.” “Don’t worry, you got this. Get some sleep.” Nikita shuts her phone down for the night as she sits on her bed. “I really hope we do...”
