that was intense. typo, it was 153 yards. can't seem to string together two good games for either QB.
Season not over yet. Still time to find that guy for the CC game
yup very early, plenty of time to decide who the guy is. Houston should give us a chance to try some stuff.

Houston, Texas -
Kansas’ undefeated start and #5 ranking took a shocking hit Saturday night, as the Jayhawks fell 27-21 to Houston in a nail-biting contest. Despite their 4-0 record coming into the game, Kansas couldn’t overcome Houston’s big plays and a decisive defensive stand in the final moments.

The game started promisingly for Kansas, with Johnny Thompson Jr. capping a strong opening drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to put the Jayhawks up early. Houston answered with an Allen Clark 42-yard field goal, keeping the game close.

In the second quarter, Houston quarterback Caleb McMickle showcased his poise, connecting on two touchdown passes—a 41-yard bomb to Nick Shaw and an 8-yard strike to Delon Singleton. Kansas quarterback Brad Matlock briefly pulled the Jayhawks ahead with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Trey'Dez Green, but the Cougars took a 17-14 lead into halftime.

Kansas seemed to regain control in the third quarter, as Thompson Jr. scored his second touchdown of the night on a 3-yard run, giving the Jayhawks a 21-17 lead heading into the final frame. But the fourth quarter belonged to Houston. Zach Hunter broke free for an 81-yard touchdown run, and Clark’s 39-yard field goal stretched the lead to six points.

The Jayhawks, in true top-5 form, showed their resilience on the final drive. Kansas mounted a grueling 17-play march down the field, relying on their powerful ground game to push into scoring position. Facing fourth-and-goal at the Houston 5-yard line, Brad Matlock attempted to connect with tight end Jaden Hamm in the end zone, but Houston’s defense delivered the play of the night, breaking up the pass to seal the upset.

“It’s tough, no question,” Kansas head coach Jordan McAlary said after the game. “We came in confident and prepared, but you have to give Houston credit. They made the plays when it mattered most.”

The loss drops Kansas to 4-1, while Houston pulled off the upset of the weekend, fueled by McMickle’s passing and Hunter’s game-breaking run. The Jayhawks will need to regroup quickly, as their Big 12 title aspirations hinge on bouncing back from this stunner.

Jayhawk Talk

Each week following their game Kansas Head Coach Jordan McAlary makes an appearance on KLWN to talk about the game, we'll include a few key points in this article.

On the loss to Houston:
“You know, losing always stings, but I’ll tell you this—our guys fought. That last drive showed the kind of grit this team has. A 17-play drive in crunch time? That’s not something every team can pull off. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t finish the job when it mattered most.”

On the defensive struggles:
“We gave up a couple of backbreaking plays, and that’s what really hurt us. The 81-yard touchdown run? That can’t happen at this level, not when you’re trying to win tough road games. It’s a discipline thing, and we’re addressing it this week in practice.”

On the lessons learned from the game:
“This is a gut-check moment for us. When you’re ranked in the top five, you’re going to get everyone’s best shot. We’ve got to embrace that challenge. The good news is, I still believe in this group. Losses like this don’t define a season—it's how you respond.”

On the struggles of the pass rush:
“Our pass rush just wasn’t where it needed to be against Houston. Caleb McMickle had way too much time in the pocket, and when you give a quarterback like that a clean look, he’s going to make plays. We’ve got to be more disruptive up front—pressure changes games, and we didn’t bring enough of it. That’s something we’re drilling hard this week because it has to improve if we want to win in this conference.”
