NFL Hot Takes
Damn these takes were straight fire
NFL Hot Takes
Not a hot take but I’ve recently been seeing a lot from the league’s running backs. Is the play style of football moving away from RB’s?

yes and its been for the last few years. the most scheme-dependent position in the league currently. my thought is that they used to be the most athletic players on the field, but now u see guys that are just as fast and shifty playing linebacker and safety which neutralizes the athleticism.
RBs really just need to be able to read the defense/find the hole and be fast. but that type of athleticism is becoming more and more common. a guy like tyreek hill would have been a running back if u placed him in the 1990s - like barry sanders. guys like reggie bush and darren sproles - dual run-catch threats - are probably the new norm moving forward i think.
until we see a new breed of freak-athleticism. derrick henry for example is a freak. but i feel like the pendulum always swings from one extreme to the next before balancing out eventually.
waiting to see the all-pass offense. nfl and nba are running similar trends in that way i think.

Good points all around. An all-pass offense sounds like teams better start investing more in their backup QBs

Not so much an all pass offense as the RB position has become a committee approach. Teams are using 3 or 4 different RBs with varied skill sets as opposed to the bell cow who gets 30 touches a game.

I disagree. I think the issue with the RB market is oversaturation, not that the NFL is going towards all-passing. According to https://www.fftoday.com/stats/22_run_pass_ratios.html, only 8 teams had a pass ratio above 60% last season. going back 10 years, there were 7. For the most part, most teams are in the 50-55% range with a few under and a few over.mvp wrote: ↑18 Jul 2023, 10:52yes and its been for the last few years. the most scheme-dependent position in the league currently. my thought is that they used to be the most athletic players on the field, but now u see guys that are just as fast and shifty playing linebacker and safety which neutralizes the athleticism.

What has changed is you can just find a really good running back pretty late in the draft and for cheap. For example, is there a big difference between Rhamondre Stevenson and Saquon Barkley? Barkley is better but by how much and is the difference worth the tens of millions of dollars?
It's also one of the more physical positions where playing banged up is very noticeable. OL/DL is more physical but guys can play through more injuries and generally have longer careers. A bad hammy or tweaked ankle severely hampers the effectiveness of a running back. You can't just tape it up and hope to get 80% of the production like you do at OL/DL
