Springfield, MO (AP) – The Missouri State Bears welcomed an invitation to the newly formed Big Ten last winter. They have been surprisingly competetive in their first year in the conference. On Saturday evening, they fell 44-27 to Kansas at Robert W. Plaster Stadium.

The Bears were aggressive from the start in this one, turning the ball over on downs on their own 40 yard line on their first offensive series. Kansas drove 40 yards in five plays with Yasin Willis running it in from 1 yard out to give the Jayhawks an early 7-0 lead.

Missouri State responded with an 11-play, 53 yard drive that ended with a 47 yard field goal from Yousef Obeid. The Bears forced a three-and-out from Kansas, then drove it down to the Jayhawks 34, where the drive stalled. On fourth and four, they passed on a field goal attempt and Skyler Locklear's pass fell incomplete.

Kansas again went three-and-out, punting it back to the Bears. Skyler Locklear led the Bears on a 64 yard drive, capping it off with a five yard touchdown down pass to Isaiah Myers, to go on top 10-7. A key play on the drive was a fourth and two conversion from the Kansas 18 yard line as Locklear hit Makai Cope for a gain of 11.

The Kansas offense put together a nice response, but their drive also stalled, with Martin Connington kicking a 44 yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10.

After the teams exchanged punts, Kansas took over at the Missouri State 49 yard line. A holding call on first down set the Jayhawks back, but Isaiah Marshall completed passes of 12 yards to Cam Pickett, 18 yards to Nik McMillan, and 18 yards to Carson Bruhn, moving the ball to the Bears 13 yard line. On second down Marshall connected with Cam Pickett for an 11 yard gain. On the next play, Dylan Edwards took it in on an option pitch from two yards out and Kansas went up 17-10.

The Bears outgained Kansas 174 to 159 in the first half, and looked every bit the equal to the Jayhawks.

The second half opened up and disaster struck for Kansas as Isaiah Marshall was picked off on the third play, setting up the Bears at the Kansas 37 yard line. They moved the ball down to the six yard line, but Skyler Locklear got sacked on third and goal, forcing Yousef Obeid to kick a 33 yard field goal, cutting the Kansas lead to 17-13.

On the Jayhawks next possession, Isaiah Marshall was picked off again, this time at the Missouri State 25 yard line by Camron Williams, ending an 11-play drive. Kansas' defense again came up with a stop, sacking Skyler Locklear on third down and forcing a punt.

Kansas took over on their own 34. Five plays later, Isaiah Marshall scored on a quarterback keeper to put the Jayhawks up 24-13. Key play on the drive was a 27 yard scramble by Marshall down to the Bears 13 yard line. Three plays later, Skyler Locklear was sacked, fumbling the football, with Trey Lathan picking up the loose ball and returning it 33 yards for a touchdown to put Kansas up 31-13.

Early in the fourth, Ramon Green Jr scored on a 20 yard run and the Bears were back to within two scores.

Kansas added another Martin Connington field goal to go up by 14. This one was from 22 yards out. The Kansas defense then came up with a big interception, as Jaden Harris picked off Locklear at the Mo State 29 yard line. Three plays later, Isaiah Marshall hit Leyton Cure with an eight yard touchdown pass to make it 41-20. Corey Gordon then picked off Locklear, giving Kansas the ball at the Bears 37 yard line. Kansas turned it over on downs as Isaiah Marshall's fourth down pass fell incomplete, knocked down by Christian Ford.

Missouri State quickly moved 71 yards in four plays, scoring on a Jmariyae Robinson 18 yard touchdown pass from Skyler Locklear. The drive only took 34 seconds and the Bears closed the gap to 41-27. Kansas recovered the onside kick, but could not get a first down. Martin Connington came on to boot a 47 yard field goal, making it a three score game.

Missouri State would not score again, falling 44-27.

Skyler Locklear went 31 of 44 for 288 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Missouri State. Jmariyae Robinson caught eight passes for 93 yards and a score. Dylan Edwards ran for 125 yards and a score to lead Kansas.

The Jayhawks will return home to face Illinois (2-8, 1-6), for a Thursday evening contest, before closing the season at #1 Notre Dame.

As the season winds down , the games become more important. In Week 11, #12 Missouri took care of business, to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth. #13 Indiana rebounded to defeat Washington 38-14 in Seattle, keeping a faint playoff flicker alive. Iowa blew out Purdue in West Lafayette, Northwestern took care of Iowa State at home and Wisconsin doubled up Northern Illinois.

In the College Football Playoff Poll, Notre Dame slipped to #2 as they were on a BYE week and #2 Oklahoma beat #4 Texas Tech 35-24 on the road, moving up into the top spot. Missouri jumps five spots to #7 and Indiana moves up one spot to #12. Nebraska creeps up two spots to #22.

The Week 11 College Football Playoff standings are out, and we have a new #1 as Oklahoma has jumped back on top of Notre Dame after winning at Texas Tech. Notre Dame (Big Ten), Miami (Sun Belt) and Oregon (PAC-12) round out the teams with BYEs into the Quarterfinals.

LSU (SEC) and Wake Forest (ACC) are in as Power Four conference leaders. The at-large teams are: USC (PAC-12), Ohio State (MAC), Missouri (Big Ten), Texas A&M (Big XII), BYU (Mountain West), and Alabama (SEC).

The first three out are: Indiana (Big Ten), Boise State (PAC-12) and Texas Tech (Big XII).

This year's playoff will conclude in Las Vegas, NV at Allegiant Stadium.

Thanks! It has been an interesting season so far, hopefully we finish strong. A win over Illinois to get to seven wins would be nice. Not losing by 67 at Notre Dame would also be good!

The class is a bit shaky right now. I have teh one verbal and a few others that are close to giving us verbals. Transfer portal may be where we fill our roster.

McMillan has been great for us. Recruiting at Kansas is tough. We don't have a ton of time to spend on players each week.
