San Antonio, TX. - The Utah Jazz made sure their first playoff appearance since 2022 ended in spectacular fashion, storming back from a 15-point third-quarter deficit to steal Game 1 from the San Antonio Spurs.

Despite facing a 10-point halftime hole that ballooned midway through the third quarter, the Jazz battled back relentlessly. The turning point came when De'Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama went to the bench with just over five minutes remaining in the third—at a moment when San Antonio held a commanding 15-point lead and Utah was struggling to hit open looks.

That's when Keyonte George and Ace Bailey sparked a 15-2 run to close the quarter, trimming the deficit to just two points heading into the fourth. The teams then exchanged hard-fought buckets and defensive stops before Bailey drilled a three-pointer with 25 seconds left to take the lead.

Fox had one final opportunity to tie the game and force overtime, but Anthony Black's suffocating defense forced the point guard into an off-balance leaner that rattled off the front rim.

Bailey, who scored 40 points in his playoff debut, finished 4-for-13 from three—but made sure his final attempt was the one that mattered most.

"I wanted to come out here, soak in the moment, and give the fans back in Utah something to celebrate," Bailey said after the game. "My shooting wasn't great for most of the night, but the only way to make shots is to keep shooting. Some go in, some don't. I'm just glad I made the one that mattered."

It's the kind of resilience that separates good players from great ones—the ability to stay confident despite struggling and deliver when the game is on the line.

Victor Wembanyama put up 27 points and 17 rebounds to help the Spurs build their substantial lead, but managed only 4 points in the fourth quarter as San Antonio's offense stalled down the stretch. De'Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper tried to keep the Spurs afloat, but couldn't generate enough offense to overcome Utah's defensive intensity in the final minutes.

The Jazz's depth and second-half adjustments ultimately proved to be the difference in a thrilling opening contest that suggests this series could be far more competitive than preseason predictions indicated.

Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday in San Antonio.

San Antonio, TX. - After blowing a 15-point third-quarter lead in Game 1, the San Antonio Spurs attempted to flip the script on the Utah Jazz in Game 2.

Utah came out scorching, building a 14-point halftime lead that ballooned to 21 early in the third quarter. But similar to Game 1, San Antonio battled back relentlessly, trimming the deficit to just 12 points by the fourth quarter.

That's when Victor Wembanyama took over.

The MVP favorite showcased the elite two-way skills that have dazzled the league all season, putting up 36 points (20 in the second half), 15 rebounds, and 9 blocks. Wembanyama was particularly sharp from three in the second half, hitting 3 three-pointers while the entire Jazz team managed just 1.

But Joe Mazzulla had seen enough.

After shooting a blistering 9-for-15 from beyond the arc in the first half while building their 14-point lead, Utah's shooters went ice-cold in the second. With shots not falling and San Antonio creeping closer, Mazzulla made a bold decision: Attack the paint.

It was a counterintuitive strategy against the towering, two-time Defensive Player of the Year—but Mazzulla had a philosophy to explain it.

"Look, we made a choice," Mazzulla said after the game. "Three-point shooting is great when it falls, but we weren't hitting them in the second half. So we attacked—attacked Wemby, attacked the paint, made them defend in space. You keep chopping, eventually the tree falls. I don't care how tall it is. That's the game."

The strategy worked. Despite Wembanyama finishing with 9 blocks (including 3 in the fourth quarter), the Jazz went to the free-throw line 16 times in the pivotal fourth quarter, sinking 12 of them. San Antonio scored 31 points in the fourth but couldn't overcome Utah's relentless attack. Three Spurs fouled out entirely, including Wembanyama himself.

Ace Bailey, who continued his stellar play with another strong 49 points performance, reflected on the adjustment.

"We were great early—couldn't miss," Bailey said. "But San Antonio made us uncomfortable with their defense in the second half. Coach saw what was happening and made the adjustment. Instead of forcing threes, we got downhill, attacked the rim, got to the line. That's the difference—being willing to change when what you're doing isn't working."

The series now shifts to the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, where the Jazz will attempt to use their home-court advantage to take a commanding 3-0 series lead.

Jumping out to a 2-0 series lead with both games on the road is incredible. Take even just 1 back in Utah and this series should be yours in 6.

Salt Lake City, UT. - Victor Wembanyama delivered a herculean performance to keep the San Antonio Spurs alive, exploding for 48 points and 13 rebounds to avoid the dreaded 3-0 series deficit with a 127-123 victory over the Utah Jazz.

Wembanyama had Bam Adebayo in a spin cycle all night, draining six three-pointers while dominating on both ends of the floor. Adebayo picked up several offensive foul calls and fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, leaving Robert Williams III with little answer for the MVP candidate. Wembanyama scored 12 of his 48 points in the final quarter alone.

Ace Bailey countered with a herculean effort of his own, posting 55 points in what was one of the most prolific individual performances of the series. But crucial misses down the stretch proved costly for Utah. Bailey was limited for much of the third quarter due to foul trouble, and the Jazz struggled to maintain offensive consistency in his absence.

San Antonio seized the opportunity, closing the third quarter on a devastating 16-4 run that transformed Utah's 11-point lead into a one-point deficit heading into the fourth.

The series remains in Utah for Game 4, with the Spurs looking to steal both games at the Delta Center and tie the series at two games apiece.

Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday night.

the bigger problem for Bam is that with Wemby on him defensively, he ain't doing shit :pgdead: even on the PNR, Wemby is so long it takes any entry pass away. most of his production comes with Wemby on the bench, or Bam at the 4.
