2027 Week Ten Preview
#5 Arizona State (8-0) @ Houston (3-6)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Week Ten Preview Image By: Emilio Suarez
Published: November 5th, 2027
The Sun Devils roll into Houston as one of the hottest teams in the country after a dramatic 42-34 victory over Texas A&M vaulted them to the fifth-overall ranking, but the Cougars lie in wait hoping to be the first team to hand Charlie Weis Jr. a loss.

The Cougars have struggled against winning teams this season, with their only wins coming against teams languishing under .500. Last week's loss was especially heartbreaking, surrendering a 14-point fourth-quarter lead in the 25-24 loss to the struggling Red Raiders. They'll look to finish the job this week at home.

Pitchfork Points

Image Don't get high on your own supply.

Arizona State now has a perfect 4-0 record against ranked teams this season. Houston is far from a ranked opponent, but the Sun Devils have to remain focused to avoid falling into the common trap for teams finding unprecedented success, overlooking a beatable opponent. Houston has enough talent on the other side to give ASU a run for their money. Here's to hoping Weis Jr. has the boys locked in with four games left.

Image How big is the loss of Martell Hughes?

Martell Hughes was an All-American last year at linebacker before moving to a hybrid safety role this year. While his numbers may appear to be down on paper, that's simply because his role has changed. Ask anyone in Tempe and they'll tell you, Hughes is the leader of this defense. Unfortunately for the defense, it was announced this week that Hughes would be ineligible for the next three games to an academic violation. The suspension is going to test the communication skills of the defense. If this had happened earlier in the year, I'd be worried. But now, the guys have some familiarity with each other and know their roles. It's worth monitoring though, especially if the game gets away from the Sun Devils defense early.

Image Keep finding the open man, Mack.

I know, I know. All season I've been pounding the table begging for someone else to step up. But I've finally turned the corner. Maybe what makes our offense great is that you can't key on any one guy. Sure, Kyson is going to get his looks. Same with Carlisle and RVB. But outside of that, it's not like you can look at one player and say he's getting the ball. And that may be our best weapon.

Sun Devils Stay Hot In Houston
#5 Arizona State (8-0) @ Houston (3-7) 13 | TDECU Stadium | Houston, TX.
By Emilio Suarez Image November 7th, 2027
Early in the first half of what would become a 42-13 blowout, it felt like the Houston Cougars had the resemblance of a chance. They took their opening drive inside the red zone behind 44 rushing yards by Re'Shaun Sanford II, but after two straight incompletions were forced to settle for the punt. It was the first of two long drives that ended in disappointing field goals for the hometown Cougars.

On the other side, the Sun Devils kept scoring touchdowns. Mason Mini hauled in a 20-yard snag before Austin Carlisle turned the corner on a jet sweep and left the Cougars in the dust 63 yards later. Then things got ugly.

Houston would fumble on the ensuing kickoff, which Rodney Bimage Jr. promptly deposited the gift into the end zone, and Arizona State would add a final Kyson Brown touchdown to take a 28-6 lead into the break.

Despite rumbling for 88 yards in the first half, Sanford II couldn't find the same groove in the second half, finishing with 102 yards before sitting for the entire fourth quarter. Trae Stacy made the most of his one quarter of extended action, slicing through the Sun Devils defense for a 73-yard score. But, with the deficit already sitting at 42-6 after two more Sun Devils' touchdowns earlier in the second half, it did little more than give the hometown fans something to talk about.

"Everyone wanted to talk trap game, but we've got the mindset of 1-0, every week," countered Charlie Weis Jr. when asked about avoiding the trap game in his post-game presser. "It's a tired mantra. But it's stuck around for so long because it works."

With the fourth-ranked LSU Tigers loss earlier in the evening to Texas A&M, the Sun Devils could very well earn their first top-3 ranking since the 1996 season.

:yep:

we lucked out not drawing Baylor, TTU, and OK State in the regular season. TCU and BYU tested us, as they should, but the rest are simply the bottom tier. Going to get into my Caesar bag and improve the conference randomly this offseason (already have increased XP sliders) to make sure it doesn't get too disproportionate

I think we'll still get punked by a big dawg in the playoffs. Our passing defense is suspect and our offense is still reliant on being faster than the other team, for the most part

2027 Week Eleven Preview
#3 Arizona State (9-0) @ Colorado (4-5)
The Devil's Due Mailbag — Week Eleven Preview Image By: Emilio Suarez
Published: November 12th, 2027
The story remains the same for the Arizona State Sun Devils as the 2027 campaign inches toward its finale: don't get caught. The Sun Devils enter Week 11 with their highest ranking since 1996, coming in as the third-ranked team in the nation. Colorado's season has gone off the rails, with some calling for Coach Prime's resignation, but still have the ability to humble the Sun Devils in Boulder.

If Arizona State comes in with the same intensity they did last week against Houston, they'll be fine. It's all about finishing the season on a roll and avoiding any more detrimental absences.

Pitchfork Points

Image Defense keeps taking hits.

Last week, Martell Hughes was suspended for three weeks. This week, JaBril Rawls hurt himself in practice, getting tangled up with Jerome Bettis Jr. on a jump ball, landing awkwardly on his shoulder before Bettis Jr. landed on top of him. The Sun Devils top cornerback will miss the remainder of the regular season with an AC Joint sprain, but he will be eligible to return by the conference championship game. Aside from some suspect run defense, the Sun Devils played well against the Cougs. They'll need to play even better to account for the absence of Rawls, easily the team's best coverage defender.

Image Can Jackson Brousseau surprise some people?

Jackson Brousseau has been a career backup for a reason. But suddenly he finds himself thrust into the limelight thanks to Isaac Wilson's broken tailbone. The injury to Wilson happened in the Buffaloes' 33-10 win over UCF before the bye week, and Brousseau has struggled since returning to the field. He'll need to play one of the best games of his career to stun the Sun Devils, while avoiding being baited into some ugly interceptions.

Image Stay healthy, ASU.

Don't worry about getting cute out there. Frying pan meets face, then hit the showers. We have the talent to make this a 35-0 game at the half and let the young'uns get some reps in the second half. We all know conference games hit different, so maybe Colorado will finally pull themselves off the mat. We'd prefer they stay down.
